Man, Pride are going to SMASH Central next week, two games and already scored 10 goals, beat Capital 4-0 who yesterday beat Central 5-0. Seems they are the team to beat in the early stages of the competition.

yeah, Central lost several players to Capital and Auckland and as a result have a very young team and are going to struggle this season. Wouldn't be surprised if the Pride score 10+ against them next week

Capital despite winning 5-0 weren't great, I had picked them for 2nd but to be honest that was with some bias, I think they'll do well to finish above 5th. They have been making some interesting selections.

Seems the way the table is at the moment will probably be about right with Pride, Auckland, Southern and Northern battleing for the top two spots with Capital, Central and WaiBOP making up the numbers.

Gonna be tough for table-topping Canterbury United Pride this afternoon against second-placed Northern with eight players away on international duty (six with the NZ u-17's and two with the senior Football Ferns).

Makes you realise how young these national league squads are when the majority of those six u-17's have been playing regularly for the Pride.

Northern will be missing nine players, due to the Ferns or Under 17s, so should even things.

So despite there not being any semi finals in the league this season, this weekends game between Canterbury and Auckland  will effectively be a semi final.

Northern Lights are in the final - if they beat WaiBOP they will host it

Canterbury United need a draw against Auckland to make the final

If they win and Northern lose the final will be in Canterbury

If Northern draw and Canterbury win the final will be in Canterbury (I think table decider is GD)

Auckland need to win and if they do they will be away to Northern

simple aye

Anyway I went to the Capital v Canterbury game last Saturday, which was also Emma Evans last home game in charge as shes' off to Oceania to be their womens development officer

here's my write up

If Northern get a say, probably McFetridge Park. As that is where their games have been this season.

Ha ha, until I saw the highlights I didn't even know Nicole Stratford was playing for Northern - it's a shock to realise someone from the first team in my own squad plays at such a level (apart from the Duncans, of course!)

"Strat" was also scoring goals for fun for OneSports and  helped us get promoted to NRFL over winter. My dream is to play for the reserves team, but they'll probably sign some 17 year old wondergirl instead

Good things -

WaiBOP return to Cambridge's John Kerkoff Park

Central using Massey University as a home ground

Southern taking a game to Invercargill.

Not so good - 4 fixture clashes in Auckland when Northern and Auckland playing at the same time in different parts of the city

When I did my end of season review last year, the one thing that came through loud and clear from the coaches was that the double round was a bad idea, very short turnaround, travel and no time for players to recover.

Did NZF listen? It appears not because yet again the two closest teams, Auckland & Northern play each other and not technically on the weekend, they have a Thursday night game and a Tuesday night game, a nice break of 5 days for their players to recover and no travel.

Meanwhile Canterbury play Southern and Capital play WaiBOP home and away a whole 2 days apart!!!!

It's worth remembering that the number 1 decider for when games are and aren't is travel availability and cost.

That heavily influences the double header games. Auckland teams can play each on a weeknight evening because they're a 30 minute drive apart. The other need significant travel times and hence are on Saturday/Labour day.

It's also a big reason why they don't stagger same day kick off times - just not enough flights going to get one team there earlier or one team home later.

Why they've not staggered the Northern/Auckland home games to various week.... yeah I can't answer that one.

Nix obviously didn't make any headway getting a women's team in the comp this year. Domey mentioned on the YF pod that they were keen. Would even up the number of teams. More opportunities etc.

I'm sure there is a lot of big picture stuff I don'y know about as to why it didn't happen this year. Hopefully NZF can plan for it next year and we can have a team in the W-League the year after.

yes it is worth remembering that NZF put cost ahead of player welfare. (part of cost savings I understand they asked Southern United to drive to Christchurch last season, hardly good prep \ recovery for the players, 2 games and 5 hours drive each way in 3 days)

Also doesn't really explain why they can't get Auckland or Northern to play a double header against Capital or Canterbury - at least rotate it around so it doesn't just give a massive advantage to those two teams

Dome alluded to the fact there were a few frustrations with NZF about this, with Weenix even offering to cover all the costs, but still getting nowhere. Sounds like the other federations are also worried they will lose their best young players, with fear many will choose to relocate to Wellington.

Of course all a bit short sighted, re the greater good of women's football. Dome stated Weenix first need to get a team into the national league, before they can setup a W League team - which would be a huge benefit to women's football in NZ. Hopefully they can find a solution, that keeps everyone reasonably happy.

This is what they want to do, but it's definitely not something they need to do.

Hi 20 Legend, in my experience (former long-time administrator currently serving a 1 year ban from the code) the "number 1 decider" for games at that time of year is actually availability of pitches.

My club attempted to accommodate WaiBOP women last year with what we consider an international-class surface at Gower Park.

However the problem with these sand carpet pitches is they require a spring and autumn renovation to keep them in top class condition. Typically in spring the turf will be scarified, cored, undersowed and 70 tonnes of sand spread on top, with a 6 week recovery time frame from early October.

This limits the availability of the pitch for matches, and with the need for the league to accommodate a home-away component of the draw it limits the availability of the pitch. Last summer half the games had to be played elsewhere.

We need to take our hat off to Cambridge for their community spirit in putting their hand up to accommodate WaiBOP this summer.

Though third party sources who have played there tell me their No 1 pitch is already in, erm, a less than perfect condition, and it obviously won't be getting the spring treatment, looking at that draw.

So that may be the trade-off: a pitch that can be made available regardless of other factors, rather than a top quality pitch where there are seasonal considerations to take into account.

Hope this helps.

no last year they reversed the rounds so the team you played in the first week was the team you played in the last week, this year they have gone for the more conventional rounds 1-6, then 7-12 so the team you play in week 1 will be who you play in the reverse fixture in round 7

Also it was Capital that got the bye on Labour weekend last season (Central this year)

Great look considering they are chasing coaches in the W League to quickly pay the 2k to get the required coaching qualifications whilst taking away any pathway of growth in the process.

Almost, Week 12 and Week 13 have been swapped compared to Week 5 and Week 6.

There should be more swapping of rounds to negate the carry-over effect you get with most round robin algorithms.  Note: how in weeks 2,3,6,7,9,10 Capital are playing the team with a bye the round before.  I'd be upset with that if I was them.

The other thing with most round robin algorithms is you should be able to find draw positions where for two teams one is always at home and one is always away and vice versa.  So note how Southern and Auckland are never at home or away on the same weekend (except for what occurs with Round 7).  So if you didn't want Auckland and Northern both at home on same weekend,  then it should be possible to factor that into the draw (subject to ground availability etc)
