A Fans Plea through FTBL

"So please rather than ridicule us, and call for our expulsion, relocation, demotion etc, take a moment and put yourself in our position.

The A League needs to strengthen and expand, not keep deleting Clubs and Regions from inclusion. The Central Coast has a population of approximately 300k, and is increasing every year.

We also have an exceptionally high Football participation rate, and one of the highest per capita membership/supporter rates. Can Australian Football and the A League really afford to alienate such fans and communities? That would seem to be very counterproductive to me."

This is correct. You can't just make up new regions and new football teams and think they will be more successful. They have to get better, everyone has to get better.

Battling A-League outfit Central Coast Mariners are facing relegation at the end of next season if they collect another wooden spoon.

Wellington Phoenix are also in the gun as they battle to hit a series of Football Federation Australia performance metrics by the end of 2019-20.

The current CPA (Club Participation Agreement) stipulates that any club which finishes last three years in a row, or four out of six seasons can be relegated.

The Mariners, who are away to Melbourne Victory on Sunday at AAMI Park finished last in 2015-16 and 2017-18 and need a minor miracle to avoid the wooden spoon this season.

The Gosford club, who replaced coach Mike Mulvey with Alen Stajcic, have won twice in 24 games, securing a miserly 10 points - five behind Brisbane Roar - while shipping 62 goals.

FFA chief executive David Gallop, who admitted the Mariners operated in a tough market, said underperforming clubs need to be held to account.

“It is far too early in the process to suggest what might be included in any CPA going forward but consideration would need to be given to the process for any club that underperforms consistently,’’ Gallop said.

“The proper management of any league requires KPIs that assist the continued good performance of the constituent clubs and contribute to the strength of the league as a whole.

“Any new operating model for the A League will need to take on that responsibility. The current clause indicates grounds for a review rather than anything automatic.”

While the new A-League operating model is due to be resolved by June 30, the Mariners’ results are now under the blowtorch.

“If the club finishes last in the A-League for three consecutive seasons of the term or finishes last in four out of six seasons, the FFA may notify the club that it is not satisfied with the club’s compliance,” the CPA states.

Clauses 17.4 and 17.5 state: “If within 30 days of receipt of a notice FFA is still not satisfied that the club can and will continue to meet its obligations under this agreement, FFA may … implement the requirement of a bank guarantee or (call a status meeting).

“If the club and FFA have not been able to resolve any one or more of the issues set out in the notice and one is either a flagrant or serious breach of this Agreement or a material failure of the club to meet its obligations and Minimum Performance Measures over the period leading up to the review point, FFA may terminate this Agreement with immediate effect by giving notice to the club.”

It’s understood that the existing CPA will be largely retained when the A-League becomes independent next season.

Gold Coast United was the last A-League club to be relegated, in 2012, after breaking several other CPA rules, paving the way for Western Sydney Wanderers to enter.

As it stands, the Mariners could only be relegated to the state league (National Premier Leagues), although the release of the FFA’s second division White Paper is imminent.

Promotion-relegation has been a hot topic in Australian soccer, with grassroots and traditionalists calling for the system to be opened up, a la most European leagues including England, Italy, Spain and Germany

Interesting.  There is clearly an incentive not to be a bunch of laggards every season regardless of whether there is a 2nd division or not; although I've always assumed these factors for being relegated are mostly financial rather than just getting the wooden spoon.

Central Coast Mariners receive offers for A-League licence

Central Coast owner Mike Charlesworth is believed to have received two unsolicited bids in the past two months from separate consortiums in both Canberra and Brisbane.

In both cases, the approaches were based on buying the licence that Charlesworth has and moving it away from the Central Coast – a radical move that would require the assent of both the other clubs and FFA.

"The Central Coast Mariners hope to be running their own stadium by the beginning of next season, after local council chiefs received a key report that recommends they hand Central Coast Stadium over to a private operator.

On Wednesday Mariners CEO Shaun Mielekamp will submit the club’s formal proposal to become the first A-League team running its own ground, in a move he said would change the economics of the club — and secure its future in Gosford."

