I know we are doing it in the play offs but anyone notice a LOT more Nix coverage, in the press/stuff/etc recently?

It's a good thing and I'm thinking the new owners have had a lot to do with it.

Interesting to see the A-League getting good coverage now in the UK papers, at least in the Guardian, who have something nearly every day.

Joe Gorman who writes their A-League material is good value.

Often their coverage of the A-League as a whole is better than the NZ papers...

Excellent series of new season A-League previews for each club coming out one-a-day on the Guardian website:

Sad to read of Kiwi football broadcasting legend Alan Richards passing away aged 91

Did the commentaries for the All Whites matches on the road to Spain 1981-82.

Did TV and radio commentaries for All Whites and other games from 1950's to late 1980's

(and a claim to world fame as the commentator on the first overseas sports broadcast out of China in 1974 for the All Whites v China)

Also a staunch North Shore United club man.

As well as a leading cricket commentator for decades.

Not sure where to put this but the Nix expanded colour pull-out in todays's StarTimes was I thought pretty brill. All the guys in their strip one side, and suited-up on the reverse. And portrayed as individs, not as squad dummies lined up kneeling/standing, facing the camera. Nice one.

How come no comments?

After reading your post I just spent an hour  walking around my Christchurch suburb between about 6 pm and 7 pm until I found the one dairy that still had copies of yesterday's Star-Times.

Agree  - the player portraits are good.

Now I'll have to debate which side of the poster to put on my lounge wall to remind me of when all the games are on.

At this stage i'm leaning towards the action shots in playing strip.

Time to take down my World Cup wall chart from July and replace it with this..

One grumble though - as an anorak I'd prefer the fixture list had space to write in the scores as last year's magazine supplement did.

It also had enough space to cross out the inevitable fixture changes during the season and write in the new dates.

Also, although I know about all the players, I think for the ignorant general public it would have been good to have player biographies and a few little articles like last year's supplement.

If I'd put it together, I'd also have used three more dynamic attacking players as the main figures in the middle of the action shots rather than focusing on Moss, Durante and Sigmund, three defensive players and the least mobile players in the side.

Cheers Jerzy, picked one up from Mojo this morning.

Think the playing strip side is the best, great to see a team photo done different. Some hilarity on twitter about the Nike logos on the boots being photoshopped out!

I can't even comment on the lead football stories at www.stuff.co.nz! FFS. How do they know how much interest there is if there is no way for the football fans to engage with their site???

One news has a long story about the Breakers fitness woes for a game that's at the end of this week, before a 10second round up of the Nix game that was so halfarsed that it didn't even show all 3 goals. Sigh

Look if the Phoenix win there will be positive media. When they play awful and lose and only 7000 people show up, do you really expect a glowing assessment?

Yeah he played into their hands I agree.

There is actually no evidence that the Nix are on the rocks though.

The licence issue is being horribly misreported. The Aussie clubs got a "20 year licence" but it's terminable by notice, so it's hardly any guarantee. We didn't get one because we require the AFC's sign off which expires and needs renewing.

Yeah, I'm no comms guru but trying to get people to buy into your brand by constantly talking about how it's potentially doomed doesn't seem like the best public relations strategy

Is the stuff:

(a) trying to exacerbate the problem so they have a sensation to report on?

(b) trying to scare people out of their inertia by painting the picture that if you don't get along the team will fold?

(c) really just reporting a dire situation as it is?

All three make me want to vomit.

This article is like a Gareth Morgan 2.0 commentary redux.

The club is doomed, you must get along or we'll pull it, you guys are pathetic. I doubt you would ever see Richard Clarke (Breakers) Tew (RFU) Scurrah (Warriors) slam/threaten their fans in that manner. Build your base, win friends and influence people, charm offensive, not stand over with a big stick.

I don't know the guy and it seems he is everyones mate, but is this guy the right man for the gig?

edit: I also accept that I could be a complete muggins and fallen foul for muppet reporting and Dome has not said a lot of those things.

Here are all the quotes

"It's not a threat, it's a stark reality. If we're getting 7500 people in Wellington it just doesn't make sense to us and the FFA won't put up with it and they will say it's not good for our numbers to have the Phoenix dragging us down,"

"There is certainly a desire to get a result ASAP."

"They see our ownership group as a very solid, quality ownership group with a strong governance model behind the club. Having said that, the metrics aren't so good on the other ones, and that includes [TV] viewership and people turning up to the games,"

"Long term we need to be in Auckland, there's no doubt about it. If we're doing really well and we're top four then who knows what we could get at Eden Park, we could get 25,000. That's very good for the club, it gets our numbers up and the FFA love it. It just makes sense.”

"We just have to be realistic. If the trade off is you have a professional football club in Wellington and play three games a year in Auckland; or no football club, what would you rather have?"

Are they really bad? Last quote probably isn't the greatest.

But all the rest say is that

  • the Phoenix need to go to Auckland each year (think most people agree there)
  • FFA might get concerned if numbers stay around there.

If we win, they will come. End of. I think every single fan knows that.

Not sure why Welnix can't see that (and they probably can, but MARQUEE may help this along)

(d) none of the above.

Negative headlines get more clicks. That is all.

It's just a sad commentary on where print media has got to in this country. CTR is king. All other considerations (your readers, journalism, etc) second.

Yet the Breakers get more news time after their abysmal season, this logic doesn't stack up.

Can't guarantee results, have to be something else that is enough to draw in the extras. Results should be the icing on the cake.

But why does he even need to get into this stuff? Its two days after the start of the season and already we're talking about negative off field stuff other than the football. There is no story here bit he makes in by saying the FFa aren't happy, can't sustain crowds yaddah yaddah yaddah.
