0-0 v Vanuatu. Only saw the final 35 mins + 7 in stoppage time, but looked fairly even.

Beat PNG (9am Monday NZT) = Gold medal match (8am Saturday NZT)

Draw PNG = Bronze medal match (11am Saturday NZT)

Lose to PNG = depends what tiebreakers are, but should be GD. NZ will be +16 at best, Vanuatu will then need to get from -2 to better than NZ in their games v Samoa (Monday) and Tonga (Wednesday).

I didn't just mean the pitch. The officiating and the quality of football matched the pitch.

Is there anyone from this NZ team that's putting their hand up for Olympic Qualifying in September?

Tonga and Samoa - Meh... More interested in the results and performances against Vanuatu & PNG. Although it sounds like the Vanuatu game didn't reach great heights, it's surely a positive against their senior side, and shall we say one of the 'better teams' in Oceania.

Agree, these two games are very different propositions. To be fair, yesterday the pitch was appalling and the heat was 30 degrees, plus the commentator wondered if the referee had left his cards at home, which tells you it was very physical and going unpunished. These island games are not pretty, and Vanuatu just hoofed it long and chased at speed all game. I thought the 23s tried to pass but overall it was not easy on that bumpy, damp pitch and I would say a good result given all of this.

I did think the pitches would disintegrate over this tournament so no great surprise. They're good for one off games with the right preparation in between, but to have several games every couple of days, thrown in with some adverse weather and it looks like they've just gone to shark, which is unfortunate, but not entirely unexpected.

For what it's worth, I think Buckingham is doing a stand up job for our national sides. Didn't get too much of a lead in time with this tournament and pretty much had slim pickings to choose from in terms of players available and he's made it work so far, this despite the trying conditions and having a youthful setup at his disposal. Really hope he gets a look in for the AW's job.

Fully agree that Des and Miya have done an amazing job getting the teams into shape and selecting players that can do a job for them, despite all the obstacles and difficulties they have faced. What is pleasing to me is the team are still trying to play the same as his 20s did, and not the old way we got so used to age group sides and senior side playing.

1- 0 up at half time v PNG, thanks to a penalty from Olly White after Rogerson was flattened by the keeper. Game is played at very slow pace, seems too hot with this early start. PNG collecting yellows regularly.

They are both listed in the PNG team for the games but neither appear to have made an appearance unless they were in todays game against NZ. PNG are second behind New Zealand in Group A and will play the Bronze final against Fiji.

I noticed that Roy Krishna is turning out for Fiji in this tournament.

Predictably copping  a lot of physical attention from opposition players.

That 2-0 effort by the U23's vs a senior side like PNG in Pacific Island conditions cannot be underestimated.

That is a huge result for a group of players on the fringes of the U20 setup.

Only Rogerson having All Whites and Phoenix experience.

Effectively a fringe U20 squad, without the U20 WC standouts vs a side that took the All Whites to penalties in the Nations Cup final in 2016 - well-done team, a medal of some colour is assured.

I just read the NZ Football write up of the PNG game. Sounds like I'm doing PR for them or I'm Buckingham's boy. Sorry.

New Caledonia has a striker called Psycho (sic) for the final.

Should we be worried, or hope he gets carded early?

Good luck U23's.

I think that New Caledonia will prove very tough.

Seven players in their squad are playing in France.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Caledonia_national_football_team#Current_squad

19 year-old midfielder Jakob Jeno is on the books of major club Amiens in Ligue 1

The other six are in the fourth or fifth tier.

Key midfielder Cesar Zeoula has spent several seasons in the third tier though.

Tournament top-scorer Saiko (sounds great in English) plays for Neuville in France.
