Speaking of wages. At the end of all this with the expected recessions and international economic crisis. Loss of sports revenue due to broadcast losses and lack of sponsorship exposure. Professional sports players are surely going to have to take a big cut in earnings. Going to be interesting to see how that goes down in the sports world. Long overdue for many of the elite that earn far too much, but going to tough on others.

It's going to be a hugely challenging for all pro sports teams (like all businesses) around the world. I see the Warriors have already reached out asking for some Govt assistance.

There are some very sobering numbers in this article about perilous financial state of the NRL.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/120496959/coronavirus-nrl-considering-moving-entire-competition-to-queensland-mining-facility

Haven't heard FFA be quite as alarmist about the A League, maybe because the season was nearing it's end, so they had received most of their TV money from Fox for this season. How are the individual clubs paid their TV money share, evenly over 12 months, or just during the season itself?

Anyway, they are in for a very big drop in revenue. No TV product no TV money. Each club will probably also lose the odd sponsor, as businesses struggle, sponsoring a football team will the first expense to be cut.

So as FFA receive less money from Fox, and the Nix receive less money from FFA, expect some hard decisions for the Welnix owners. They can't be expected to carry the extra funding gap. They already do more than enough. Costs will have to be cut, incl wages.

Sadly some office staff, and background coaching staff will either be let go completely, or have to go on unpaid leave.

All players on one year contracts (expire in May?) will be let go. So that's the youngsters Elliot, Scott, McGing, plus visa players Steinman & Hooper. Will be sad to see Steinman & Hooper go given how this season has gone for the Nix, but Welnix will need to cut their wages bill ASAP simple as that. Hooper's wages are obviously a big ticket item.

One possible alternative could be a short term loan deal, to a Euro club for either the German (Liga 3?) or Englishman (League One?) - as expect Euro leagues to restart before the A League does - but really loan deals will be unlikely. Could already be an over supply of unemployed footballers, so why bother getting someone on loan.

TAHW & McCowatt are also on one year deals that will expire. They could be retained, as imagine they are not on big wages, and are regulars in match day squads. Depends how bad the week to week financial bleeding, will be for the club. If it's real bad, they are gone too. I'm sure Declan could find a team for McCowatt somewhere in Europe.

Expect Cacace to be sold to a Euro club. Not a 'stressed sale', I'm sure Welnix won't give him away (Rob Morrison wouldn't like that), but as with Singh to Bayern it's a relatively easy way to bring in a nice lump sum of cash. Of course any sale, will be dictated on when the leagues in Europe can restart.

Welnix may also consider an offer for Davila. His exploits this season would have been noticed esp in MLS & Mexico. They maybe able to profit on that. A return for him to Indian Super League (ATK?) may even be a possibility. Though without being too morbid/insensitive, India could suffer from Coronavirus like no other country on earth. Who knows Krishna and Williams may end up looking to return down under.

No new signings until start date 2020/2021 A League confirmed. No point playing extra wages, when you have no confirmation of a start date.

Weenix academy. I understand even with the controversial pokie money, the academy is still a substantial outlay for Welnix. Expect some cuts there.

Will be some hard decisions for Welnix owners, not much fun, and sad to see a number of the playing 11 leave, without ever knowing how this season would have finished. But they will need to cut costs, as quickly as possible, simple as that.

It's a constantly changing environment. No-one knows for certain how this is going to pan out, but I'd say the A League has no show of restarting in April. Next month NZ & Australia are going to feel the full wrath of Coronavirus. Playing sport will not be on the agenda for months. If the 2019/2020 season is every completed, then yes it will be as pre season to the 2020/2021 one.

Whenever season 2020/2021 starts it will begin behind closed doors. Until a vaccine becomes widely available, large group gatherings will rightly be banned. There is no other way "to flatten the curve", other than social distancing. Season may even begin with all the teams having to be based in NSW and/or VIC, just so they can get some games to screen. Health of players, staff and general public needs to always be paramount. But without TV product & TV money there is no A League.

