If Indian FA are paying, it doesn’t matter does it?

Not sure if anyone really cares but India got underway with a thumping 5-0 win over Chinese Taipei. Might be that Chinese Taipei will be the whipping boys of the tournament. Sunhil Chhetri got a hatrick, adding to his 56 goals and 97 apperances. Might make his 100th if India make the final. Udanta Singh and  Pronay Helder got the other goals.

Out of interest see that Peru beat Saudi Arabia 3-0 (Paolo Guerrero 2 goals) in a warm game in Europe.

Saudi of course qualified ahead of Australia in Asia WC qualifying. No idea how strong the Saudi team was for this game (you would think would play a strongest team as final WC dress rehearsal), and of course dangerous to draw comparisons on only one game.

But maybe AWs did pretty well in playoffs against Peru, and just if consistently had a full strength team available we would go close with an Asian qualifying route. Of course all moot when WC expanded to 48 teams.

I'd agrue that with emergence of likes of Singh & Collier (plus further development of Tuiloma & Wynne) - a 2018 full strength AWs would be better than a 2017 version.

I'd be very hesitant in attaching great deal of significance to pre-World Cup friendly results, for a whole range of reasons (even though it's pretty clear that Peru > Saudi Arabia).

AFC though definitely gives us the best play-off chance,.

I must've missed it, but was Guerreo's ban overturned? Great news for them if so.

Peru are currently on a 14 game unbeaten run (and are the unofficial ‘world champions’) while  Saudi have suffered a few hammering in recent friendlies this year (1-4 vs Iraq, 0-4 vs Belgium etc). I feel that Saudi might get a bit of a hammering at the World Cup.

Saudi qualified when an out of form Australia struggled to hit the mark in the final hurdle.

If Saudi finished 3rd in their table, I would've picked them to beat Syria in the playoff, but then lose to Honduras in the intercontinental playoff.

I still think it would've been incredible to see Australia play USA in the in the intercontinental playoff.

I think part of problem that Socceroos face with Asian qualifying is it's a huge confederation with some big distances to cover, and assembling a squad from all over the world. Basically same problem that AWs face, which would be even more highlighted if travelling all over Asia, rather than just the Islands which are a few hours flight from NZ.

A side like Saudi Arabia on other hand, is pretty much a team of domestic players from the Saudi league, or other nearby leagues in Middle East. So travel demands not as great, and get to spend longer together as a team.

In a one off game at full strength I'd pick the AWs verus Saudis to be very tight. But the AWs playing a long Asian qualifying series over 1-2 years may struggle with travel demands, and constant unavailability of senior players.

Anyway it's all a bit irrelevant as will never happen, especially with WC to be expanded to 48 teams, and we get our soft entry, with clayton's two games at the big dance.

Hopefully FIFA's proposed Nations League gets approved - so giving AWs some meaningful quality games both home & away.

What's the table sort-order rule / determination of qualifiers for final; if teams are level on points at end of group stage?
eg is it goal difference, or result(s) between the teams on equal points?
