A thought has occurred to me.

The WC is being played in December and not June because it is too hot in June at that part of the World

Yet they are playing all the qualifying play off games there in June.  Surely it will be too hot?

Big difference between one game in the air conditioned stadiums vs an entire group stage, knockouts and training in the open. But yeah, the heat will probably still be pretty rough

It will likely be mid 30s to 40 degrees Celsius day time. Even walking around in that will be very unpleasant. “Low” of about 30 at night

Presumably all trainings and games will be in air conditioned stadia.

Any update on the June friendly? Nothing official over here in Canada, but in Iran it is being reported that they are coming here to play Canada and then will play Albania in Canada (?!) before heading to Qatar to face the All Whites. Canada has the #%*&ing Nations League, so we can really only fit the one friendly in the June window, but I would be quite happy facing Iran, they should be a tough test.

No update from NZ Football. Similar to the Canadian FA, they likely only make announcements when everything is 100% signed off.

And yipe as you say, Iranian media seem confident, they will play 2 games in Canada, then NZ in Qatar.

Good tough opponent for Canucks & All Whites.

And yeah having to play two CONCACAF Nations League games (Panama & Martinque) just prior the big Playoff, maybe a negative for the Costa Ricans??

Would they have preferred a warmup game or two in Europe/Qatar against a non CONCACAF team? Read somewhere that due to Covid they haven't played a team outside your Confed in a very long time. Small edge NZ perhaps. Though I guess the Ticos play likes of USA & Canada enough to get a feel for a 'non Latino' side??

https://www.tehrantimes.com/news/472453/Iran-likely-to-play-Albania-in-pre-World-Cup-friendly

TEHRAN – Iran football team will likely play Albania in a friendly ahead of this year's World Cup, the football federation’s secretary general Hassan Kamranifar said.

Iran will travel to Canada next month to hold their training camp.

“We will play Canada in Toronto and also want to play Albania. The latter has not been confirmed yet. Given the long-distance trip, the Iranian team would rather play more than one team,” Kamranifar said.

Iran and Canada both qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Iran are pitted against England, the U.S. and one of Ukraine, Scotland or Wales in Group B.

Canada are in Group F along with Belgium, Croatia, and Morocco.

Iran will also play a friendly with New Zealand in Doha, Qatar in June.

I would rather not have to play the Nations League matches, but at least Canada goes away to Honduras. That will be a tough match. I would think Costa Rica is feeling the same. Martinique are usually competitive (as are our other opponents Curacao), but that away match to Panama will be a good test for them. It's probably not the style of opponent they would prefer to play, but at least Panama has some size and physicality. Better them than El Salvador or Honduras.

Because qualifying was so recent, I think there is still a lot of animosity that is going to carry over into June. I was watching Club Brugge-Anderlecht and Canada's Buchanan and Panama's Murillo were absolutely going to war with each other with running a dialogue on top. So I think Panama will definitely be out for revenge against the Ticos and will get the intensity up ahead of the playoff. Then Costa Rica can rotate the squad a little against Martinique and be fresh for Qatar.

I don't know when Costa Rica last played a non-CONCACAF side, but Canada played a B international against Iceland in January 2020 and outside of that it was the New Zealand friendly in Spain. Most of the CONCACAF sides have all been playing each other a lot these past two years.

cheers,

Oh well hopefully any of Navas, Borges, Campbell, Ruiz or whoever can taken out by a begrudged Panamanian.

Fine line but it wouldn't hurt if the Peru-AWs friendly in front of 40,000 Peruvian expats had a bit of niggle & feeling about it. Them beating us in 2017. Handy simulation for later in June, after a long time AWs playing sans crowds.

By the sounds of it whatever opponent for the  friendly NZ had planned to line up against  between the Peru and Costa Rica didn't work out due to NZ not wanting to play any later than the 9th and the opposition preferring preferring play on the 10th. Would make sense if that was Iran seeing as they're lining up against Armenia and then Canada on the 6th in Canada. That's a very short turnaround to come back and play NZ on the otherside of the world within 72 hours. So the question is who is left of the sort of top 60 Fifa ranked nations  around and available to come to Qatar for a game on the 10th?

The game is supposedly meant to be behind closed doors, so I don’t think any fans would be allowed in. In that case it probably doesn’t even need to be a national side, it’ll be a glorified training run so could just play a local club team, similar to how we played Chivas USA in 2013 and NPLQLD teams in 2016.

Sounds like it will also be a game mostly for the bench players, who may not get many mins against Peru.

