Having an absolute shocker I'm afraid. Really can't put two passes together, can't keep the ball, terrible defensive errors, etc.

I don't wanna have a go at individual players of such an age but surely the alarm bells should be ringing at this stage for NZ - this year at age group world cups we have been outplayed by Mexico, Colombia, Chile and now Nigeria. All teams that are ranked well behind us in the womens rankings. I'd suggest it's a sign of things to come in the senior space as more and more nations start taking womens football more and more seriously.

It's even more frustrating when you realise these girls are being coached by the same guy, Leon Birnie, who helped the U17s to a famous 3rd place finish at the last world cup. This time around, they're not even going to get close to making it out of their own group.

Finished as a 4-0 drubbing. Ouch and the Germans next, who thrashed Chile 6-0!

Hopefully they rotate their squad against NZ

Final pool game midnight NZ time tonight. Could be a bit ugly if Germans (6-0 winners over Chile) play a full strength side.

A 3-1 loss to the Germans (1-1 until 54 mins). So 3 losses. GS 2 & GC 10

Lovely finish by Clegg for the goal last night though.

Did you see the farcical finish?
For those that didn’t, supposed to be seven added minutes. German coach hassled 4th official at ninety minutes due to lightning. Ref went over and talked to them for two minutes, looked bemused, then blew for full time. Commentator talking about this being dead rubber- regardless of result Germany top group, Nz last and not qualifying.
Sky coverage finished so I turned it off, but apparently a little later ref called them all back and restarted the game. Neither team wanted to play so they just played kick-about in the centre circle. Not sure if they did the full seven or someone saw sense and called it.

Ouch, I'd gone to bed on the original whistle.  Went back and watched the recording.  That would've altered some pass completion stats, and heat maps.

just to add to this a decent gap between stopping and then the referee restarting - the FIFA competitions officials didn't want to restart but the referee has ultimate control.  both teams didn't want to play the last 7 mins, germany in particular didn't want to play without re-warming up so they just did what they did for the last 7 mins while the referee ran around all super professional.

To me it's all about context.
We were shown up partly because the confederations such as Africa and South America that previously weren't very strong in women's football have been making big strides and are now producing more sides that are competitive.

But the major factor is that this was a NZ side which assembled a week before the tournament started, having played no qualifiers and no friendlies.
They played the one international friendly against Canada in the week before the tournament.
They were playing sides that had been together for several months and had come through tough qualifying tournaments and played many friendlies.
Chile had their South American qualifying tournament in April but had played in two friendly u-17 international tournaments since then:
https://anfp.cl/noticia/37406/la-preparacion-de-la-roja-femenina-sub-17-para-el-mundial-tuvo-un-provechoso-capitulo-en-mexico
In italy against Italy, Mexico and India.
And against Mexico, Canada and Colombia in Mexico in September.
Nigeria played six CAF qualifying matches in three rounds, home and away, between March and June.
Before the World Cup they had a camp in Turkey where they played Galatasaray's and Fenerbahce's women's teams.
Germany came through both qualifiers in March for the UEFA u-17 finals (three games) and the Finals (five games) in May. Plus friendlies before and after those events.
AFC qualifying was also cancelled and China, unable to play any friendlies due to their country' strict lockdown policies struggled like NZ, finishing bottom of their group in India.
Japan (quarter-finalists in India) by contrast played numerous friendlies this year, including three in France in August (two against France u-17 and one against a French women's top flight side):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan_women%27s_national_under-17_football_team#Results_and_fixtures
Canada and France also failed to win any matches in India, so perhaps we shouldn't feel too bad!

Nice to see another Taranaki player in the side. Been quite a list over the last few years considering the backwater Taranaki is for football.

Jerez from Western Springs is a hell of a young player - great on the ball technically, with good speed and some good old fashioned Chilean grit!

Sophie Cambell (GK)
Plays down in Palmy currently because…well, Taranaki.
WPrem in Taranaki regularly has scores where if you didn’t know it was football you’d be wondering if it was two tries or one and a few penalties.

I assume the point/question is this:

" Smith-Scott selected Katie for the Rangers AFC Women’s team that played in the Nelson league last year. They were told she couldn’t play because she was too young, but Smith-Scott refused. "

IMHO if you're good enough you're old enough, assuming the setup has good mentoring/pastoral care

Especially so in a small province like Marlborough-Nelson, where young Katie is likely head & shoulders above every other young girl her age. No point her scoring 10 goals each Saturday in the local girls age group stuff.

She obviously is serious about her football, so for her continued development she either plays against women or boys near her age. That's if her parents don't want to (or don't have the funds to) send her across the Strait to the Nix Academy for example. I'm sure when the time is right it will be adios Blenheim for the next step. Interesting that the family had sometime in Switzerland.

The OFC Executive Committee has now approved the change of format and redraw of the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship.

The competition will feature eight teams in two groups of 4 for the Group stage.

The Play-off stage will consist of the play-off for fifth place and the play-off for seventh place. The knockout stage will consist of the semi-finals, the play-off for third place and the final.

I thought it was odd that Samoa withdrew, they put a bit of effort and recruitment into the under 20's.  Had a look on their Facebook page, on 20th August there was a post ...
Football Federation Samoa is now seeking players who wish to train and trials for the OFC Under 16 Women's Champion 2023.
... that's bad less than a month out, no wonder they withdrew.

Interesting result in the other Pool, Tonga beating Solomon Islands 5-1. Young Tamaa Faletau with all 5 goals for the Tongans!

One to keep an eye on this tourney. Might be worth a look at by the Nix Academy.
