I'm about to apply for tickets but will only bother if NZ are involved.

I have no idea what the qualification process is for this, can anyone help me out?

Not quite sure about the qualification process but pretty sure Oceania gets 1 full spot, so you would hope we would be able to get there

looking at the OFC qualification for the Beijing olympics it was a week long tournament, each team playing each other team once, team with the most points qualifies.
Countries were;
NZ
Vanuatu
Fiji
Soloman Islands
Cook Islands
PNG

Cheers, seems likely they will be there then.

Now I've just got to hope they are playing in the capital and not up north somewhere. This process really is a ridiculous lottery.

Not necessarily , it also depends on the whether the NZOC let them go, athletes and teams are supposed to meet a criteria I believe of being in the top 16 in the world. Though in saying that they did let us go to Beijing.

You couldnt rank U23s football though, there isnt nearly enough football to be able to do that. Although you wouldnt think we would come close

well, 16 teams qualify for football at the olympics, so if you want to look at it like that, by winning oceania qualifying tournament we are in the top 16

The OFC Mens Olympic Football Tournament Qualifier will take place in Lautoka, Fiji, from 12 27 March 2012, with the following teams participating: American Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu. The winner of this tournament will qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
I see Tahiti has withdrawn from the Olympic Qualifiers as well as the U20's WC Qualifiers - I smell a rat (Reynald Temarii). Amazing Now Termarii has gone Tahiti has no funds.

Players will be All White for Olympic qualifiers

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=10737548/

"NZF plan to hold a camp in Taupo next month when two north-south games will also be played. They will ask for regions to nominate players to ensure players they don't currently know much about aren't missed. They are also undertaking another worldwide fishing expedition to see if they can catch New Zealand-eligible players they don't presently know about."

I read link to newspaper website of important information, I see this comment... "We will look to fill them all," NZF chief executive Grant McKavanagh said. "Asia is one possibility but we will look at Australia to see if we can get some good quality games with them. It's the lowest-cost option but we also know it's good quality. We would probably call the team New Zealand A and would like to see at least one of those games in New Zealand."

My home, Spain, does not issue "A" team, we are not poorly dubbed 1980's show of TV with man of shaved head. T Mister I recall. I note in my travels, I see Zelanda in Adelaide on TV with Australia. I ask, will Australia want to play your country again, even with junior strength team of youth players?

Can not see point of this trial.

agree - since when has a trial match unearthed a player at u23 leve?  a series of training camps for local contenders would be more suitable

It wasnt so much a pop shot at the selection along the lines of players x, y and z are missing, more an observation of the clubs the players were from the north island...

And this was exactly the point I was trying to make.  If you aren't aware of anyone who should be there that isn't, then it's not really relevant where the players are from is it?

Unless you think we should include some South Island residents as some sort of sympathy vote?

The reality is that most good players in the country are in Auckland, where most of the people are.

What about the overseas based players? That is a decent group of footballers but there must be just as many playing overseas which means 90% of those listed won't make the cut.

fair point smithy, but...

if we count myers as an aucklander, that leaves two south islanders, both from mike mcgarry's club

just makes you wonder

Fair play, it is expected for Auckland to provide the majority of trialists, however,
I'm not going to piss around figuring out who fits the age criteria but there are bound to be a few otago & canty players from nzfc/nyl who arent there. I count 11 players who arent playing at that level in the attached list. Furthermore,  we have kiwis in the aussie state leagues who must surely be closer to the u/23 squad then those listed (I wont even mention the ones playing college 'soccer' in the states on the assumption NZF will be looking at them seperately).

I'd hope that anyone playing in the top leagues in Australia wouldn't be required to attend Taupo for a trial.  They can be scouted individually or invited directly into a training camp.

Hopefully any players who have been overlooked will make a phone call and ask why.  Or their coaches will do that for them.

Heard today, from what I regard as a very good source, that NZF are considering running a trial in the US to identify Olympians. Apparently there are 150 eligible players playing in the US.

I'd believe that, the kids listed in the college thread are the tip of the iceberg, plenty more playing at lower level colleges. Although I'd expect that 150 to include the females too

Assuming we make it through qualifying, this team looks exciting with forwards wood, rojas and Kosta. As we can take three over aged players and assuming one would be a fit Nelson, who would be the other two?
