I thought Rudes discontinued the practice of dropping first team players to the reserves? Or did I just imagine that?

16 yr old Solomons star #10 Raphael Le'ai joins the Phoenix academy.

Looks an outstanding talent but bizarrely, he can't play a competitive game for two years.

Not bizarrely at all. Same rule kept Harris out of competitive games and stops many players going to Europe before 18.

FIFA's attempt at stopping child exploitation. Too many kids have been picked out of villages by European clubs, trialed for days/weeks/months and then turfed out on the streets of Paris* with nary a penny.

The LOTG seem pretty clear:

1. International transfers of players are only permitted if the player is over the age of 18.

2. The following three exceptions to this rule apply:

a) The player's parents move to the country in which the new club is located for reasons not linked to football....(unlikely applicable in this instance ?)

b) The transfer takes place within the territory of the European Union (EU) etc .........(not applicable in this instance)

c) The player lives no further than 50km from a national border and the club with which the player wishes to be registered in the neighbouring association is also within 50km of that border etc.....(not applicable in this instance).

I reckon that in order to circumvent the above Law, the Nix don't  "register" the (minor from overseas) player(s)  therefore no official "transfer" has taken place & hence they cant play those un-registered players in competitive games .

(If they did "register/transfer" the players (including Harris when he moved to NZ?) it would seem likely they are in breach of the above LOTG?)

Hmm - a 16 year old can leave home and go to war, but not follow his dream of being a pro football player?

I think FIFA's intentions are good but this law is overbearing, and Harris and Le'ai are two examples where it's made life worse for the players and for football. They're thwarting kids who are trying to get a good education and what they and their families might see as a better life, and develop their football skills.

A cut-off at 16 might be OK, or no law at all - just butt out and leave people to decide what's best for themselves.

re: sheesh - A chocolate fish says Le'ai gets a pro contract one day. Javin Wae and a few others in that team looked pretty impressive too, and yes it does seem bizarre that the reason they may never reach their potential is FIFA.

At 16 there's not many people who know what's best for their future, especially talented footballers being hounded by agents, clubs and any others in football who have zero moral compass. If said 16 yo turns out to be not so good, a year later, they're on their own with no tools on how to deal with it. The law is necessary

The rule has good intentions for the end result. But it also means players from countries with lower quality development pathways and resources are held back even further in their player development compared to those born in countries with better development pathways.

They could have made rules better for both sides rather than putting a blanket ban but I guess its easier to enforce a one size fits all rule, until then inequality in football will always remain.

Yeah, they are just squatting on the license.

Since these posts were made, Weenix have played 6 games and earned 11 points - just under 2 points a game.

That form across the season would have put them on the tail of 4th.

According to the NZF website the Weenix have played 8 games since 12 Jan (excluding the 0-4 loss to Easts on the 12th) to collect those 11 points.

This season they lost 13 of 18, scored just 22 goals and conceded 46.

The results in their last two games, both at home against teams with nothing to play for, skews what up until then what can only be described an abysmal season.

at the same time they've had Callan Elliott, Gianni Stesness and Ben Waine all promoted to the first team with two of those getting game time in the A-League, so it can be argued it has been a successful season for them as they are about development and not results

I'm interested in what makes you think their opposition had "nothing to play for"... as in, enough to suggest that's why they lost, in particular HBU who genuinely seemed upset at losing to a bunch of kids to the point they had three people sent off.

#OpportunityDoesNotMeanDevelopment... but to develop you need to have the opportunities??

I think the WeeNix need to improve as a competitive unit, but am happy to have seen young players come through over the last 18months.

I'm also a big fan of us going over to Aussie and snapping up young talent that are eligible for both countries and trying to tie them to NZ and connect them to us. The two examples from this year both being a success in that regards.

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realise you needed the concept of "nothing to play for" to be explained to you.

It's when a team is comfortably mid-table at the end of the season. A win won't see them go up and a loss won't see them go drop places. Add in Hawkes Bay's leading scorer had already left, as had other players doing the season, then you maybe understand the game was meaningless for them.

But, whatever.

that just means they are restricted on how many first teamers they can drop

you could argue that by the end of most seasons when they end up playing alot more youth they are unduly influencing the comp

they always seem to have the full set of pros wen they play TW or ACFC, not so much against Tasman or Southern

As opposed to the Weenix, where a win wasn't going to see them go up a place, a loss wasn't going to see them go down a place (and in fact both those parameters existed for several games) and their leading goal scorer had already left as had other players during the season. Oh, that sounds eerily familiar.

So yes, go on, explain it again because it just sounds like excuses to me.

While you are at it, explain how when teams apparently have 'nothing to play for' but one of those teams gets consistently better results, that team is not seen as improving.

Perception. Last time out against TW was: Jones, Mogg, Curry, Wynne, Smith, Sutton, Stensness, Elliot, Ebbinge, Kumsuz and Waine, none of which had an a-league minute to their name at the time.

That said, the 'more youth' playing second half of the season picked up more results than any lineup before Christmas, so while you could argue they are influencing the comp, I'm not convinced it's 'unduly' as developing footballers is the whole rationale isn't it?

How bad was the injury, any update? Hopefully he's only taken a knock and will recover in time for Brisbane next week.

Good to see he's amongst the goals though.

Wonder if Talay will be ringing Hay in Lithuania, demanding McCowatt is rested.

With possibly Hooper and maybe Waine out for the Roar, Uffie will be getting a little anguish.
