Not much coming out, why don’t the teams say something.

I guess there's a lack of volunteers to look after social media? Some teams do ok (Uni, Cavvy), Mosgiel getting more regular at posting (on Facebook, meh), but still well behind what you see some clubs further north doing. Effort vs reward though I guess

I don't understand why clubs don't take some money out of the budget they pay the coach and put it towards running a proper social media site - players pictures, lineups etc. - it's not that hard, means a lot to the players and sets a professional standard. A great example is Dunedin Tech, they had a great set up last year (even with match programmes), but since the men's side has fallen apart nobody seems to care. Similar with Roslyn and Green Island, they only post when they're winning - which is not great for observers of the league that cannot be at the games.

So you're putting your hand up to do it?

Would love to - but i'm not affiliated with any clubs, just an observer (the clue is in the name). I'm just making the point that if facebook pages like Western's in chch could be followed it would be great for the overall exposure of the league down here. There are plenty of passionate fans down here, and club rivalry is very strong (I would argue too strong to be honest) - so why can't someone from each club dedicate a few hours to doing this and be compensated for it as well? Seems a better use of money than paying huge sums to the coaches (and players at some clubs too).

Most ppl spend hours on facebook etc every day sure there is someone within each club had to do something positive and consistent? Varsity seem to be the most innovative but its still a long way behind what could be done.

Have heard along a grapevine that apparently the Wellington Phoenix are taking a few local players on trial in preparation for the new season, and they're putting a bit of interest into Southern United's very own Garbhan Coughlan. Anyone else heard about this?

why not do it then?, find a club get involved, no club is going to come and ask you - once you are involved you'll probably start to realise just how much time it takes and as for getting compensated - that would be wonderful - but back in the real word it's probably unlikely to happen and you'll find yourself doing alot more than just social media

Was more of a throwaway comment saying i'd love to - the point was more that more noise should be made in encouraging teams to do things. I have just about enough capability to use YellowFever and scroll Facebook, but my skills run out pretty soon after that.

I understand what you're saying, but it shouldn't be too difficult to organise some form of renumeration - social media presence has a massive effect on how prospective players see teams, and I can't believe it's still such an under-utilised platform. I feel the same about match highlights/full game streams. All games around both Mainland and Southern have cameras recording, but it only seems to be for the teams purpose. Why not stream and let people watch from wherever they want? (I caveat this comment with the confession that once again, I would have no idea how to do this myself - but I still think it's a valid question)

Yes people should be paid for doing that stuff, but it rarely happens. Lots of reasons for that. Dont get me started.

It does take a bit extra to live stream and edit footage for highlights. If you've got an enthusiastic amateur/pro who has the gear and is doing it for fun then that's great. But they are rare.

And if you've got an amateur then most likely what the club will get won't be great, but the content exists and some people are happy enough with that.

Quality costs.

Curious neutral: Excuse me club, why don't you get some tech minded, social media savvy, trust worthy person with some spare time to do Social Media for your club and live stream games and pay with them with some spare cash?

Club: We decided to me more realistic and asked Santa for someone to come along and help clean up after club functions and at the end of the year; and if we had been particularly good for some large benefactor to come along and alleviate the cash flow struggles. Unfortunately all we got were a load of mini-balls and some drink bottles for the Juniors from Maccas via NZ Football. Sigh...

Feel free to pitch in, we'd love a hand!!!

While I agree that social media has its place as an easy means to get information out but surely streaming games could mean supporters will not come and watch games live so in the long run will this be good for the games, clubs etc.

Plenty of negative views on this point it seems, but i'm happy to be part of the minority. Pretty much all clubs film their games anyway, and most clubs have social media pages, so what's the issue? The foundations seem to be there. And don't give me that rubbish about having no money, everyone knows premier men's coaches are paid for their time, and some clubs pay players too. Exposure is good for the whole club, excessive payments to players/coaches are only good for that individual.

This was just an idea floated out there, as i'm sure many have done before. I start to think it is no surprise that nobody has tried to solve this issue or at the very least get creative, as almost everyone who has replied to me has just put it in the 'too hard' basket.

Plenty of people have tried to do this. You're right in saying you aren't the first to have the idea. Its in the "too hard" basket for good reason at this point, clubs have limited funds and, as you say, they spend them in other areas. The ROI on streaming for most local clubs is not going to be good, the money is far better spent elsewhere.

I think it offers opportunities for former players/fans/families of players etc. in different parts of NZ/the world to watch, and I think that is a positive. I also think that it will allow coaches to better tailor training sessions in anticipation of playing certain teams. This 1) improves coaches abilities to process different styles of football and come up with ways to prepare for certain games; and 2) lets players reflect on their individual performances, which will let them take responsibility for their performances going forward.

