With the transfer deadline coming up at the end of the month will we see much movement in the coming days. Unlike other season, still with over half the season to play so will some of the players sitting on the bench for some of the leading teams move to clubs to get more minutes on the park, I am picking one to two what could be considered surprise moves.

Update 22 June. Looks like transfer deadline is going to be pushed back a number of weeks.

Terrible from Selwyn yesterday. I had to walk away. 11-0 shouldnt be happening in any league in the world. Selwyn have got so much going for them through their council. And all they can deliver is this? They need to be relegated ASAP. Whats the bet Selwyn coach is next in line for Cant Dragons coach too. Laughable.

Just overseas people betting and Bet 365 stopped updating at 3-1. People think they can make a quick buck!

Yes Bet365 posted FT at 3 - 1 around 4pm, I had to ring someone at the ground to check that game had not kicked off early.

Vibes coming out from up north that due to lack of money then maybe be no national league(s) this summer.

Agree with your comments regards the $$ around the game. If you resort to playing for $$ in Chch your dreaming, and the clubs who allow this are a disgrace, however the MPL is not a development league. The word academy is applied far too loosely and now if you own a pair of football boots and are under the age of 18 you are in an academy regardless of your ability if you can afford it. Therefore kids have their ego's boosted because they are in academies and because of the poor quality they find them selves up the chain well before their time, hence 11-0 The MPL needs players between 25 to 35 so the younger players can learn off them. Unfortunately Tech has the majority of them, but is that their fault, they have excellent facilities, appear to have a good atmosphere and have created an winning environment. There academy kids will earn their right to get a start more than anyone else if they are patient. There seems a perception that its great to have an MPL team full of young players, young players don't win you anything at MPL level and like I said its not a development league, if they are not up to scratch it ultimately does more damage and they wont be playing the game by the age of 25. which is the the issue we have now. The game has lost its way in NZ and is now dictated by money across all levels. These CUDL leagues are a joke, lopsided results everywhere, the only winners are the FDMs/coaches and clubs who make off them, No child should be paying above $200 to play football, the fees to play in the CUDL leagues are disgusting and in my opinion there is no justification for it People outside of football are shocked to hear about the $$ floating around in football, and what for, just an ego boost. The game needs a reset across all levels. Have gone a bit off topic but it all contributes to results like yesterday. It is just my opinion and plenty will disagree but worth a debate.

I'm just wondering what people's perceptions are of those who govern the game, from NZ Football down? Hundreds of thousands of dollars a year are sunk into salaries and yet the code appears to be going backwards. I see mediocre decision on mediocre decision with no regard for the good of the game. I was a strong supporter of FDM's and player development but never at the expense of social engagement. Has the pendulum swung too far? is there any club in the Mainland Football region actually growing at the moment? Is there any club that is driven to deliver an outstanding experience for a less than average or disadvantaged player?

I've got kids now playing socially as adults who struggle with the concept of paying nearly $300 for 18 games on average grounds. I hear tales of parents paying hundreds of dollars a year to be involved with Academies that would once have been coached by volunteers. How many clubs employ FDM etc with no measurable outcomes while the overall numbers of players appear to be dropping?

Well and truly taught a lesson today but at 10-0 the tech striker was very late on the young centre back. As he was screaming on the floor a guy on the sideline thought it was a great tackle. After questioning his comments he told me that we were bottom of the league and was proud that tech had five players that had come through their academy. Later found out he was a board member, obviously not an accountant. Lost a lot of respect for tech today.

FC69, I had a good view of this tackle in the Selwyn penalty area and I thought it was a 50-50 situation with both players going for the ball, and arriving at the same time. The Tech striker made contact with both the ball and the Selwyn defender (in that order) who, clearly hurt, then went to ground screaming. The referee while not far away was at the wrong angle to get a complete view of the tackle and the assistant referee failed to live up to his adjective. The issuing of a yellow card appeared to me to be based on the volume of the scream. Btw, I am not a Tech board member.

