ugh indeed, but what can we do.....players want contracts and playing time, at the moment the a-league offers neither

Shows just how fickle football is. Payne doesn't take that golf cart ride & Elliot probably ends up back in the Handy Prem this season & no one bats an eye.

This feels like a good move for him, not too high a level that he wont play but is also a team with ambitions for promotion.

Congrats to Elliott, Paul Ifill and Weenix.

Big pity he is off contract, and I presume Nix don’t get a penny.

They clubs will have to come to an arrangement for training compensation cuz of his age, same thing with McCowatt.

was he offered another contract? Or are we just in no position?

Wow, did not see that coming! I mean, he's definitely played well enough to warrant a move anywhere, but for him to go so suddenly...

Hope we get some $$$ out of the training fee. I'd be happy with $0 but like 5% of the future resale price...

Without knowing the status of the league next season we probably weren't in a position.

Gutted to have lost out on him. But right now, I can't blame anyone for leaving. There is absolutely zero security in the a-league at the mo and they'll want to play football. Sharke for us and the club, but I doubt there was much the club could offer currently.

Am I correct in thinking we've got 11 players who have either left or are End of Contract?

Outgoing: Cacace, McCowatt, Taylor, Hooper, Elliot

End of Contract: DeVere, Payne, Steinmann, TAHW, McGing, Rufer

Sotirio signed a contract extension from memory.

Have to be honest- Taylor, Libby and the other guys I can understand. Callan leaving after being the positive at the end of the season... it sucks man.

Feels like not much planning to retain a football club happening.

Payne's contracted for two more seasons. Steinmann, DeVere, TAHW, and McGing are off contract.

However, I'm not sure that we should be putting much faith in guys being under contract. Once players are asked to take pay cuts the current contracts are basically out the window.

Totally - it's more, that's a full rebuild without any other players leaving.

I also imagine you'd have a legal shark fight on your hands, if you didn't consent to release family guys like Ball & Davila, if they sought to break their contracts on 'compassionate grounds'. That's if they A League is set to resume with another hub in Australia.

Basically I think contracts at the moment will mean squat.

Bright side if you are a hungry young domestic Kiwi player, you could well get an opportunity. And as Elliot has just proven who knows where you could end up, if you get given a chance. He spent most of the last season in the Handy Prem.

Outside the big 3, most of the other clubs are likely to be in the same spot as the Nix, poring over talent in the various NPL leagues.

Gonna be a hard sell to recruit from the NPL. "Hey, wanna give up your 40 hour job and NPL match fees to come play for a below minimum wage contract, guaranteed for only one year"

Probably depends what that 40 hour job is, and your motivation. Plenty of shark boring regular jobs out there, that as a 21 year old you may not be that enthusiastic about looking ahead as a career for the next 40 odd years. Plenty.

Just treat a 1 year gig in the A League a bit like an OE (which most often means earning little or no money). Bit of an adventure, an escape from normal working life, and who knows what may happen. Never die wondering that way.

Maybe it will be like Rueben Way (remember him?) and within a few months it's back to Melbourne writing dull home loans as a mortgage broker. Or maybe it's like that young French guy who's gone from backpacking, working on a Sydney construction site, to trialling at Newcastle United.

Well, look at it. The whole idea of this season was that it was rebuilding. It worked better than expected for a long while. But it's all come to nothing in the end. We're going to be back to square 1 again, just like we were last season - assuming the next season even happens.

If you don't think Ufuk is going anywhere, I would have told you straight up 1 month ago that the captain wasn't going anywhere, and look what happened.

So Krishan rejected Nix for next season because they where lowballing him a offer.

clubs are cutting player’s salaries. We had to take all this into consideration before making a decision.

If the club's crashing and, if there is a next season, we have to rebuild from scratch again, it doesn't matter why it happened, does it? Especially when other clubs seem to be able to resign their squad, on whatever deals, but not, for some reason, us.

Not sure i understand the angst there has been no decision about when the next season will start so far we have lost Taylor who was signed for next season. If you dont understand his reasons then no point trying i guess. Libby moved on completely as expected by most both Elliott and Hooper both off contract and the club has announced some renewed partnerships. If and when the A League announce a planned season  and the Phoenix then fail to announce signings that may be the time to panic. How people expect the club to attract new signings at the moment frankly beggars beleif.

Yipe way too early to worry about any Nix signings, or lack of yet. I'd be more focused on any Govt financial support announcements, or news from FFA/NLWG what next A League season is likely to look like. Club survival needs to be the focus for the moment.

I guess players will return to pre season training in October, when some NZ domestic based players will be invited in for trials.

Early days but already looks like MVC, SFC & MC will be operating on a different financial plain to the other clubs. Salary cap rorting will be in overdrive. Victory were always likely to quickly bounce back from such a poor season just finished. Though if crowds are not possible in the new season that will hurt them, more than most.

