Surely he would be a good pick up for the Nix. Left footed DM player.

Similar player to Payne and TAHW I guess. But Musa could also fit in quite nicely to that left CB role.

If we are not even using TAHW then I don't see the point in getting Musa

He is a decent player and a Kiwi. We should try to get all the good Kiwis we can, we need competition for places.

Why should we have all the good kiwis only for them to play for the WeeNixs or be bench. They need game time not bench time.

The clubs goal is to win games, that requires having as many of the best possible players available to you. If you want to focus on Kiwis getting game time, you need to start accepting the results the Nix are getting then.

Clayton Lewis has been snapped up by Auckland City. But he has stated he would love to go to Phoenix if a offer comes. So waiting for January transfer window.....

He was in good nick because he was playing and training at a good level regularly. Have to work hard to keep up the pro routine for Jan then. And who would he replace?

He doesn't have to replace anyone, he would need to add competition and provide another option for Talay.

We have two roster spots open. If we could sign both Lewis and Musa in January, we be foolish not too sign both. You can't have too many good players.

I reckon that Lewis would push Davila. Left footer that can play centrally or start wide and cut in.

Tommy Smith has not had his contract option taken up. Would be a great signing for the NIX and would provide a real threat at set-pieces.

Not sure about Collier though, might make a decent squaddie??

Smith at the back pushing DeVere on the bench would complete our squad!

It sounds like Smith is re-negotiating a contract with the Rapids - he was on pretty decent coin there (from memory around $600k US). Looks like they may want him to stay there but on reduced wages. Smith's also said that he wants to return to Ipswich at some point, and settle back in England with his wife. Long story short - virtually zero chance of Smith coming here.

Not sold on Collier, think we have good young Kiwi options in that position at the club already, and if we were to bring another one in, we should really go after Just.

The thing with Collier is he does bring a unique set of skills, a big man who is a good dribbler, so would be something different off the bench. The Phoenix have pretty good depth that they don't really need to make any signings in January, only way I can see it happening is if they need to make a move now to secure a New Zealand player while they are available, like James Musa, who could actually give Rufer and Steinmann a good run for a starting spot. Clayton Lewis may struggle to win a contract ahead of Sam Sutton.

I would go as far as say that if we want Taylor leading from the back then we should not even think about Smith.

Why not when the only other viable option alongside Taylor right now is DeVere?

He has been captain for the All Whites, still possibly the youngest in All White history, and at club level only played for two clubs, over 250 games for Ipswich - yes, some issues regarding making himself eligible for the AWs a few years back but overall not an indication that he has been a problem with the teams he has played for.

He would be much better options than we currently have and others have said he is unlikely to come here, but hypothetically he was interested and wasn't asking for a ridiculous salary I would take him.

Spot on. Would be a hell of a lot better than DeVere, who may be a good bloke but his legs are gone.

He's on almost a million nz. If he cost the same as DeVere I'd agree, despite his fu to fans, but we'd be better off spending the cash he'd expect elsewhere.

I'd say Smith would have zero interest in relocating his young family to NZ, unless the Nix offered very big money. He's far more an Englishman than a Kiwi. By comparison Steven Taylor was a single bloke looking for an overseas adventure

If Smith's negotiations with the Rapids fall over he'll be back in East Anglia.

Sadly I think you're right coochiee - still though, we should give it a crack.

And if not him, getting a better CB than DeVere should be priority - someone who is perhaps not getting as much game time as they would like in say Serie B, lower Championship/League One or similar...

What is interesting is that Ipswich are currently 2nd in League One, and so looking at this early stage (17 games into a 44 game season) a chance of being promoted.

If they end up back in The Championship, they would you think be looking to open the cheque book a bit in 2020, to strengthen their squad. In that case Smith may not fit the bill, being 2-3 years older since he last played for the Tractor Boys, and back then he had already been demoted to squaddie/bench status.

Still there is probably plenty of other League One level sides around the UK, that would seriously look at Smith for a year or so. Maybe Huddo will pop up as manager at Accrington Stanley or somewhere!

One attraction Nix may have is a comparatively shorter A League season, and played in warmer weather (similar to MLS) - than the lower level English winter football slogfest.

All moot if he can renegoiate with the Rapids.

To be fair Smith did grow up in New Zealand and has returned for his off-season holidays on occasion. But he’d have to take a huge pay cut. Nando Pijnaker would have been a more realistic option but that never materialised.

How many years did Smith spend in NZ as a boy?

Don't know many Kiwi kids called Tommy, and neither remember him visiting NZ at all apart for football - not that these things matter much, but bit different to say Reid who was born in NZ and has family there.

Moved to NZ when he was 8 years old (1998) then appears to have signed for Ipswich U18 in 2008 so possibly 10 years?

Can't find any specific reference other than "grew up" or "spent his youth" in NZ...

EDIT: It's probably less - according to this, he signed his first professional contract in 2007, by which time he was already a product of the Ipswich YT - so you'd think he'd been there 2-3 years by that point.

Yeah I have feeling El Grap has it about right. So saying he grew up in NZ is a bit of a stretch, plus I thought all his whanau were in Blighty.

His ties to NZ ain’t that strong, plus his wife and kids are English.

Also isn't he Ipswich's longest ever servicing player (most games?).

Not sure if he has coaching aspirations, but from memory he has setup some sort of youth academy in the Ipswich area.

Like him or not, he is an experienced leader. He may be seeking to move into an off field role back at the Tractor Boys in due course. Not sure if heading to all the way to NZ rather than the UK somewhere, would fit in with plans like that if they exist.

From memory his family migrated to NZ, setting up home in Papamoa when he was in primary school.  I believe he moved to Auckland as a teen to play for Westlake Boys and was spotted by Ipswich when touring England with the NZ Secondary Schools team.  It seems the only reason he moved back to England at that stage was because he was good at football - if he hadn't been signed as a pro chances are he'd have remained in NZ?

Don't know him, have never met him, but I think his connection to this country would be as least as strong as any of the non-NZ born players who have represented us (like Smeltz?)

I wonder where his parents & siblings are?

I've never heard mention of him visiting any family in NZ, unlike say Reid now & again.

Reid setup an academy in NZ, Smith in East Anglia.

Flipping across the Tasman, for 'AusKiwis' like Moss & Smeltz would be dead easy in comparison to uprooting from the UK/US to NZ. Esp if you have a young family, plus UK business interests.

Just don't see the Nix/NZ as an option for him, unless he was dead out of other club options, at comparable pay.

Anyway all moot if he stays in Colorado.

I vaguely remember they all moved back to UK when Tommy signed as he was still young?

Talay declined the chance to re-sign him in the off season, so it's not gonna happen. We have 2 roster spots left, Lewis and Musa would be my wish list.
