Some interesting match-ups in the next round as the battle for the placings 3rd to 6th has closed up after Saturday's round.

Suburbs take on FC Twenty11 in Nelson with Coastal looking for the 3 points over Bays, Nomads facing Technical and Western out to maintin their winning record at home when they take on Selwyn.

If Bays win they will move into the top five with either Coastal or Nomads droppinging back to 6th place.

Nomads and Technical also due to meet on Tuesday evening in the English Cup

Are Coastal really in danger of having to play the CCL teams at the end of season? ?

Unlikely but would not want to drop too many points from their last three games against Bays (H), Selwyn (A) and FC (H), so it is their own control. Still have a few players not 100% fitness wise and would not want to continue on current form which has seen them record a two win - four loss record from their last six MPL games.

Nomads run in is Tech, Bays, Selwyn and FC - all at Tulett Park and yet to drop a point there this season.

Western have Selwyn and FC at home before Suburbs and Technical away.Bays have Coastal (A), Nomads (A), Tech (A) and Selwyn (H)

Bays run in is Coastal (A), Nomads (A), Tech (A) and Selwyn (H).

Selwyn finish with Western (A), Coastal (H), Nomads (A), Bays (A) and the catch-up game against Suburbs at Foster Park.

So still plenty of points on offer and still in control of all the teams able to finish in the top five if they can string together a undefeated run in coming weeks.

Note the finishing order may not be as above as the dates for the catch-up games still to confirmed.

How did the table end up last year after 2 mpl rounds Gavin? What’s the magic points total needed for a southern league place?

Here is 2018 table, too many permulations at the moment to work out this season but 22 points should be enough again.

Cashmere Technical 14 11 3 0 52 17 35 36
Coastal Spirit 14 10 1 3 35 10 25 31

So Selwyn who were “going backwards” have 5 games still to play and are already 4 points better off.

I don’t think anyone would want to play Tech 3 times in 6 days to be fair.

They stop games on turf because its raining now? Or, it's so bad it's flooded?

So after todays results.

Cashmere Technical are in touching distance of what would be a record sixth title, Suburbs need to win against Selwyn in their catch-up game on Monday or the title will be Tech's.

At the moment only Technical and Nelson Suburbs are the only sides confirmed for the Southern Football League.

A real log jam now for teams currently in 3rd to 7th place with just 3 points covering the six sides so any of Coastal, Western, Nomads, Bays and Selwyn can still finish in the top five so plenty to play for in the next few weeks

FC Twenty11 can only finish at the bottom of the table at the end of the 14 rounds of the MPL.

Great day coming up for some football, MPL and then Kate Sheppard and Chatham Cup ties follow.

Catch-up game between Selwyn and Nelson Suburbs at 11am out at Foster Park, Suburbs third game in 5 days so will fatigue / injuries be an issue,

If Suburbs win then likely title decider next Saturday against Cashmere Tech at Garrick Memorial Park

A game draw will mean title will be Tech's, with Selwyn up to 6th.

A win for the Stallions will see them join Coastal and Western on 16 points and move up to a least fifth on the table.

Dont what result pisses me off more. Losing to an average Selwyn team or losing to the Chch united Mercenaries. Can you believe a referee got an assist against us? Literally. I mean cmon

Ummm.... the ball was kicked into the ref, with the Utd player then putting it top corner from 30 yards. I wouldn't call that an assist. I thought the ref did a good job today; heaps of yellow cards as he was busy.

Interesting fact that a grand total of 0 players in today's starting 11 for Chch Utd played for them last year. 1 may have come off the bench late in the second half.
