First game confirmed @ Seddon Fields, 3pm V Weenix. Good way to start the season off.

all their games are supposedly to be played there

time was NZF(A) would kick teams out of the National League for not having an enclosed ground - obviously not a worry anymore!!!!

Suburbs have played at fencilbles ground last few years and that has no barriers or fences at all

That is another issue NZF should address

For Suburbs, even less in the way of barriers or fences at Madills this year than Riverhills last year I would've thought

For Waitak at Seddon at least there is decent fence between spectators and the turf

It's our top league, playing on a park gives the impression that NZF and those clubs don't really care about the league or the fans

I get that but it clearly dosn't effect the quality seeing as last year Waitakere played in a Stadium and Suburbs played in a park and the quality on the field couldn't have been more different.

Ideally it would be great to get clubs into a stadium but not to any detriment to the on-field product.

I would say in Auckland that Seddon Fields is at the top end of Club venues (probably only behind Kiwitea Street) so I think it's a great move from Waitakere to play there instead of Trusts.

If the games were really well attended I would probably want to see more stadiums being used but the crowd numbers are just not there.

Eastern Suburbs played at Riverhills (Fencible's ground) which has metal barriers along the sidelines lines, and banks at either end.

As far as NZD is concerned, I don't think "a decent fence" is much of a priority compared to having spectator seating. Not sure how Seddon fields will solve that but Madills will have temporary seating up I imagine.

But I agree with you chopper, Seddon Fields is light years above playing out of Trusts Stadium where the best seats are literally 150 metres away from either goal posts.

If the pitch at Madills is better than Riverhills it's also a massive improvement there as well and I don't think anyone gives a fudge that it doesn't have a fence.

Long term I think clubs need to look at grounds like Glenfield, Ellerslie, or Birkenhead and developing them into Kiwitea-esque stadiums.

Chops, aren't Ellerslie's new club houses a step in that direction?

The bigger problem is they look at the quality of football and say the same thing. Can't see fences being high on the NZF list of major factors in improving the league.

There needs to be some standard, It doesn't have to be big but it least make it consistent.  It looks horrible on TV at some of these "temporary" premiership grounds.

Improvements don't have to be big or expansive just well thought out.  An example of this would is Gower Park.  Melville have placed together over the last 10 years one of the best boutique Northern league grounds.

In my opinion, it not good enough for a team in the national league to choose a park put up some temp signboards and a temp stand and call it home for 6 months then move on.

Kind of - although our new clubrooms won't be overlooking turf - they will be overlooking the grass as that has a bigger impact on our community.

This is my take on it - If a club really wants to charge for their games then they will have to find a venue to be externally fenced.

if the pitch is fenced (rope, pipe or other) it's a competition regulation and for me it dosn't matter which way that is achieved as long as things like pitch quality and changing rooms etc are meeting the standards.

Centre Park is arguably the second best venue for football in Auckland with the stands and fencing. Shame about the pitch...

If the pitch is not a consideration I would put Bill McKinley Park ahead of Centre Park

Could you look at making the grass in front of the clubrooms the number 1 pitch? (Ignoring of course cricket and other users)

I really really wish Bill McKinley was grass. With another stand down the opposite side it would be perfect for everything that wasn't quite big enough for North Harbour. Imagine the Chatham Cup final there instead.

they had a final replay there in 1983 - Mt Wellington beat Gisborne 2-0. My dad went to it and said the atmosphere was fantastic, those were in the days when Gisborne used to take a couple of bus loads of supporters to away games

It is a shame they can't / won't sort out the turf, as well as being a decent ground, it's alos got a fair bit of history - it was where NZ beat Mexico 4-0 which was the game that is credited with giving the players and coaches the belief that the could qualify fro the World Cup in 82

Bar and one of the slidelines was full. 300 feels optimistic, I'd guess 100-150. To put in context I thought it was only 50 odd more than an NRFL Western Springs game.

On the game - Waitakere would've had about 3 shots. First Waitakere goal was outrageous, player took a quick free kick about 10 yards away from the actual foul, which took out the entire Weenix defensive line and played a quick through ball. Never should've been allowed.

I would have thought it was closer to 300 than 150. Certainly more than last season. Strong Western Springs flavour to the whole ocassion.. Unless you were up on the clubrooms deck not the greatest viewing for the casual spectator. Can really feel the heat radiating off the turf when leaning against the fence . Two pretty ordinary sides. Waitak look to have a bit more spirit than before so may be harder to beat - well resourced coaching wise - Milicich (DOF) , Hobson and McPherson (who i didn't see there ). Very young side. Weenix pretty  unimpressive - Sutton stood out as skilful and a good leader - the rest not up to much. Waitak equaliser a joke - free kick taken quickly miles away from offence. 2nd goal a calamitous mistake by defender. Weenix had heaps of possession in 2nd half but couldn't score. Worth the free admission and parking not as bad as I thought it would be .

Pretty one sided game against Southern - Southern have made good progress last few years.

Apparently now there is 2 coaches with court orders against Waitakere United. Wonder will NZF step in at any point and clean up the mess!

Riverhills - great little football ground, and yep no fence, just a steep bank at the Ti Rakau Drive end. Still didn't get the whole Eastern Suburbs games being held there though, they were one of our biggest rivals!

Something about Waitakere really excites me this season. All the guys they have from Springs and some young talent that I really like the look of. The Ukranian keeper Bolharyn and Dawson Straffon especially look nice imo

I've seen 2 of their games. They don't seem as bad as their results but they are in desperate need of a striker. They seem ok in the back half of the pitch but up front is just this glaring hole.

Don't think they are doing that bad for a very low budget exercise. Most of the money (what little there is) has probably gone on coaching.

Realistically most of their players are inexperienced Northern League players , apart from Burfoot. Was really men against boys at the Auckland City game - could have been more than 6-2.
