I have been unable to find any forum or thread on YF for coaches to discuss things like training plans, techniques, how their education is progressing, so thought I'd start one in here.

If your coaching a team youth or adult this season, say hello and keep us updated on new things you might have learnt lately etc.

I'm doing my first season coaching a Combined U13 team this year and am loving it. So many kids have potential to play at a good level when they reach senior level, and I'm learning from the 3C coach Juan, who's a coaching genius

Sounds like not much coaching goes on then.

As its (quite) a few years since I played at the 'top level' , Id be fascinated to know what instructions are given to players these days.

Or is it still the old "lets get stuck in, keep possession and test out the keeper with long shots" talk at half time?

Lets hear from the current players, what useful info does your coach impart?

Hmm, distinctly underwhelmed with responses.

What does the manager say?
What do you know about your role and position in the team?
Is there any point having a manager, apart from picking the team?

Remembering back to a half time talk at Wharfies a few years ago, it always used to go like this:

"NVH - shut the hell up for a minute.  Greenie - stop getting wound up by the fullback.  You already have a yellow card for pushing him over after he looked at you, so I don't want you to get sent off.  NVH - shut the hell up for a minute.  Harry Potter - stop being so scared of the ball/opponent/rain.  NICK - SHUT THE f**k UP FOR A SECOND!  Betters - try to make a tackle at some stage.  I know you want to preserve your 'never been booked, never conceeded a free kick and never scored a goal' record, but we need you to be a bit more aggressive.  AARRRGGGHHHH - Nick, go and sit on the naughty step for 3 minutes."

Then it would just desend into everyone giving Greenie grief for never passing and spending most of the game so far out of position he was on an adjoining pitch.

Back in my day, we once trained in the middle of a tornado, and it was snowing.  And training went on for 6 hours.......and it was all shuttle runs.  And everything was in black and white.

This is the same Jonesy who didn't attend a single training all season at the Poly

Actually thats not true, we went to one pre-season training together, got lost and half way there Jonesy suggested we bail out and go to the pub.  We made it in the end for about 45 minutes of running, and then went to the pub.

THE "Orange-ification" of Australian soccer continued yesterday when Football Federation Australia mandated that its junior development teams will play the 4-3-3 tactical system refined by the great Dutch sides of the 1970s' "Total Football" era and the conquering Ajax Amsterdam team of the mid 1990s.

FFA yesterday unveiled its "national football curriculum" which, says chief executive Ben Buckley, is aimed at "improving the skill level, quality and performance of Australia's top players and teams".

The most eye-catching feature of the reform one which will be regarded as a legacy of the significant number of Dutch coaches now in key roles in Australian soccer development is the insistence that all FFA-supported development teams (the Joeys, the Young Matildas, national junior sides) play in the one tactical system, with a flat back four, three midfielders and three attackers, two of them wingers.

Most Dutch clubs play with a nominal 4-3-3, although as in all sports, teams and players have to be reactive and flexible and able to adapt to varying circumstances.

The tactical approach has been seeded through the Dutch game for generations. As national team coach Pim Verbeek, assistant Henk Duut, former FFA technical director Rob Baan and his successor Han Berger, as well as national under-17 and under-20 coach Jan Versleijen all come from the Netherlands, this style will be familiar.

In contrast most English Premiership sides such as Manchester United play a more traditional 4-4-2, with a back four, two wide midfielders, two central midfielders and two up front.

Work on the blueprint for an Australian "national style" was begun by Baan, a former technical director at top Dutch club Feyenoord and briefly a caretaker coach of the Dutch national team. It was completed by Berger, who took over in January when Baan quit.

"The new national curriculum recognises two streams of development. The first is for talented players who aim to play the highest level possible, and the second is for community players who just want to play the game and enjoy the sport," Berger said yesterday.

As part of the blueprint, each state or territory will be required to appoint a technical director, funded under FFA's new Member Federation Charter, with the state technical director reporting to the national technical director.

Other measures include:

?Coach education programs will be reviewed to reflect the new curriculum.

?Specific levels of coaching qualification will be required for all higher level coaching positions (national team, A-League, W-League, National Youth League, and for institute and state technical director positions).

?By 2010 each state/territory will need to appoint at least one "skill acquisition trainer" whose role will be to ensure that skill development programs for talented players are universally implemented.

?Clubs, schools and academies will be accredited and rated.

Anyone remember Paul Smalley?  He issued this same edict here in New Zealand five or six or more years ago, and was pilloried for it.

God I loathe 4-3-3

Maybe its the way its played, but in England during the 70's and early 80's it was the epitome of straight up and down boredom.   Maybe if you call it 4-5-1,  I can relate to it more.

Ever since we started calling teams 4-4-2, the whole shape of the game improved for me.

Mind you, judging by the deafening silence on coaching knowledge on this forum, maybe people have no idea what shape they are trying to play!

It's hard to give the writer a lot of credibility when he makes this statement which is almost entirely incorrect in every single aspect respect.

Quite.  United at times this year have played with not one out and out striker, instead rolling players forward in and out of midfield.  4-4-2 almost never.

And tell me who in the United side are the "wide midfielders"?

If United do nominally line up in 4-4-2, it could hardly be described as "traditional".  Anyway, it's just rubbish as is the contention that most Premiership sides play 4-4-2.

I do find the strict adherence to 4-3-3 in this new aussie system a little odd.  Surely it's not about the formation but how you play it that matters?  Formations are inherently neutral, it is how they are applied that matter and make them attacking or defensive.

Smithy, I think you should get Adam create a coaching forum if poss (as the original starter of this topic suggested), would be interesting to hear some views.

Some interesting articles on the Guardian site by Jonathan Wilson recently on various tactical innovations.  This one on attacking fullbacks I liked...
