Announced by Mainland Football: Eddie Ashton, Simon Chretien, Sam Field, George King, Danny Knight, Cory Mitchell, Tom Schwarz, Luke Tongue

Announced by Olé Football Academy: Ihaia Delaney

Attended NZ Football's season launch event last Thursday (and later announced by Mainland Football): Ben Stroud

Known to have played in Saturday's friendly: Garbhan Coughlan, Stephen Last, Danny Ledwith

The following six players named as 'signed' via Canterbury United facebook page in recent days: Seth Clark, Garbhan Coughlan, Ihaia Delaney. Lyle Matthysen, Max Chretien and Jacob Richards

Three more squad members announced today via the Canterbury United's facebook page:

Dan Terris, Caleb Cottom and John Oatman

Feels like we are watching paint dry this is killing me....

Mainland Football seem to do everything at a glacial pace when it comes to both the Dragons and Pride.

They sent out an email at 9.52 am this morning to everyone on their "No.1 Fan" supporters mailing list with the incorrect heading:

"Pride v Auckland at English Park - 4pm Sat 7 Nov"

Kick-off is still actually at 1 pm as promoted everywhere else.

I contacted Mainland Football about 10 am and they replied that they were aware of the mistake.

However it is now 4.10 pm and they still haven't followed up with an email to the mailing list correcting the mistake.

Looks like a lot of people will now be turning up at English Park at 4 pm tomorrow.

There's been an error in almost all of their post and newsletters this year, with logos, times, teams etc.

I didn't get that email this morning, so I looked on the MF website, the one on the newsletter page says Happy New Year 2020, and the link from the newsletter logo takes you to a 2017 one.

Lol.

Full squad finally put up on their Facebook yesterday:

https://www.facebook.com/CanterburyUnited/posts/10...

To me,the Dragons look significantly stronger this season.

Aaron of course is gone but he wasn't up to his usual standards last summer anyway.

There's a lot more goals in them with several new attacking signings.

Four of the squad scored 50 goals between them in the Mainland Premier League this winter (Matthysen 19, Coughlan 12, Taguchi 10, Max Chretien 9) Plus you have Tom Schwarz (6), George King (5) and Seth Clark (4)

I think they will be at least as good as Hamilton, HB and Waitak. and amongst that mid-table mix.

Weenix will struggle due to having no senior Phoenix players available this summer due to being based over in NSW.

New Canterbury signings include three Irishmen from Southern:

Ace goalscorer Garbhan Coughlan, left-back Danny Ledwith and centre-back Stephen Last.

Skilful nippy young winger Seth Clark returns after a spell away at US college last summer.

Young South African-born Lyle Matthysen is a talented winger who has been very good for Cashmere Tech for a few years but has not got the breaks at national league level, exiting early last summer due to injury and not getting on with previous management (hence leaving for a season with Tasman). Was top goal-scorer in the Mainland Premier with 19 goals this winter.

Striker Ihaia Delaney returns to Christchurch where he was born from Hawkes Bay United after a childhood in Brunei, South East Asia then Ole Academy in Wellington etc.

Yuya Taguchi, a 19 year-old professional Japanese striker from the J 3 league (third tier) has been Cashmere Technical's third highest scorer this season with ten goals.

23 appearances, 7 goals in the J 3 league last season.

Yuya's stats: https://www.transfermarkt.com/yuya-taguchi/leistun...

Different Yuya Taguchi, unfortunately for Canty. Other one would have been a pull. This one's 23 and came straight from a Japanese university side, was still great for Cashmere apparently

Oh, I see.

Problem when googling his name was that Cashmere Tech (early on) and some other Kiwi sites had his name wrong as "Yuka" Taguchi.

Season tickets ("Club Card") are very good value this season at $50 for all seven Dragons and all three Pride home games.

Got mine last week at the Pride game at English Park.

Can pay by cash or Eftpos as you go in at the ticket desk.

Gives you some discounts at local retailers too.

Gonna be a long season for the Dragons!

Not organised, players look disinterested and failed to even get a shot on target all game.

At least we have the new NZF league structure to look forward to and for Padmore to go back to being a CCL coach.

Had to feel for Aaron Clapham having to commentate on that. Kept saying "we" but they needed his flair out there.

Got to agree totally unstructured play.  Waitak basically walked their goals in.  So disappointing looked worse than last year.

You can’t go saying anything negative about Lord Padmore on here as his followers will come at you. Simply awful from Canterbury today and it will get covered with the coach saying waitakere will be one of the stronger teams this season. Coughlan and Last look like decent signings Delaney looks another Callum Ferguson unfortunately but time shall tell.

I’d like to know what padmores boss - padmore himself - has to say about today’s performance

Yup, it's going to be a long season. Did we get a shot on target I'm trying to remember??? We had a couple of corners but I think that's about it.

Still good to see live summer football with (apparently) the best players in the country. Thought the attendance wasn't that great either. Is that because of at Satdy 2pm rather than a Sunday?

Padmores comments in program notes definitely was not on show yesterday.

Schwarz looked well off pace

Felt sorry for Knight

Nothing going forward

Long season ahead probably should have taken decision Tasman and Southern took

Saw the 2nd half on a stream. Tough watch. Playing Liddicoat and Lyle as wingbacks, you need 3 really competent defenders. Schwarz didn't have enough support there. Offensively the only threat seemed to be when Tagguchi came on. Claps was struggling to find any positives in the com box.

I watched the TV game last week and Canterbury played like utter dogshark. Even a half decent striker would have slotted 3, with the stuff all possession that they did not kick away. Time and time again, I saw Schwarz launch a 60y aerial ball to the oppostie centre back. For what?
Lee Padmore (and I am out of the region) strikes me as a poor coach

I am in the region and i have similar thoughts. He has a good reputation with coaching kids but is being found out at the senior level very quickly. Coughlan has been raved about locally but those wasted chances were very poor

Saying that a win this weekend followed by a few in a row and it can all change!!!

From this weeks programme notes - "we have had another great week in training and i fully believe the players that take the pitch to represent the region are more than capable of getting the result". The same thing has been said about training every single week since he arrived and there has been very few positive results to match these great weeks in training. There is zero chance of Lee being sacked as he would have to sack himself and his own ego would never let him resign. This was always the issue with letting him come and basically  run mainland

It's a bit harsh comparing Lee Padmore's reign with any of the past Dragon's coaches. He has to rely on local players whereas his predocessers have had a budget for imports. As a local fan I'd rather see them try to develop local talent than import mediocre players and finish mid table as they often did in previous seasons. I see Eastern Suburbs beat the Phoenix reserves 4 nil today but I don't expect that people will be calling for the WP coach to resign.

Am sure Canterbury had enough imports last season and added the Japanese lad and 2 Irish lads this season while am sure the local players are not all playing for nothing.

The league as a whole financially has dropped with clubs developing youth players through more necessity.

My point was that the teams win and loss stats since Padmore took charge must be poor.

I don’t believe it’s being harsh at all. I highly doubt last seasons star recruits came here for nothing and once they were found to be awful, two thirds through the season, did they finally move on. I’m sorry but he’s out of his depth coaching at this level and even proved to be poor at mpl standard. I see he said on sky sports they worked on finishing this week, maybe get the best attacking local players involved in the correct positions

I  question the selection process of players far too many under par, there are better quality players overlooked, For the amount of money thrown at them they need to be performing at a National League standard, it’s an embarrassment, what can we do... Is this selection process just a call up and asking whos available from previous year or is there a robus scouting process including coach to find the best players within the south island.
