FRUSTRATED coach Ernie Merrick conceded that the Newcastle Jets do not have the budget to bring in another goal-scorer and hopes the impending return of Joey Champness will help provide a lift for the struggling outfit.

Champness scored from outside the box in his return from a broken foot as the Jets gave up a late goal to go down 3-2 to Sydney FC in the national youth league game at Lambert Park on Saturday.

The winger, who was a finalist for the A-League’s young player of the year last season, adds a different dimension to the Jets attack with his speed and power.

He was used mainly as an impact player last season, scoring five goals, and is likely to be on the bench for the match against Sydney FC at Jubilee Oval on Saturday.

He hasn't even charted a song afaik. It is a brave move, I wish him all the best in chasing his dream. Does mean he misses out on playing the Olympics for Aussie. Arnie is in charge of that team and he tends to hold a grudge, so maybe opens the door up for a switch to NZ if he returns to football.

True story, Callum Hood was a promising Australian football player and at 17 years old he came back from a fully funded academy tour to Brazil and announced that he was giving up football to concentrate on his music. Within 12 months he and his band, 5 Seconds of Summer were touring with One Direction and are now the best selling Australian band of all time.

That's quite a feet considering ACDC sold 200+ million albums and Back in Black alone is one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Silverchair sold around 10 million albums, Savage Garden 23 million albums.

Had a look at Wikipedia and 5 seconds of summer 3.5 million odd albums, which is obviously a huge achievement but quite far from being one of the biggest selling Australian bands of all time. Still, it would seem he made the right decision - it's still a risk, I'd imagine there's less people making a living off of music than off of football.

considering the amount of hot garbage making it into the trap spotlight and how saturated the genre is, with any 15 year old kid able to record a track over a beat and upload it to SoundCloud, I'd say so. not something I'd really replay or remember though

I think so.
I would place him ahead of Mata and Myer at this stage. Rogerson maybe too.
Hay won't carry the same loyalties as Buckingham.

Was hoping this would happen. Offers something different to Just on the left and adds depth to the right who doesn't have a natural starter in my eyes currently.

Good to see the national team player pool get a little deeper. He's a good age, playing regular minutes at a good level.

Could someone who's more up with the play than myself on eligibility please enlighten me - if he gets selected for the Oly Whites and plays does that mean he won't be able to jump ship back to Aussie? Or does that only relate to full international caps for WCQ's, Nations Cup and the such?

Boxy is the gospel when it comes to these sort of things, but my recollection is that nowadays they call it a 'one time switch' meaning you can't go back to your original national team

The Newcastle Herald understands that Jets are not willing to release the 24-year-old to another A-League club, with a potential sale overseas a possibility.

Maybe there is something to that Turkey rumour?

Meanwhile, the Jets have agreed to the release of Joe Champness.
The Jets are finalising a transfer fee which will enable him to formalise a deal to play in Turkey.

Good on him!  Not bad for a rapper and potentially very promising for NZ football, unless the ozzies grab him again.

No, it was metnioed in another thread that if you play more than three competitive games over the age of 21 you're tied to the country. The olympics did that.

You can also only change your association once, he had to do that to play in the Olympics. Pretty sure age group teams still count for that?

Good on him, thought he looked like, someone with a lot of pace at the olympics and some control and obviously the Turks thought so.

The city looks a nice one on the Black Sea and only 100k.

The Turkish league isn’t a bad one. Salary wise they rank above the Belgium’s, Holland’s, Portugal’s, Swiss leagues of this world.

I believe so, unless that was also slipped into the rule changes they made in September last year. I remember before Woud debuted, when he was just in the U20s, he got called into a Netherlands U21 training squad, and the talk was if he played he wouldn’t be able to switch back to NZ.

Either way Champness is locked as internationals over the age of 21 (youth or full) lock you, as the rule change was more to stop countries capping 17/18/19yo to stop them from playing for other countries. So, for example, if Stamenic plays an OFC qualifier in January he would previously be locked, but now he could still switch to another country.

Also brought in was clarity on the rules of kids born overseas who move to NZ, as now only 3 years residency is required for kids under 10 when they moved, or 5 years for age 10-18, so that rule might’ve made someone like Liam Jordan eligible, and also would have sorted out the Deklan Wynne issue.

From Flying Kiwis. Champness already in Turkey. Mods can you please update his club.
https://twitter.com/i/status/1428374928072577027

JOWIC on the move! Fresh from swapping international allegiances to the nation of his birth and representing the OlyWhites at the Olympics, it’s off to Turkey for Joseph Champness. Which is a funky one because his club stuff has been very weird for a couple years. Ever since he left the Newcastle Jets to spend a year in Los Angeles chasing his hip hop dreams.

The story goes like this: when Champness returned to Oz, the Jets believed they had his contract rights until 2022, which was when his previous deal was due to expire, but Champness lived in Brisbane and was stuck there during the pandemic and ultimately signed with the Roar... to the complaints of Jets officials. Eventually it was arranged that he’d play for Brisbane on loan, which he did, but the same confusion was threatening to emerge this season as Champness still hadn’t reported for preseason. Even after fellow NZ Olympian and new Jets signing Dane Ingham had done so, Champness still hadn’t. Word was he wanted to wrangle another stint with the Roar however the Jets weren’t having that. With one year left on his contract, they said if you’re playing A-League then you’re playing for us... but we will sell you overseas if it happens. And it has. Finally everyone’s happy.

Giresunspor just got promoted back to the top flight in Turkey after finishing second in the second tier last time, losing 2-0 to Galatasaray in their first game at this level since 1977. But hopes aren’t too high for them to stay there. Player turnover has been huge with 16 new players signing for the club and almost that many moving out. They’re favourites to go back down... but JOWIC may have something to say about that. He’s signed on a two year contract with an option for a third (Giresunspor have also reportedly added Aussie international Aziz Behich on loan too).

And, of course, as someone who switched allegiances to represent New Zealand he’ll come up against a fella who switched allegiances away from Aotearoa in USA international Tyler Boyd in the Süper Lig. Not at Besiktas though. Boyd fell out of favour there last season, surprisingly cut from their squad registration list entirely for the first half of the season. He did eventually come back into the mix for four starts with a goal but then went and played on loan with Sivasspor from February until the end of the campaign... scoring 5 goals in 14 appearances. The manager listed him as a fella who wasn’t in the plans moving forward during the offseason hence he wasn’t in the squad for the opening weekend fixture. But never fear because he’s wiggled his way over to Çaykur Rizespor on loan.

Up Next: Giresunspor vs Trabzonspor, Monday at 6.45am (NZT)

Well was on the bench as Giresunspor (last), lost 0-1 to top of the table Trabzonspor. So I guess Jets have agreed on a fee.
