Mōrena! Here at Fever HQ, we're celebrating Māori Langauge Week by unveiling our new Te Reo name for Yellow Fever: Ngā Wana Kōwhai.

The name has many potential meanings, with the main two being "The shoots of the Kōwhai Tree" or "The Yellow Shoots".
It uses the imagery of the Kōwhai tree, which are common across Aotearoa and the Pacific, and that each member of the Yellow Fever is one of the shoots from this tree. This imagery captures the connection that each person has to the Nix, while also being unique and separate.
Ngā Wana Kōwhai is also a play on words, as the word “wana” also means passionate, inspiring and exciting, while shooting is obviously a football term.
We'd like to thank Tuparahuia Pita and the rest of the team at Te Wharewaka o Pōneke for working alongside us to help us develop the translation of our name!

Also,  sometimes the nectar in kowhai flowers will ferment and the tui who feed on it end up getting drunk and rowdy

Tenuous link but Kowhai Intermediate School, is about a two iron from Eden Park, where the Nix play twice this season.