Man, I think what you're describing here is close to worst case scenario. A properly observed lockdown with closed borders should clear up the Covid-19 within a few months if the experience in China can be compared. You would expect the border between Australia and New Zealand would be the first to open (interstate travel in Australia would have already been restarted by this point), and as soon as this happens games can continue behind closed doors. These would most likely be the most watched games in the history of the league, providing a massive boost to Fox and I'm sure they know this. The wage requirements would be the same as a normal off-season as the new season could potentially start again in October without any issues - this is 7 months away.

I can't see why we would expect to see any cuts anywhere else at the club as quickly as possible, unless in a months time the lockdown isn't working and things are getting worse, but I prefer to be optimistic. Also its debateable, apart from family reasons, whether players like Hooper and Steinmann would prefer to be here or in their home countries right now, Europe and the UK probably has a lot more work to do to 'flatten the curve' than NZ and Australia. The world isn't going to end and this isn't the NRL with most of the season already having been played (and assumed paid for), re-signing players who are worth re-signing should continue as normal.

Yeah maybe it's a worst case scenario.

But the rushed Fox/FFA plans to try finish the season highlight, there will definitely be a financial hole now. How big, no idea, but doubt there are any cash reserves at FFA HQ. They had already been cutting costs with national teams etc, having lost major sponsors in recent times like Harvey Norman, Caltex, NAB, Aldi etc.

Rumours a few months back that Hyundai were also going to quit this June.

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/soccer/ffa-faces-15m-shortfall-but-experts-say-it-s-not-panic-stations-20200204-p53xrg.html

So that leaves the individual A League clubs to carry the can. It would be a very brave Welnix to try and re-sign Hooper with his high wages, come the end of May if is still no real certainty around the A League.

You are also putting a lot of faith in Coronavirus being 'mild' in NZ. I'm not so optimistic given it's approaching the cooler months, and the poor standard in general of NZ housing. Sadly too many cold and damp shark boxes. Inter generational PI households in South Auckland, are going to be one high risk group for sure. Especially if older members of the family have poor health like diabetes. Some people live in what is effectively a cold carpeted garage. Sincerely hope I'm wrong. Time will tell.

I like your optimism and I hope you are right. But at the least I can see there are going to be some financial losses and tightening of expenses. Domey already said they are looking at applying for government subsidies.

What ever happens, main thing is that the A league carries on at some stage, which I'm sure it will and that the Phoenix are part of it, what ever that takes.

It may be a doom and gloom scenario, but it is probably the more realistic one. All eyes on Fox? And how does the A-league ownership FFA v clubs come  into this - particularly in regard to potential government bailouts?

Every club around the world will have financial problems in one way or another. Maybe some with rich owners will be better off. Some smaller clubs may get bankrupt, will you have a premier league with 12 clubs? The Bundesliga has the 50+1 rule, they are total dependent on TV money as well. Player wages will be consolidated I guess nobody will pay big bucks for Cacae at the moment, everything is on hold and wait.

I don't expect we want the border to Australia opening anytime soon. Have you read about what's (not) happening there? It's a total clusterfudge - an omnishambles. Morrison is a complete dickhead and as useless as a chocolate teapot.

The Phoenix players are immeasurably better off in NZ than in Oz.

As someone else wrote, hairdressers are still open!

After the disgraceful handling of the bushfires I don't think we should have expected anything else.

Read this - "“Listening to the PM like everyone here in Australia and what I understood was, ‘It’s essential, unless it’s not. Then it’s essentially not essential. I can’t be clearer,’” Warne wrote on Twitter.

“Plus people can buy a new shirt at a shopping centre? WTF? PM just had a shocker. Surely (Australia) should be in lockdown now.”

It's a shambles. The state and federal strategies are all over the shop. And never mind hairdressers. I work in a crowded office where the manager has paid lip service to social distancing by having desks 1.5 meters apart but insists on getting all the staff in a big close packed group for 20 minutes for one of his 'inspirational' speeches where everyone is talking and laughing over one another. Then they all pack into the lifts to go downstairs for a smoke!

