Domey said that pre the A league draw the clubs get the opportunity to list a number of requests re scheduling.

Since NZF have not announced any AW games in March I would have thought they would request the bye round in Nov. But not sure how many bye rounds there are. And no guarantee FFA will listen to any Phoenix requests.

He also mentioned that if a team had more than a few players absent due to international duty they could request a postponement. But went on to say that was not preferable as it would mean rescheduling a mid week match. Meaning 3 match in a week and small crowd attendance likely at mid week games.

Soceroo's also have some Asian world cup qualifyers this A league season. October, November and March.

As I understand the math, every club should get two byes, with a third for some.

The Nix should be trying their best to get three, if they are looking to work with NZF as much as possible – round 1, to help free some players up to help the U23 men qualify for the Olympics; the weekend of November 15, and whatever March weekend is in the middle of the international window.

In my mind, the March one would be the least important – you either take the midweek hit or strike a deal with the new AWs coach, who will have already seen them play all season and had them in in November, and with no games scheduled and NZF's tight budgets, you could end up organising a bye for no reason.

I get the impression that NZF have gone after this game and actually approach them about playing in this window. They were the only euro team with no game lined up. I dont think NZF would have looked to play these guysbif there were more options.. last resort but at same time being proactive to get the fixture.

As I see things right now, any game for the AWs is a good game.

Actually seems they will all get three byes, as teams will play each other twice, then play six teams a third time, making for 26 matches across 29 rounds, so 3 rounds off for everyone.

Is 2020 OFC Nations Cup happening? If so would presumably be in May-June next year, so NZF might try organise a friendly(ies) in March 2020 window as preparation.

So if there are 3 byes over the A League makes sense for Nix to apply for byes in both November & March windows. By March there is also likely to be few players out injured, so wouldn't be great to lose another 3-5 to the AWs, in that window.

And yes a bye in the  first week also makes sense.

Could well be Western United start the A League with a home game (Victory or Melb City), and week 2 travel to Wellington for a tasty affair.

How many in the Nix likely to make the squad?

If Smith, Boxall and Reid are fit there is your back three with your back ups probably being Wynne based on the level he is playing and one of the U20's in Pjanker or Stringer, both playing overseas (Stringer needs a tab on Kiwis overseas).

In the middle, we would likely see Singh, Thomas, Rojas, Bell, Lewis with Rufer and maybe Payne or TWH. Assuming they are ahead of Musa, McGlinchey, Ridenton, and Just etc

Up front it's Wood, Barbs as your leading two, with McCowatt your third. Behind that you have De Jong and the tall lad playing in the USL and Max Mata next in line.

Marinovich goes as the keeper.

I think realistically we will only see 3 likely with 2 - 3 maybes.

Good summary, but it's Stanger.

Also don't forget Tuiloma as CB/DM. Cacace as well.

Nix could lose Cacace, McCowatt, Rufer, Marinovic and possibly Payne, plus Fenton (if fit). That's a fair chunk.

If the AWs coach is Buckingham, he may even do a deal with the Nix, and just take Marinovic (Sail is quality cover). He will know the other 5 well enough from his time in NZ. However most of the overseas pros he will barely know, so makes far more sense to get them in close up for a look.

Mcgarry, Musa, Brotherton, Collier, Adams, Nikko Boxall, Niko Kirwan etc. Do these guys cut the mustard?

The gaffer will have just over 2 years before the Intercontinental Playoffs in March 2022 to experiment, implement a style etc. Sounds a long time, but it may only be 12-15 games, with very limited time together each FIFA window. Better to look now at players he's never seen live before, rather than later.

Yay, Nix given the bye !!!

Anyone got thoughts on what the lineups will be for the Ireland and Lithuania games, all European based players I'm assuming will be available, assuming MLS players will be as well?

Hoping Reid and at a stretch Thomas will be back playing by then, so should have a close to full strength squad available to choose from.

Marinovic

M Boxall, Smith, Reid, Wynne, Cacace

Tuiloma, Thomas, Joe Bell

Rojas, Singh, Wood

Bench/squad - Woud, Tzanev, Brotherton, Mcgarry, Rufer, Musa, Lewis, Just, McCowatt, Barba, Collier, Brockie

Kyle Adams if Wynne still injured. Payne if need another CB/DM. Likewise de Jong if need another forward.

Brockie polarising choice. But for now think he may still be best backup to Wood, as lone striker. Will see plenty of likes of Waine over A League season. Interested to view Collier get some minutes.

If a decision toss up, I'd sway to guys who haven't featured for the AWs for 2 years (sine Peru playoffs) and/or guys that have never played for national team but are playing overseas. Hay will have plenty of time to assess those others playing closer to home in the A League.

Good squad but I'd have Fenton in RWB if fit and Boxall one of the starting 3 CB's in place of Wynne.

Since is frowned upon to have 12 on the field Wynne or Bell goes to the bench!

Am assuming Fenton will not be match fit by November. Roux I guess is another who comes into RB mix.

Personally would have Tuiloma in for Smith who would drop to the bench. Rufer/Musa in for that defensive midfielder position.

Tuiloma offers the physicality witch is needed looking at that midfield or Musa which would be good. Dont think rufer and thomas would be the best pairing there to similar.

Out of curiosity, Eire play Georgia & Switzerland this FIFA October window.

Lithuania have Ukraine & Serbia.

All games European Championship Qualifiers (ECQ).

In November window Eire have AWs, & then Denmark (ECQ). Lithuania Portugal (ECQ) & then AWs.

So both opposition sides may play weaker teams against the AWs, rightly focusing on their tougher Euro qualifiers.

Ireland its likely as the game against Denmark is a top of the table clash

Lithuania not so much as they only have 1 point in their group so are well out of the running for qualifying

Ireland lost 2-0 in Switzerland overnight.

Seamus Coleman got sent off at 76 mins. Eire down 1-0 at that point.

He also recently got sent off playing for Everton, against Burnley.

Ireland are still top of the group, just ahead of Denmark and Suisse, but the Irish have played a game more.

Their last Euro Qualifying pool game against the Danes in Nov window will be massive.

Expect them to roll out a ‘B’ team against AWs a few days prior. Still obviously a tough test for NZ. The Irish have a plethora of solid EPL, Championship and League One level players to choose from.

This is a strange appointment. Fallon has spent the last 2 years running his ice cream business, has been out of football as far as I can tell. In todays football scene real coaches are needed, the type who work at their craft, can design and run sessions for top level players. They need to be able to create training sessions and drills to fit international level game tactics and setups.  I cant work out what the point of this other than for the feel good factor etc.

Jason Batty i understand, he has been coaching for years. Coaching isnt just about having seen training drills and having been in international setups, its more  about the ability to teach which in itself is an art form which has to be learned and more importantly practised.

Cant help but feel this is going to end up being an underperforming period for the AW's. We have a great squad of talented youngsters coming through and they are going to be under resourced in terms of the ability to provide meaningful, top level, challenging and engaging training sessions that have to fit the short time constraints of international football. Just weird.
