Israel have played outside Asia for political reasons for quite a while. Mostly in Europe, but there were a couple of campaigns with Oceania in the late 80s as well. (I remember the 1988 Olympic  and 1990 WC qualifying in particular).

I'd imagine that Chinese-Taipei (aka Taiwan) were put in Oceania to avoid politically awkward mtach-ups with China. God knows what would have happened if they'd actually progressed in the 1982 WC qualifying. I also remember them featuring in the 88 Olympic qualifying matches at Athletic Park, and going to watch them play the All Whites in the early 90's at the Hutt Rec.

We played Israel twice in both 1985 & 1989 as well.  The 3-1 win against them in October 1985 was a superb performance.

Was just about to jump all over this, then I realised it was Robb, and got the joke.

Anyway, just wanted to point out that Israel played in Europe for the Espana '82 qualifiers.

Closest thread I can find for OFC Football thread. This seems like a good result for Fiji?

Is a great result. Fiji FA has an interesting program ongoing looking forward to qualify for 2022 WC. They have invested the money they've raised by qualifying to the 2015 U-20 WC and 2016 Olympics way better than Tahiti had when they played 2009 U-20 WC and 2013 Confeds

RIP Commins Menapi 1977-2017

Sadly passed away in Honiara overnight.

Played for Sydney United in the NSL before representing my beloved Youngheart Manawatu and then Waitakere United in the NZFC.

Famously scored the 2 goals against Australia in the 2004 Oceania Nations Cup that ended our own WCQ campaign and consigned the All Whites to third place.

Great loss to the Solomon Islands. RIP and condolences to his family.

CHAMPION footballer Bong Kalo is back in the country after three months with FC Ascona in Switzerland.

Kalo has spent the last three months with FC Ascona to build him up mentally and physically to become a professional footballer.

Football experts said the past three months have not been enough and he needs another three months which will be starting in February 2018 to go and build him up technically and tactically.

Great for the region but from all accounts that is a second or even third-string Estonia side that's been touring the Islands..

Full first round results from Pacific games

Fiji 8 - 0 Tuvalu

Solomon Islands 8 - 0 Tonga

Vanuatu 2 - 1 New Caledonia

Today's result from Tuvalu v New Caledonia?

Tuvalu 2 - 1 New Caledonia

Inexperienced and youthful team selection for New Caledonia, but nonetheless an incredible result for Tuvalu. Great stuff!

Wow. That's an inmense result for Tuvalu. Isn't it weird that the Pacific Games are played by U23 teams but the Mini Games have actual senior sides contesting?

Today's results

Vanuatu 5 - 0 Tonga

Solomon Islands 0 - 0 Fiji

Unfortunately there isn't too much coverage of these matches, apart from match reports coming out a day or so after on the Oceania Football website.

Here's what I've got so far

Big wins for Fiji & Solomon Islands, Vanuatu scrape past New Caledonia

Tuvalu stun New Caledonia

24 nations/territories competing at the games in Vanuatu over several different sports.

I wonder whether NZF has ever been invited or even has an interest in sending a side over in future Pacific Games tournaments?

NZ based players only, or could possibly look at what New Caledonia have done this time around and effectively send in and U-21/U-23 side. Would be great to test the depth against some improving Oceania nations. Just a thought...

Results from the past few days

New Caledonia 4 - 2 Tonga

Vanuatu 1 - 1 Fiji

Solomon Islands 6 - 0 Tuvalu

Proving hard to find information on New Caledonia v Tonga match. Can't find anything from local news sources and Tongan sports news is still coming to terms with losing to England in the League World Cup.

Looks like it's just a round robin tournament so hosts Vanuatu take out the Gold!

Honorable mention to Tuvalu for grabbing a couple of wins during the tournament as well.

Definitely great tournament for Tuvalu - a team that had never won a game, ending up winning two.

One against an under-strength youth New Caledonia team and one against what should have been a stronger team, Tonga.

Would love to know more about the team, e.g. if they brought in someone new/are looking further afield for eligible players etc, but it looks like there is very little about them online.

Tuvalu has won several matches before. From memory Kiribati (after pens) and Tonga in 1979 and American Samoa in 2011. I'm probably missing a couple more. If they could enter the OFC they would be competitive at least within the less developed countries (Am Samoa, Cook Islands, Samoa and Tonga)

One of the only things getting me excited for the expanded 2026 world cup (I’m not a fan) is that Oceania get 1.5 places. The second placed team has a playoff much like we do right now, except if they win that playoff they’ll go through to another playoff against a seeded team with a high FIFA ranking that hasn’t qualified already. So we could easily end up seeing Messi turn up at the Lawson Tama, i’m hyped!

Good read on football development in Tuvalu > Here

From reading through that, they definitely want to get more exposure on the international stage.

Had a look on eloratings and they're above - Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands & American Samoa, or in other words, the teams that make up the preliminary round of the Oceania WCQ/Nations Cup. I know there's more to look at than that, but for a country of 10,000(ish) they sound like they are putting in a concerted effort behind the scenes by joining the Confederation of Independent Football Associations (CONIFA), and hopefully in future - The OFC and FIFA.

Good luck to them.

That list is missing the matches from the consolation tournament in 1979. There they drew with Kiribati 3-3 and then beat them in penalties

All of this reminds me how sharky it was from OFC to make the Pacific Games an U23 tournament just to save money. Tuvalu, Micronesia, Wallis and Futuna and Kiribati only had a chance to play full internationals there. And now they can't so instead they send a bunch of kids who get beaten 48-0. Except maybe Micronesia, all of these countries were able to get decent results several times and they already should be FIFA members by now