Think they mean to line up the players like you would for a lineout to confuse the opposition and how to mark the players. Then just before the ball is played, they make their runs

I always remember when my sister played her first game of football in nursery grade, they got a throw in and that's exactly what the teams did - they were only 5 or 6 years old though!

Mariners thrown a lifesaver

Central Coast Mariners are on track to be branded with their fourth wooden spoon in six years after slumping to bottom of the table after their 2-0 loss to Adelaide last week, putting them at a legal risk of having their licence revoked on the grounds of poor performances.Minimum performance measures in A-League participation agreements with FFA suggest a club can be "relegated" for finishing bottom of the table three years in a row, or four times out of six seasons. But A-League boss Greg O'Rourke told The Hairdryer the competition's new management won't be looking to invoke its power to remove the Mariners should they finish last again."We have no intention to use ladder position to determine the licence," he said. "What we are committed to do is work with clubs on the bottom of the ladder to take new initiatives to improve their competitiveness."Former FFA chief David Gallop was not as lenient towards repeated poor performance. When News Corp revealed the clauses last year, Gallop said: "The proper management of any league requires KPIs that assist the continued good performance of the constituent clubs and contribute to the strength of the league as a whole."

It's sort of happened before with what 1-2 years between NSL shutting down, and A League starting up.

But you would think it will be a hibernation type period of as long as it takes, to safely restart the League, rather than it folding.

During that hibernation a very large cost cutting exercise by each club, shedding off contract players, and on contract players having to agree to very large pay cuts.

News/rumours of Fox looking to get out of the remaining 3 years of their contract though is a massive concern. Probably more worrying longer term, than Coronavirus.

Best out come, if no NEW buyer for the licence would be the other 11 Teams buy it.

This would be best for independent league - keeping the FFA influence to a minimum.

Be great to see an A League club in Auckland, but have yet to hear any rumours of a football loving tragic or group with deep pockets willing to try establish one.

Actually would be sad to see CCM fold. Sure they have been battlers for awhile now, but previously gave the A League a lot. Grand Final winners one year, plus a number of Socceroos started their pro careers in Gosford. They effectively also bought Weemac into the AWs, who at his peak was a useful addition. The Sauce Bottles. Mad Matt Simon, bit of a legend of the league.

Most top leagues have battler type clubs, operating on low budgets, often giving youth a chance.

I actually think that this is a big test for the future viability of the league. Are there actual buyers out there who want to take this on? And if not, what does it mean for the league overall? CCM aren't the only club treading water right now.

Frankly why would you buy into the A League at the moment. No naming rights sponsor broadcasting rights a shambles and its any bodies  guess when any body would want to go any where near Victoria.

Charlesworth put out a statement saying he would seek a new investor to buy the club so he could step away from the Mariners.

"After 10 years of involvement with the Mariners, I feel the time is right for me to now step aside and to look for a new investor to take on the ownership of the Club," Charlesworth said in the statement.

"With a host of young, talented players having broken into our first team and with a new independently run A-League around the corner, it's an exciting time for the club to grow and to now move forward under new ownership."

On Tuesday, Mariners CEO Shaun Mielekamp spoke to the media, rejecting reports that the asking price was $4 million.

"I want to smash that, that is a totally false figure and absolutely ridiculous, whoever wrote that, because there's no number [to sell the club] that has been put up," he said.

"An A-League licence is definitely worth more [than $4 million] and the conversations already have been more than that number so I see that as nothing but fake news."

Mielekamp said he was hopeful, but could not guarantee the club would remain on the Central Coast.

"I think it's very personally imperative that it [the future] is here, but of course in a situation where things are, there are no guarantees that the best offer for Mike may be looking a little bit different than the Central Coast," he said.

The chief executive said he was frustrated by Central Coast Council, which has not adopted Charlesworth's vision to own the stadium and develop the waterfront.

"It is frustrating because it was a very important part of the long-term strategy that Mike had seen for our club and a very exciting one as well," Mielekamp said.