When club's squads have all been sorted, you need to be comparing the Nix against likes of CCM, Newcastle, WU etc - not the big 3.

Keep an eye on Perth, they've lost new signings and have stood everyone down again. AFAIK we've only had two signed players leave and one of them we sold.  A club also put in an offer for Ball that we rejected.

Most other clubs don't have the uncertainty that we have around borders and face the prospect of going through quarantine (again) and potentially living in a bubble for a whole season. If I was a player here and I faced the uncertainty of where I would live, what I'd be paid, and even if I could play... Well, I'd go where there's certainty.

The raison d'etre of the Nix is to produce success results-wise and to develop local players, so if they have to cut their cloth to fit in tight financial times and sign more Kiwi players, that is a positive from the player development point of view.

As you say, most other A-League clubs won't be rolling in money either and will be spending less on players and recruiting fewer foreigners (or cheaper foreigners).

News out of the UK is that several clubs are struggling financially or on the point of bankruptcy, so there are likely to be plenty of decent players of the required standard available who will be happy to earn a living playing in the A-League.

My club Charlton was on the point of going bust before an enthusiastic genuine Danish-American football fan with money bought them yesterday:

"With the club about to run out of funds this month, it was important that I moved quickly to complete the acquisition and put funds in to the club to ensure its survival."

Charlton's situation meant they were under an EFL ban from signing players.

Not sure about "plenty of decent players" from UK lower leagues being available, or keen to come downunder to a league with $1.2M shaved off each club's wage bill. But yes could well be a few young, hungry players at a loose end, happy to sign for one season. What have they to lose if not having a club in the UK, by say December.

According to BBC news today UK time Boris and Co are about to do something to stop the football league collapsing. Could mean it will be harder to get UK based players, kiwi or otherwise for the Nix.

I read talk too that the Premier League clubs are considering donating a few hundred million pounds but it has got bogged down in disagreements....

Only government help announced so far was the money for National League (fifth tier non-league) clubs announced yesterday.

The government seem to want the Premier League to help the EFL financially before the government contributes:

https://www.espn.com/soccer/english-premier-league...

https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2020/sep...

But are Premier League clubs arsed?

"...the Burnley manager, Sean Dyche...took a dim view of Premier League clubs being pressured into bailing out their poorer counterparts. “Does that mean every hedge fund manager who is incredibly successful does that to the hedge fund managers who are not so successful?” he sniffed. “Do the restaurants who are surviving look after the ones who are not? If you are going to apply it to football, you have to apply it to everyone and every business.” (Congratulations, Sean: you’ve just invented social democracy!)

At its heart, Dychonomics is underpinned by a heartbreaking, devastatingly cynical and yet largely accurate idea of the modern football club, which is essentially an animal of the market: one that sees not a pyramid but a jungle of predators and prey

As much as I love football, with the state of the UK economy I can't see how they can justify spending anything to help sport. Everything they have should go to fighting covid and keeping their heads above water.

This

As a football fan too, l can’t really see how anyone can justify Govt money going to professional sport. Chelsea has just spent 200million euros+ in the latest transfer market. There are millions of people who have lost their livelihoods because of Covid19. Lots of small family business’s have gone to the wall.

Their appears to be no football brotherhood in the UK. It’s all dog eat dog market forces. If the EPL clubs don’t care if smaller clubs go under then it would be a hard sell for Boris to use taxpayer money to support them. The fact is the EPL clubs have no reason to support the lower clubs. They don’t really need these clubs as talent nurseries. They can just as easily buy players from abroad. I guess this confirms what we already knew about modern football....it’s all about $$$

The predicted introduction of transfer fees between A-League clubs is going to shake things up next year.

Longer-term contracts on the horizon for A-League players, plus more revenue for clubs from both local transfers and selling players overseas:

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/soccer/ffa-targeting-...

"One of the primary items on a white paper to be released next month will be the introduction of a domestic transfer system – a first in the A-League era – that will allow clubs to buy and sell players like the rest of world football. The document will also cover training compensation fees, transfer fees, agent accreditation and regulations, the timing of transfer windows within the season and the alignment of the A-League with the winter-run state leagues.

The proposals and consultation process are aimed at achieving two targets; creating an internal domestic transfer economy and increasing Australia's international transfer revenue at least 15-fold.....

....The A-League's aim of matching Japan's transfer revenue could see clubs rake in more than $40m a year.

FFA's plan to bridge the gap between Australia and Japan hinges on improving the quality of the A-League, providing more match minutes to young Australian players, encouraging longer periods of contracting and potentially realigning the schedule of the A-League season and transfer windows with the state-based National Premier Leagues.

The governing body could flag a reduction in foreign player quotas to four per team to encourage local player development, as well as incentives around home-grown players and allowing Australian clubs to buy and sell players with one another. The latter is hoped to lead to longer-term contracting that will increase player value on the global transfer market. Currently, a third of A-League players enter the July-August transfer window as free agents in any given year."
