Yeah, I assumed that scholarship players counted against the player roster but apparently you can have six which sit outside of the squad of 23.  That's surprising because I remember years ago, when Merick was in charge, the Phoenix were supportive of scrapping the salary cap provided we could increase the squad size and sign more young players for longer contracts.

I guess the issue is when they become 20 years old they're no longer eligible so you can only hold onto them for a few years as a scholarship, also means at an u20 world cup most of the players will be close to 20 and therefore a scholarship wouldn't hold them for long.