Well seeing as football is still growing and numbers continue to increase across the country, I guess we aren't going backwards? The question has always been "why don't we produce any decent players". Well the reason for that is partly down to underqualified, volunteer/amateur coaching, poor club facilities and admin structures etc. Whilst Coastal and FC have probably gone backwards, the rest of the clubs around Chch have improved massively in these spaces. Tech has over 1500 members and only employs two people! Bays and Selwyn are examples of clubs which are totally incomparable to 10 years ago! So I struggle to see where the game is going backward? Have you been to watch any of the "Licensed Clubs" play in their grades, the games are often more structured and entertaining battles than the MPL! The technical ability is improving across the board and I've been round the game a while. And the move away from Mainland FDO's/FDM's to club based FDO's/FDM's means that there are more qualified, full time staff who can improve the game across the region. How many staff do Mainland now employ? I'm guessing it's way less than 10 years ago. How many clubs employ full time staff to run their programmes and administrate the game? I'm guessing it's way more than 10 years ago. Whilst I agree the cost is increasing and this is unfortunate, is the cost of food/fuel/housing/living increasing? Is minimum/average wage increasing? Yes, and football is no different......

While we are getting away from the MPL discussion...

Is the game growing in CHCH? At all levels of ability? Quick count looks to be 15 teams less than last year in youth and juniors.

Most clubs are running FDO's based on grants which won't be around much longer.

Licenced clubs leagues are generally dominated by a few teams in each grade with others being easy beats that should be in lower levels.

Many top clubs produce a CUDL team with no social teams under them.

Biggest problem is that it is now very expensive to play football at the highest level - talent is no longer enough, parents need $600-$1000 each year to pay academies, which by default means the top leagues are players that can afford to play not the best.

As I said, those two clubs have regressed hugely. They are the weakest represented clubs in CUDL and they have bugger all playing numbers anyway. But the majority of clubs (even those not licensed such as SAS and Parklands) are continuing to grow each year. So again, I don't really see what the argument is here around the game going backwards when the vast majority of clubs are taking big steps forward

I'd love to see the numbers that justify your statement that they continue to increase. The fact that Tech have over 1500 members and only employ 2 staff actually supports the point that volunteers can do this work, just as well as paid employees. Bays are no better off than they were 10 years ago, Selwyn are riding on the back of a post earthquake population explosion supported by migration. I'm not sure why I would need to go to a Licensed Club game when I get better feedback from talking with people who are involved in the game across multiple clubs? It's good that you've been around the game awhile, I never knew that. But it adds little to the conversation, I would respect your opinion anyway. I wasn't looking for an argument, I don't need to be right (or wrong), I get out and about occsasionally and get a sense that we're just going round in circles and people are voting with their feet. In regard to the number of FDO's, FDM's, administrators etc employed in the game I don't see either a cost benefit or an increased level of ability in players that justify the increased cost. I was interested in what other's thought, that's all. Thanks. Good night.

A few milestones occurred in the MPL today.

Cashmere Technical's second goal, scored by Andy Tuckey was their 500th MPL goal, scored in their 161st game, just the fourth club to achieve this feat and now join Bays (238 games), Suburbs (262) and Western (294). Nomads are the next best of the existing MPL clubs on 474

Bays loss to Nomads was their 100th defeat in the MPL.

Nelson Suburbs 4th goal against Selwyn, scored by Jordan Yong, was the 100th goal of the season.

Christchurch United will play there 200th MPL next Saturday, just the sixth team to join the 200 club.

And unless there is something special, probably a winner for goal of the season! ??

Yong's second against Western last Sunday was a bit special as well, totally unstopable.

As stated in an earlier posting it is Christchurch United turn for a milestone on Saturday when playing their 200th in the MPL, joining Ferrymead Bays, Nelson Suburbs, Western, Halswell and Nomads as the only other clubs to reach the 200 game mark.

This is the United's 11th season in the MPL and were one of the 12 foundation clubs in the inaugural MPL season in 2002. They were relegated in 2006 and promoted in 2009. Relegated again in 2012 and back up in 2015 only to be relegated the same season before regaining MPL status this season.

United current stats are:
