Reid update from this week's Flying Kiwis.

"Manuel Pellegrini: “Winston Reid continues to be injured but for only a couple of weeks more.”

There you go. It’s a small update but after nearly eighteen months now since his last Premier League game a few more weeks isn’t that much longer to wait. Reid was involved in a few cheeky preseason games but then disappeared from vision toward the end of those preparations and despite rumours that he’d suffered (another) setback it turns out they were just wisely taking it slow and since then he’s remained on an inidivualised training programme. Dunno exactly how long it’ll be until he’s back training without limitations but we’re almost there.

The Hammers beat Norwich 2-0 this week, having also advanced in the League Cup by the same scoreline against Newport County. Since losing 5-0 to Manchester City in the opening weekend they’ve bounced back with seven points from a possible nine since and with an international break up next week that’s one less game until Reidy’s back at it.

Up Next: 7am on Tuesday 17 September at 7am, away to Aston Villa (NZT)"

Update from this week's Flying Kiwis.

"Manuel Pellegrini: “The injuries - Winston Reid is recovering from his injury. I hope he will next week starting working with the squad. Probably the first game Winston will play will be with the U23s. It may be next week but it could be one week more.”

Straight from the mouth of the man who matters. Reid made a comeback from injury in preseason but it only amounted to 112 minutes across their first three friendly games and then he’s been absent again ever since, taking only limited part in training as he rebuilds his fitness levels after so long out. But he’s close now. He’s closer than he’s ever been to that return… and it sounds like it might be worth keeping an eye on those U23 games."

At this rate of recovery, he might be ready to play in about three year's time.

Sad if so. Reid is only 31, so hopefully he can nurse a few more years out of his body.

Persistent knee problems saw Nelsen retire at 35.

Why would he return to NZ? He left here aged 10, is married with kids living in London. He can find better gigs there and not have to upheave his life.

I'd also add he has 4 years left on a stupidily rich contract. No one above soil would ever walk away from that

Yeah kinda crazy Hammers agreed to sign him up to 2023 back in 2017, ie 6 yr deal.

Even if that deal was obviously signed before his bad knee injury, was a risk given he'll be age 35 in 2023, and EPL is a brutal comp.

Maybe they can loan him out to a MLS type team (less games, less wear & tear), and part share his salary or something. Beckham needs to create a team in Miami for 2020! Or a week on week off proposition for a Championship side. That's if his body never comes fully right.

Crazy to think he's 31 already. Seems like just yesterday he was a kid at the World Cup.

I hope his agent was suitably reimbursed for that 6 year contract. That's staggering considering his injuries.

I am actually struggling to think of anyone on a longer one in the EPL?

7 years anyone?

I know you gotta make money when you can but with all his injuries I'd feel just a little bit guilty about taking the money, Especially when you are probably already set up for life.

Doesn't sound great, and Hammer's fans saying even though he has been a loyal servant time to let him go, ie take the insurance payout

Hammers sneak a 1-0 win at Chelsea.

Reid now off the injured list I note with Soccerway.

Wonder if he is close to a match day bench spot yet.

Good to hear. Might be hard to get back into the squad if they keep pulling off results like this one.

Here's our team to take on Brighton U23s. #COYI

One more step along the way back to recovery. Not only did Winnie sneak in another appearance for the U23s but he went as far as playing the full ninety minutes, something he hadn’t done since before he was injured, 21 months ago. He played 60-odd minutes for that team a month or so earlier and was replaced by a 15 year old when he was subbed. Then he played 45 minutes for the All Whites. Now a ninety minute effort against Brighton U23s (WHU won the game 3-1), coming through unscathed as he ticks off another milestone in the road back to full fitness.

And then, at the gaffer’s very next press conference...

Manuel Pellegrini: “Winston Reid is playing already 90 minutes with the U23s, so next week he will start working with us.”

Now there’s been a fair bit of shifting of the old goalposts with Winnie in recent times from the Hammers so here’s hoping they actually stuck to this idea and he’s started training full time with the first team again. But it’s all progress. It’s all heading in the right direction.

Unused sub in a 1-2 loss. Hammers conceded 2nd goal at 56 min, which probably ruined any chance of Reid getting mins, as they chased an equaliser.

West Ham 19th, 1 spot above the drop zone.

Nervous times for Pellegrini.

What the hell were they thinking, I don't think the gaffer was the issue but if Pocc is still floating around London we should nab him before a top European team takes him. Moyes or Harry is a step backwards