You could play the 2nd string Socceroos or UAE if they had the same desire to give their bench players a run, presuming they win their game to face Peru

UAE sort of makes some sense as they could fly in extras for a game easily and quickly. Could end being a non international like Algeria A was

2nd warmup is Oman! FIFA ranking 75, actually bet Japan, 1-0 in Nippon AFC qualifying last year. Finished 4th in that pool after Saudi, Japan & Australia - only 1 point behind the Socceroos.

So no mugs, and it sounds like Hay will run mostly a 2nd XI against them, behind locked doors. AWs were due to play them March 2020, but Covid ruined that.

New Zealand Football have today confirmed Oman as the second warm-up international friendly the men’s national team will play ahead of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Intercontinental Play-Off against Costa Rica.

The All Whites will face the Middle Eastern side on 9 June (10 June NZT) in Doha, Qatar. As previously announced, the game will be played behind closed doors and
will not be broadcast live.

The match follows the
first warm-up game against Peru on 5 June (6 June NZT) at RCDE Stadium in Barcelona, Spain. The game will be the first the team have played in front of a crowd since 2019, with 25,000 tickets already sold.

“We are really pleased to lock in this match against another high-quality opposition ahead of a massive game against Costa Rica” says Head Coach Danny Hay from the team training camp in Marbella, Spain.

“It is vital that we challenge ourselves ahead of the Intercontinental Play-Off but also have the opportunity to try things out. These two games, against Peru and Oman, should allow us to do both.

“Having the opportunity to give minutes to members of the wider squad is really important as you never know what can happen during a game. We need the entire squad match fit, battle hardened and pushing to make the starting XI against Costa Rica.”

Kick off time and venue for the game will be announced over the coming days.

Confirmed fixtures:

New Zealand v Peru – International Friendly
Sunday 5 June 2022 - 5:30pm (local)
Barcelona, Spain

New Zealand v Oman – International Friendly (behind closed doors)
Thursday 9 June 2022 - Time TBC (local)
Doha, Qatar

New Zealand v Costa Rica – FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Intercontinental Play-Off
Tuesday 14 June 2022 – 9pm (local)
Doha, Qatar

Who knows what the thinking is with behind closed doors friendlies. Again sounds like it will be mostly the backup players getting a run. But do the coaching staff plan to give some of the starting 11 a run in the 2nd half and trial some secretive set piece moves, or something?

Coach Schmid in his first AWs game had a closed door game against Canada way way back in 2018. Why closed doors then seemed strange, unless it was all about saving costs, ie the staging costs go up if you open the gates and then need local security staff etc. I guess that could be the main reason, some sort of cost saving exercise.

I'm picking it'll be the "we don't want anyone to see us" type thing before the big game - but hopefully they have someone filming, perhaps to make it available on the NZF YouTube channel at a later time?  like they did with the Gambia match? Here's hoping.

Info I found online suggests the Oman friendly will be a night game at Education City Stadium, another World cup venue which hosted the final and a semi-final of the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup. Capacity 45,350
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_City_Stadium
Not far from the play-off venue vs. Costa Rica, in the same municpality, Al-Rayyan which borders Doha, the capital.
Education City Stadium is in Al-Rayyan City itself, the seond-largest urban area in Qatar after Doha.

So assembling the AWs (as likely is the Football Ferns) is expensive, so if AWs fail to make Qatar and the FIFA windfall that comes with that - expect 2023-2024 to be the typical little/nil AWs activity period of next cycle.

But yeah couple Socceroos friendlies in Sept would be great.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/128752694/nz-football-faces-rising-costs-with-all-whites-as-confirmation-of-home-fixture-nears

At stake is a place at the World Cup for the third time in the team’s 100-year history and a US$10.5 million [NZ$16.2 million] payday.

Around 40% of the prize money would go to the players, and some would also be lost to taxes, but it would still be a significant windfall for an organisation that this week reported $16.5m of revenue in 2021.

NZ Football chief executive Andrew Pragnell confirmed the total cost of the current All Whites camp was set to be upward of $400,000, but said it was “not an extravagant expense,” because “that’s where the windows are heading in terms of overall costs”.

The strong position Pragnell refers to was laid out in NZ Football’s latest annual report, published on Friday, which showed it had reserves of $11.4 million after recording a surplus of $2.7 million in 2021.

For the second year in a row, the strong return was largely down to a lack of international activity as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic – especially in the first half of the year.

“I'd love to announce something next week. There are a few dominoes that have to fall, but that's getting pretty exciting and that's a really big deal.”

We are all but guaranteed a WC spot under the new format which starts after this cycle. I don't see us going back to the bare bones.

