I can’t see any way soon that we will have normalcy in the sports world for a long time. Seven PSG players have tested positive for Covid including Mpappe and Neymar. 18 Boca Junior players have tested positive. The EPL kicks off next weekend and the country hit 3000 positives yesterday. New Zealand would be doing great if they managed to just get any sport running properly for the next six months.....forget Trans Tasman. Ain’t gonna happen soon!

I think with Nix playing in Aus that's its a good thing for Welnix as they don't have to pay the high rent cost of SKY Stadium every home game as they only get 5k crowds anyway which don't cover anything. So really there saving money and that's a good thing.

The only down point i see is membership, but with the Nix having the lowest members in the entire league one season without them cant hurt.

So everthing is not that bad.

"Those minutes stated the Welnix ownership group was “unable to contribute any further funding” and that the club was going to run out of cash at the end of May."

"Analysis conducted by KPMG for Sport NZ in May pegged the Phoenix’s pre-Covid annual revenue at $7.6 million and their pre-Covid annual costs at $8.6 million – an annual loss of $1 million.

In a scenario where Covid-19 impacted them for six months – and it’s likely to impact them for a lot longer than that – they were set to lose $3.5 million of revenue and save just $1.3 million of costs, making for a total loss of $3.3 million."

Ouch!

No new player signings (unless they are very cheap) for a few months I'd say. And likely 1 or more requests to break contract and leave. I've always thought of Davila as being high risk to ask for a release now. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Some welcome good news though. Maybe this is where Cacace's transfer fee cash has gone, which would be the right use of this windfall.

"In April, the Phoenix told Sport NZ they would be mothballing their academy until 2021, but it is back up and running, which is a positive sign."

I think the club will survive, but with each day sounds a bit more grim, and the cost cutting (esp what players they sign now) will have to be harsh. Looks increasingly like a group of mostly single, young Aussie/Kiwi guys.

Good informative researched article Andrew. Hopefully Nix don't take this investigative style journalism personally. They shouldn't. If anything they will get more sympathy from the fans, about current shark situation.

Will be really interesting to see if NZF provide any financial help. They owe the Nix. Going way back to AWs qualifying for WC2010, and NZF getting $US10M from FIFA. Without the Nix existing, no way that happens.

Also they want a W League team, and the Phoenix is the gate keeper to that.

If someone is handing our free dosh - you are going to say what it takes to get it. The Academy bounced straight back up after the money was banked.

The Warriors have already announced a plan for next season, when NRL season is likely to kick (March 2021?) after the A League.

Interesting idea to split squad in two up to Christmas, half team training in Australia, other half in NZ.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/league/warriors/1228...

An issue when the players went over this year was that their families couldn't follow them, unless they had Australian connections. Because of this, five players returned to New Zealand.

George can't be certain New Zealand families will be let in this time, but will make the application to the Australian Border Force at the same time as it's made for players and staff.

"We’ve got to work with the authorities on that for sure," he said.

"But all we can do, is do out best to apply for the right reasons, on compassionate grounds.

"It’s not a decision the club makes, all we can do is put forward the best application we can, which we’ll do."

yeah but this is for the NFL, much bigger fan base than football and a well established league with a leader that gets shark done! compare that to the a-league which is currently got no sponsor, no start dates for the upcoming season, no real leadership.

Yeah, I'd be happy if the team and league survive the upcoming season and can return to a growth path next season.

This currently has the A-League season down for 1st January - 30th June, it will probably change again tho

https://resources.fifa.com/image/upload/worldwide-registration-periods-calendar-x6305.pdf?cloudid=lj0gll04fsg2uc94efjl

Interestingly, the mid-season Transfer window is scheduled to start on the 5th of April. The ISL finishes in March, so maybe will be a chance to add some players on loan for a finals push.

... it was interesting that for players under contract such as Taylor, we didn't do the opposite and loan them out to the ISL

Do you really want a visa player to only be available for half a season tho? Jets would have had more leverage in arranging the Donachie loan, he is a AFC +1 so much smaller talent pool to choose from.

In all honesty with people closer to the situation, what is the chance of the aleague actually surviving?  and all the clubs doing so too?

One more year of the TV deal, so the league can stumble its way thru that at least. After that, who knows

Breaking news out of Australia this afternoon:

Path set for next season's league to go ahead.

Clubs and PFA on verge of agreeing to new CBA.

Did we spend all our cap money last season?

"Clubs have been able to sign the core of their players on reduced wages for next season, with the salary cap set to be slashed from $3.2 million per season down to $2.1 million. Clubs that didn't spend the full salary cap for last season will also be given up to $200,000 extra to spend on this season's salary cap if they choose to."

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/soccer/pay-war-set-to...

"The A-League is set to commence without any threat of industrial action with the clubs and players' union on the cusp of signing a new collective bargaining agreement for next season.

The clubs and players have brokered a peace deal that is set to end a bitter months-long pay dispute with a new agreement to be ratified as early as next week. The A-League season is still scheduled to start in December, although that date remains uncertain.

Sources involved in the discussions informed the Herald one of the final obstacles standing in the way of an agreement has been overcome with the clubs agreeing to an annual fee paid directly to the players' union, The PFA.....

If the agreement is ratified, it will ensure all individual A-League player contracts remain valid with many previously at risk of being deemed invalid in the absence of a CBA.

Does this mean we shouldn't expect any more contracted players to be leaving?

And the worst thing is according to your German league standards, he may have been playing german league pub football. Even too young looking to get into the proper pub afterwards

It will be that kind of season. May even have to start looking at Swedish pub football.

Taylor and Hooper probably took a big enough chunk off our wage bill. The report that Ball is staying gives me hope.

Chasing Laws probably means Matti isn't coming back sadly.

Ball's gone on holiday all around the north island which depending on how you take it could mean he's really settling in or wants to see the country before he leaves. Preferably not the latter.

I would expect pre season training will start soon-ish, so he's probably holidaying while he can.

Not sure exacltly what form pre season is going to take this year tho with players split between here and Aus.

Whatever it is, going to court is not ideal. It tends to cost sharkloads, even if you know 100% that you're in the right.

You have to wonder how often that Welnix are prepared to negotiate the obstacles that get put in their way. You really couldnt blame them if at some stage they said FARK IT  we arnt wasting anymore money.

Article makes it sound like they expect a resolution before they go to court. Hope thats the case.
