Guess we can’t be too mad with that. Some very promising signs at the beginning and I think Payne and Howieson have earnt themselves regular callups. Done well against a team who called up and played all of their stars

You have a free kick with only a minute left and instead of just try to centre they play it quickly and lose the ball

Watched full 90 online. Yes the wind played a part but standard of football wasn't great.

Boxall did well at the back, NZ full backs were poor though. Second half subs took too long to get into the game and Canada's majority share of the possession second half saw them win the game.

Canada's Liam Miller was class on the left, watch out for him developing at Liverpool in the coming years.

Overall I hope the new coach got to know some of the new players and fingers crossed we get another game announced for May/ June

Wind ruined it as a spectacle somewhat. Way way too early to even say how Schmid is going to set things up long term, compared to Hudson. This was a closed door friendly with no pressure at all.

Really a bit of meaningless game, apart from introducing youngsters to AWs environment. Hopefully one of the amateur Handy players, caught the eye of a pro club somewhere. Thought Payne was the best of those guys. Ingham was disappointing.

Hopefully Schmid is brave enough to continue picking the youngsters for the next 12-18 mths, and so give them a chance to see if they can shine at this level. He needs to build depth before the OFC Nations Cup 2020, when no doubt a few first team regulars will be unavailable. Results in the next 12-18 mths mean nothing, so he might as well experiment now.

I'm sure Collier will come in for the next game. Hopefully NZF can source a pre world friendly or two in Europe in May/June - though of course these matters are never easy, and AWs just not attractive as an opponent. Sadly it won't be the Socceroos. I see they have already locked in pre WC friendlies verus Czech Republic & Hungary

It finishes 1-0 to Canada in Pintar thanks to a Tosaint Ricketts goal in the 54th minute.

It was a pretty poor performance in the second half from the boys. The subs were pretty flat especially Bevan, Singh and De Jong. Canada's goal was good with a great through ball forward to Ricketts good enough for him to volley home past Crocombe. And they almost got a second when Miller tried to get something on the ball in front of an open goal. We didnt keep the ball well in that half which was very disapointing.

Out of the new callups i would say Payne and Howieson definitely deserve a starting spot. And Rufer, Brotherton and Crocombe should get another look at.

As for Canada former Ferns coach John Herdman starts off his tenure with the Mens national team with a win. You could tell throughout the the match that he really took a hold of the side and motivated them towards the win. As for Fritz i know this is only very early days but i cant understand what sort of football he wants the team to play. He probably just let everyone show him what they had in their game as it was a pretty meaningless friendly. But nevertheless we need to continue to add depth to the team for when things start getting serious in 2020. It was a shame we didnt get to see Niko Boxall and Niko Kirwan on the pitch. And would've liked to have seen Woud or Tzanev get 20 or 30 minutes under their belt but in all fairness i think Crocombe played bloody well. So now we wait for months desperately waiting for another international. I would like us to be apart of the World Cup Warm ups like we were against Japan in 2014 as thats were a lot of the new established players in the squad now got give their chance. But what teams are we gonna warm up because i cant think of any World Cup team that plays anywhere near our level of football unless Peru, Denmark or France give us a n extremely remote chance of a game. Should be an intresting year with Fritz also beginning to look at U-23 players for the Olympic qualifiers and hopefully the Tournament  in 2020. Cant wait :((

Payne and Howieson should have been in the Phoenix squad this season in my opinion - based on what I've seen of them in the ISPS Handa Premiership. Howieson was one of Auckland City's outstanding players in the Club World Cup last December. The Nix's scouting of local players has been very poor.

Glad I didn't wake up at 4 am this morning to watch the AW's because the whole game is on You Tube on Canada Soccer's channel. Team line-ups are about 14 minutes in:

Good question.

If I were to speculate, I would think not and don’t recall anyone mentioning it here. The Phoenix were on an anti kiwi recruitment thing (paraphrase) because of no international windows. Once that’s officially sorted, they would be players I would trial

Just wondering about Storm Roux. He was named in the squad, then Gulley was called in and NZF didn't name who he was replacing. Then Storm Roux ends up playing for CCM last night and missing the All Whites game.

Does anyone know what happened here?

Payne, Howieson, de Jong, Gulley and many others would all be quite comfortable in the A-League

fair point but when they came back I don't think either were on the all whites radar. What would have been the harm to have a look to see if they were in fact better then the Rufers and Ridenton's or Ausi cast offs?

If they flew at the Nix, were selected then you sort that issue out then - it's actually a good problem to have

I hope whatever happens with the windows that we reverse the policy that has been in place, it's the only competitive advantage we have over the Ausis and we need to use it.

He didn't travel because of 'personal reasons'. What does that mean I don't know

Why don’t the Nix and NZF have a chat. Nix agree to try sign more Kiwis (ideally from Handy Prem) - which is only good news for NZ football.

In return for the next 2 years, Schmid agrees to pick only say a max 3 Nix players for the AWs if said AWs game(s) is during the A League season.

Any AWs game in the next 2 years pre 2020 OFC Nations Cup is just a friendly, and so like today doesn’t have to be a full strength team. A time to experiment.

Of course this may require NZF and the Nix to behave as adults, and put any petty differences aside for betterment of NZ football - so probably too much to ask.

Was intresting to hear that Fritz was very happy with the 'fringe players' during the time he had with them in Spain. Rumours are he wants another look at a lot of them which is totally understandable. But even more intrestingly was that Stuff suggested that these fringe players might be ahead in the national team pecking order of the likes of Wynne, Tuiloma,Colvey and Gleeson. Even though Schimd understands that these players are trying to cement their positions in their MLS sides. He admires Micheal Boxalls desire to play for the national team despite his MLS duties.

Great post and they have actually done this before I believe? Struggling to name the game but I know it has happened

That’s a liberal application of “quite comfortable” but if people think Ridenton is good then those players will look like rockstars

Yeah if I have to look subjectively I only see the first two as potential difference makers

Thought reports on Howieson were not standing out in Handa Prem like the Seamonster obviously did. Payne is better than Ridenton or what?

CCM had a quiet world in his ear?  Maybe they blocked him previously which led to so little game time under Hudson.
