Nope, doesn't look like it. Looks like half of them are from the Phoenix Academy based at Lower Hutt. Are any of those originally from Chch?

In other news, any comments on our players/coaches of the year announced by Mainland? When was the last time a CCL player or coach was nominated for an award? Just interesting the Danny Halligan is nominated for the Mainland Coach of the year.

It’s very interesting considering John Brown had a similarly successful season last year on a fraction of the United budget and wasn’t considered. Another questionable selection is Matt Jones for defender of the year, from a Nomads team that conceded an incredibly high number of goals. He missed out on being nominated for young player of the year to Jordan Spain who misses out completely on a defender of the year nomination...riddle me that?

Very interesting Halligan nominated. I think I could coach the Ch$$ch United team to win the CCL with the massive budget available.

If I was looking at CCL coaches I would have picked the Burwood coaching team - finished 2nd in the CCL (from last position the previous year), 3rd in the MPQL (2nd on the MPQL results), no budget and have to put up with a crap President.

Clearly I'm biased, but hells bells :)

Good point made by Master_Sleuth that John Brown was not considered last year.

I suspect Halligan’s nomination had something to do with United’s two cup runs as well and the fact they beat every MPL team (excluding Coastal who they did not play) on the way.

I look forward to seeing the mighty Hurunui Rangers coach who gets paid in cigarettes and alcohol getting nominated next year then.

And my question still stands about when the last time a coach (or anyone really) got nominated for player or coach of the year.

I have no allegiance to Burwood Muzz but I couldn't agree with you more. I remember Wayne Bennett being asked what made him a great coach & his answer was "great players." $h$h Utd bought a good MPL team to play in a much inferior league so they should have comfortably won all their games - no offence to the other teams in the CCL.

What Burwood achieved by finishing 2nd against clubs which are pretty much all bigger & better resourced than them was incredible, it would have been a good earner on the betting site if you dropped a sly $100 on them to finish 2nd back in March.

Well done Burwood

Unsure if it is a done deal yet as aware several clubs are interested - maybe a change of a make up of the teams contesting the SFL or the format to get the league over the line for 2020..

TBH I was a supporter of it but needed to be a full blown league over 2 rounds to be meaningful. The format they tried just sucked money out of clubs for no real gain anywhere apart form seeing clubs play different teams. Added nothing to the code. And it barstardised the MPL, nice try but it makes sense to pull the pin now. How about D Tech and/or one other enter the MPL?? Now there's a thought. Or the top 2 or 3 ChCh clubs enter the Dunedin comp? Or Mainland and Southern get there heads ogether and call for 6 entries in a fully funded 3 round Southern League?? We can do better.

Copied from Ferrymead Bays facebook page:

Ferrymead Bays Football is pleased to announce exciting news - introducing Alan Walker as the Men's Senior Mainland Premier League Head Coach for 2020.

Alan has a wealth of knowledge and experience in football, having spent 10 years leading Mainland Football as Federation Development Manager.

As well as introducing a number of new football initiatives in his time at Mainland Football, success was also measured with Canterbury United Pride, National Age Group Tournament and Canterbury United Youth winning on the field, with multiple national titles.

Alan was Head Coach for Canterbury United Youth in 7 National Youth League campaigns, winning 2 titles and being Runners-Up twice, finishing the 2018 season top of the table, but accredited Runners-Up based on a head-to-head result ruling with Auckland City.
Alan has been a Cantabrian for 14 years, originally moving to Sumner and started his coaching in Christchurch with Rangers FC before coaching Coastal Spirit in their inaugural season, prior to moving on to Mainland Football.

He has a father who holds a 60 year Services to Football Award from the English FA and has been immersed in football all his life.

Born and raised in Manchester as a Manchester City supporter, Alan achieved UEFA B License in his late 20's and has gone on to become a NZF Advanced Coach Developer, as well as holding a Oceania/NZF B License, with A License pending.

We look forward to welcoming Alan into the Bays family and continuing to see his passion and love of the game within our senior MPL team.

Yes ChCh Technical (10th) were one of the three clubs that faced relegation was the MPL was reduced from 12 to 10 teams, along with Canterbury University (11th) and Woolston Working Mens Club (12th), who both were automatically relegated.

ChCh Technical then played Cashmere Wanderers home and away to see which side would play in the MPL for 2003. ChCh Technical won their home league 3 - 1 with Cashmere Wanderers winning at home 3 - 0 to win 4 - 3 and aggregate.

The two sides then met again in the promotion series at the end of the 2003 season with ChCh Technical again winning their home leg 3 - 1 with Cashmere Wanderers winning at home 2 - 1 so Technical won promotion 4 - 3.

Many would not regard ChCh Technical as the same club as Cashmere Technical as ChCh Technical first merged with Woolston WMC to become Woolston Technical in 2007 who then in turn merged with Cashmere Wanderers to become the present Cashmere Technical in 2012.

Same vain as FC Twenty11 not the same as Shamrock / Riccarton merging to become Avon United who then joined forces with Burnside (formerly Burndale) to evolve as FC Twenty11.

Woolston and Tech did it really tough after Christchurch City disbanded and it went to Canterbury United. Both had a lot of debt and a lot of players went elsewhere for the 2002 season - Ferrymead and New Brighton were the big beneficiaries if I remember rightly hence both Woolston and Tech getting relegated. Tech were on the end of some cricket scores that season but I remember going to watch Tech play Woolston at Ensors Rd and they won about 8 or 9 nil.

Woolston ended up not entering a team in the Canterbury league in 2004, but entered a team in the Chatham Cup which was mainly a mix of Presidents players and got knocked out by CHCH Boys at English Park. Wasn’t until 2005 until they had a first team again.

It was Woolston that were on the end of the cricket scores. Technical finished their 22 games with 42 goals for and 41 against with their biggest loss being 4 - 0 against Rangers and finished the season on 22 points.

Woolston did not pick up a point scoring just 7 goals (one of those was and own goal) while conceding 132. Their biggest defeat was 12 - 0 to Technical at Ensors Road(which is not surprising the heaviest ever win / defeat in the MPL).

They also conceded double figures against New Brighton (11 - 1) and Bays (10 - 1). They also lost 8 - 0 (5 times), 6 - 0 (twice), 5 - 0 (3 times) and both 4 - 0 and 3 - 0 (twice).

In other news, there won't be any South Island League as we had it the past 2 seasons, which is pretty disappointing. Top two from each league (Mainland and Southern) will play a semifinal and then a final. So I guess we go back to a 3 round MPL, which starts in seven weeks!