You are probably right, but some risk spending based on the promise of a future large cash windfall, ie 2026 WC qualification. Remember the Horror in Honiara. Or what if FIFA completely change their mind, and stay with a future World Cup of 32 teams. Both unlikely, but could happen.

Anyway won't be such an easy process, finding quality AWs friendlies in the future, as all the Confederations setup Nations Leagues of their own. AFC teams busy with their Asian Cup in 2023.

And without AWs being involved in say a AFC/OFC combined H&A Nations League, there will very rarely be any quality teams playing in NZ (very few want to travel all the way to Aotearoa for a friendly over a 7 day FIFA window). And that's the real bane of contention, AWs playing so rarely at home. Not an easy fix.

In 2023 NZF will also likely switch a strong focus to the Football Ferns in buildup to home WWC. U20 WC in Indonesia next year, will likely be main focus of men's game in 2023. An age WC in a pretty good viewing time zone, hopefully. Though night kick off games could be past midnight in NZ.

Greive and Kirwan have shared similar sentiments since entering the All Whites fold, with the latter noting in particular how being made captain of the 1st XI helped set him on the path of pursuing a career in football.

They and Payne might be the only alumni in the current squad, but two other former 1st XI players – Michael Woud and Kelvin Kalua – have featured in recent All Whites teams, while another former student, Kane Wintersgill, is on Hay’s staff as an analyst.

A venue, date, and time for an All Whites match against Australia in September is close to being confirmed, alongside another across the Tasman as the two teams mark the 100th anniversary of their inaugural fixture.

Whether it’s played at Eden Park in Auckland or Sky Stadium in Wellington – the two most likely venues – there will be a good chance of a sell-out, especially if the All Whites win their playoff next week and it effectively becomes a World Cup send-off.

If the Socceroos successfully navigate their World Cup playoffs too, it could be an absolute blockbuster, at least as far as friendlies go.

But with $11.4 million of reserves in the bank, NZ Football’s commercial revenue increasing by 35% over the past three years, prize money for playing at the Women’s World Cup increasing (though not nearly fast enough), and qualification for men’s World Cups – and the resulting prize money (NZ$16.1 million just for making it in 2022) – set to become more straightforward, the financial landscape is changing.

“Every young kid who loves the sport should be able to get the opportunity to see their national team in action,” Pragnell said.

“We've gone through a bit of a drought, and we're about to resurrect that.”

“The All Whites and Football Ferns have to be visible and present to our young Kiwis who love football,” Pragnell added.

“But they also need to be visible and present to grow the brand and reach their commercial potential, so there are multiple reasons to be doing it.

“Historically it's been attempted and not always worked. I'm not casting any blame on anyone, but it's about doing it prudently.

“With the Women's World Cup and the 100-year anniversary, we’ve got some really fantastic opportunities to begin doing that and that’s really exciting.”

What the international football calendar looks like past 2024 is still up in the air. Fifa president Gianni Infantino’s push for men’s World Cups to take place every two years appears to have run out of steam, but change remains a possibility in the women’s game, and the timing and length of international windows in a broader sense is still under review.

Pragnell said NZ Football would be trying to have its say – which isn’t always easy, given there’s more than 200 Fifa member nations – but many of the barriers to arranging fixtures are set to remain in place, including rising costs stemming from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Being able and willing to spend more money will help, and Pragnell noted that the commercial performance of the matches on the cards in the next 12 months would be “an important litmus test for us”.

“We will play more than half a dozen games at home.

“Everyone knows that football's grown to the size where it is arguably the biggest sport in the country. We've got more than a million people who say they are football fans in this country.

“When we play these home games, we'll be urging them to get in behind it. Because this is an important litmus test, particularly on the revenue and the viability side.”

“On the cost side, there's some pretty big challenges in 2022, and we just have to continue to be prudent. I expect we'll see some normalisation of flight costs in 2023. But again, you never know what's around the corner – people wouldn't have expected a war in Europe and the impact that would have.

“All things going well, if costs normalise and the litmus tests prove good, then we are setting ourselves up for a model where we can continue to grow.”

The All Whites and Football Ferns are unique among New Zealand’s national teams, not just because they play so irregularly, but because when they assemble, players and staff fly in from all around the world.

When they come together, it’s a chance to them to connect with their fellow Kiwis, and that feeling is only heightened on the rare occasions when they play at home.

Just ask All Whites midfielder Joe Bell. By September, it will have been almost three years since he was last in New Zealand, and he can’t wait to return and play here.

“To have home fans behind us would be an incredible experience – one that I've only ever seen on TV or from in the stands myself.”

Right now, Bell’s focus is on Doha and the playoff with Costa Rica.

But there’s no place like home.