On the whole, I think this will raise the standard of quality of football - it's not just skill based, it's tactical and mental endurance, and this makes it more professional. If a few choose to stay at home, then so be it - but nothing beats a live game of football on a saturday afternoon!

Okay, well don't stream. But upload the game footage (which will be filmed) onto social media for people to watch post game. That isn't too difficult, is it?

IMO the best is highlights uploaded with an option to watch the whole match. Nice little 10-20 second clips of goals, saves, misses and written commentary on them

Floating an idea is all well and good but it’s as useful as talent without application.

One of the toughest challenges clubs face is finding enough volunteers to give up their tine, there are far more good ideas floated than there are people willing to get off their arse and put it into practice. The other one is not enough money.

The closest thing to  negativity I see is you having a pop at clubs and I feel the people who give up their time deserve to be defended. Paying coaches/players in some cases maybe valid and whilst i personally don’t believe players should be paid at this level, it is the choice of those that are give up their time and  raise the money. I’d also be very surprised if every coach in Dunedin got paid.

It's not so much expecting to get paid, I just think at any given time there will be a couple of coaches around the league who do it for the love. Especially if they've been at a club for a while or have an understanding of what club finances are like. I am only guessing and could well be wrong.

I'd stress that I would expect the majority would be getting something.

I also think that having a the best coaching staff you can get is a major priority for any club, and if you can afford it, it is money well spent.

Happy to simplify.

I think that, in general there will probably be one or two coaches in the Southern League who are prepared to coach for free.

As for who would be coaching for free at the moment, I don’t have an intimate knowledge of coaching payments throughout the league, so any guess would be based on rumours.

in all honesty WOW, I would be very surprised if there was any coach that was working for nothing!

It's a do or die clash for both sides, so Mosgiel can't really sit back like they did in the first game. Varsity's own worst enemy is themselves, so I think if they keep their transition mistakes to a minimum, Mosgiel will struggle to get involved in the game. I don't know if Cody Brook is back playing, but I would pin him as the difference maker. If he plays, I would possibly edge Mosgiel. Without him, I can see Varsity's midfield 3 overpowering the game.

I wouldn’t be taking the young Nomads so lightly. They did finish 3rd in the MPL just behind Nelson. Handy side and will be even tougher now the game has been moved to the turf. I’m picking a Nomads win by a couple of goals.

Will Varsity be able to play the "total football" without Oban FSobservation?

Surely they can beat the young kids of Nomads?

I wouldn’t be taking the young Nomads so lightly. They did finish 3rd in the MPL just behind Nelson. Handy side and will be even tougher now the game has been moved to the turf. I’m picking a Nomads win by a couple of goals.

1 goal out.

Who's going to win the Championship?

And who thinks Cavy will beat Bay Olympic?

Wonder what Stu @FSobservation has to say about conceding a mountain of goals in the past 2 games , surley this cant be part of the total football plan.

Good to see the cream has risen to the top after all the hype early on in the season.

One has to find it interesting our “neutral” football observer (@FSobserver) has gone very quiet now that the “total footballing” Otago Uni have well and truly washed up on reality Island.

Haha yep was thinking this - never a chance he was a neutral. Every time I have watched them they have looked well out of their depth, and as I predicted their weak defence has been exposed time and time again. Bit of a reality check for the club.

Maybe Dunedin should only send two teams at least Mosgiel and Cavy have been competitive, varsity should have stayed at home.

I would like to see a two round competition to qualify for the SI league next year. It'll make sure the best three teams qualify. It's also a real shame that FS have decide to give away the Southern league trophy after 7-8 games the last two years. It shouldn't be up for grabs unless its a minimum two rounds.

Hello. I am still here, but I have chosen not to participate in what I can only call petulant ... nobody here can seem to hold a decent conversation without getting defensive. I only made this account over a year ago, just to try and gauge interest in the league down here and to try and do my bit to drum up support. The record will show I was a supporter of Dunedin Technical too, as I want Southern sides to succeed, no matter who they are. Yes, you're right... varsity aren't doing very well. The fact that you're happy about this because that is a reason to spite me is one reason why I choose not to even engage on this anymore. Yellowfever has good score updates (and the Mainland and Central threads are excellent and insightful), so that is now the extent of my following.

For the record once again, I am not affiliated with any club ... in fact one reason I have been absent is that I have been overseas and still am. I am sad that not all three Dunedin sides are doing as well as some of the Christchurch teams ... congratulations to Caversham and Mosgiel for really toughing it out. As for varsity, well I haven't seen them in a while but if they could tighten up, then that would hopefully increase their results next season.

So adios (that should give you a hint where I am) negative Southerners (not all of you), my apologies for trying to drum up a bit of conversation.
