I see Scott Styris, who is currently in the UK, is saying that the World Cup is great and he is glad that he is watching it in the UK because NZ  does not care about it.

What a Clown! Sounds like a another broken down Rugby Head. The FIFA World Cup holds the record  for any sport event turnover on the NZ TAB. Not bad for an event that no one cares about.

I imagine the quote context hasn't been taken into account. I imagine he isn't saying all NZers don't care about it but go outside your football friends and you are unlikely to see much more talk about it. Sure there is more news paper articles but nothing you wouldn't expect. In England, they will be going crazy about it, most people will be talking about it, places will be decked out for it etc. So I'm sure he means it is more fun being in a country that has a team in the competition than it would be to watch from NZ.

Also, Scott Styris played cricket not rugby.

There's also the time zone. Makes it more difficult to set up for the evening down at the local with mates and watch a couple of games.

he's generally right though, the media coverage here isn't great I was listening to the radio yesterday and they were going on about the red card in the rugby for about 20 minutes and then spent 10 minutes on the 3 games at the world cup the night before

If you look at the event based on media coverage, you'd think that there wasn't that much interest here (despite the fact there is)

Don't know who Scott Styris is but he has got a point. The build up to and coverage of the WC here in NZ has been pretty tame bordering on non existent when compared to other nations where football is played.

I listen to Trackside Radio Sport where  The TAB (who own the station) have been pushing the World Cup to generate betting. Riccardo Ball who is a big football fan and Miles Davis have been promoting on the station's sports show.

The World Cup has been one of the lead stories on TV 3 News with plenty of coverage on Stuff and MSN. I went into Bethel Woods this morning for the England game, the atmosphere was great.

Yeah so sure we are seeing more of it and Scott is wrong that "NZ does not care about it", but us having the bit more coverage will be nothing to what is happening over in England at the moment. Instead of worrying about NZ footballs place in the New Zealand sporting landscape, lets just enjoy this increased coverage of the sport while we have it at the moment.

All I can find FTA is one live game a day on Prime and a highlights package later in the day (at a pretty useless time to be able to watch).

Am I missing something?

90 minutes a day free to air isn't much to shout about: we're missing out on some cracker games

Maybe sky think we should be grateful for the crumbs they throw our way

He is not always correct when he comments on cricket but he is 100 per cent correct on this as anyone here should confirm if they have been in the U.K during a tournament,

Nothing beats them standing on tables and singing britianna rules the waves.

Styris played football at Hamilton Boys High and was by all accounts a very decent player (the 1st 15 tried to even get him to swap codes).

NZ media is still way behind the general public in terms of support for Football and the coverage it gets. I listen to the ROCK every morning and it pisses me off regualry during the sports news where it seems to be completely ignorant of anything football related... still the best station in NZ though.

Yeah but it's pretty much the same for every sport that isn't Rugby, league or Cricket. The sports media is very old school in this country and even the 'new school' guys seem more interested in American sports than ones which are dominated by Europe such as football or tennis.