Will be a miracle if someone in there isn't infected before the government finally grows a pair and applies a full lockdown.

Morrison is getting massively fudged by his big business mates in return for support at election time just like he did during the bushfire crisis. Pretty sure he is on Rupert Murdochs payroll

Yes I hate to be pessimistic but I'm definitely on this side of the fence. I'd be shocked if anything restarted before early Spring and even that might be optimistic.

Would closed door matches be a better financial proposition for the league (or at the very least for Fox who apparently props up the league)? Broadcast advertising revenues would increase dramatically.

There was an article when this all started that out of all the Australian professional codes the A-League is less dependent on ticket sales than others, I'm sure they'll be making more of a loss but hopefully the councils jump in with discounts on venues, etc.

Games wouldn't need to be played at top tier stadiums, you could really play anywhere fenced with a decent pitch, this would certainly save clubs a considerable amount of stadium rental costs too.

It's quite possible this will be the case in NZ as long as social distancing rules are followed as strictly as they were in China, things could be mostly back to normal in NZ in a month or two. Wouldn't expect international borders to properly open up for a few months after though. Australia would naturally be the first country NZ would allow international travel with, but as someone else has mentioned its a bit of a clusterfudge over there right now.

China, but also now improvement in South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

As soon as you can convince me that the Aussies will obey the regulations and restrictions related to lockdown, I will believe this season will still be completed say 6 months from now.

Current players that are off contract at seasons end. I think that's end of May? two months from now there should be a much clearer picture of where this is all going to go and how long it might take. Especially viewing what is happening in China and South Korea.

It's the end of a 8-12 week lockdown.

But it's a lot more than only a 8-12 week problem.  Life has far from returned to normal in China.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/world/asia/120581983/china-further-eases-restrictions-that-kept-millions-at-home-in-coronavirus-epicentre

Maybe not a lot of relevance, given over 100 years ago, we now have modern medicine & vaccines, plus much of the 2nd wave was spread by returning WWI soldiers - but it was that later 2nd wave of Spanish Flu that was far more deadly.

Basically the world will need to remain on some sort of alert for many many months, even years. Certainly until there is a widely available vaccine.

Expect restrictions on travel, and large group gatherings eg football crowds, to remain in place, way after the end of the lock down.

Financially-smashed A-League clubs can expect another huge hit in April, with a TV broadcast rights expert predicting Fox Sports will cancel future payments while the competition is shuttered - and possibly walk away altogether.

A quarterly installment believed to be around $900,000 is due to each of the 11 clubs next month but with the league locked down by the coronavirus, rights holders Fox Sports aren’t expected to sign any cheques for non-existent content.

Colin Smith, head of the consultancy Global Media & Sports, fears the beginning of the end of Fox Sports’ $57.6 million annual commitment to football may be imminent, with the sport unable to deliver on its contractual obligations and now technically in breach after Tuesday’s suspension by FFA.

“In normal circumstances Fox Sports would not want to shoot down football when the A-League is facing its toughest scenario,” said Smith.

You would think the clubs, incl Nix will have to be next to cut costs.

There are no winners with Coronavirus.

The only winner is the positive impact this will all have on the environment.

does anyone else find it extremely hard to get any work done at home?

Nah, I've worked form home off and on for years - I'm way more productive.

So have I and I love it.  Now try with a four year old off kindy :'(  My wife works for an essential service so i've got about 4 hours work done over the past few days!

Edit: Have to add, we are incredibly lucky though, wife has so far kept all her hours and pay, and although my work has reduced, the subsidy will cover most of it.  Very grateful that we are in this position when others are struggling.

It's a perfect storm, even if Fox didn't want to cut the A-League deal they kind of have to just to keep their heads above water, the lost 1.9 billion last year and we all know that their business model is dieing so it's not going to get better.

so why exactly are people hating on Fox so much?

Because it's owned by the dirty digger Murdoch.

Yep, it can only work if you have an area which is separate from your living area or family areas to work.
