First real foray into coaching...

Any suggestions on where to start and any courses offered in Wellington?

Played for 30 odd years and now the hamstrings won't hold up anymore and would like to get involved on the sideline coaching/managing.

I coached the Onslow College Women's team in 1996 when playing for the First XI men's team but that's the extent of my coaching experience other than offering insight as a captain or at my own team practices.

Any help would be appreciated

best to start here

Courses offered for junior, youth, and senior. All level 1s are pretty introductory and assume no/limited prior knowledge.

If coaching 5 year olds make sure they all go to the toilet before you start.

I've coached 6, 7 and 8 year olds for cricket before so well versed in that. Nothing worse than yellow 'whites'

Luckily never had that one. Training and pre/post game warm-ups were set down as:

  • Team Chat
  • Light run & stretch
  • Toilet Break
  • Catching
  • Toilet Break
  • Finding lost gear
  • Toilet Break
  • Finding lost children
  • Toilet Break
  • Game
  • Telling off aggressive parents
  • Filling kids with raspberry fizzy
  • Pass back to afore mentioned parents

It's easier with women though. Tell one and the whole lot go together...

As long as you yell a lot and stick to 4-4-2 you will be just fine. Remember, coaching kids is about results, not this namby pamby PCC rubbish spouted by the federations. Never change a winning team, and make sure to keep the slow kids on the bench until they lift their game or give up entirely.

And loads of awesome shuttles if they lose a game.

It was 18 years ago! Not sure how they'd feel about a random 35 year old bloke with a dodgy beard rolling up and asking if he could look after the girls team.
