Conger - still shark

Were you one of the three salty NRFL referees sitting near the benches moaning about every decision?

Nope, but Conger's terrible.

Never understood the Conger hate, is it because he is a referee or do people think he is worst than other NZ referees? Is it just because you see him refereeing more often? Or is it Tall Poppy because he actually is quite successful as a ref.

People that are in the know, including FIFA referee selection panels must see something different as he keeps getting games at tournaments. I mean he just refereed the Superclásico de las Américas between Brazil and Argentina recently too.

FIFA refereeing selection is based on giving opportunity and exposure to all confederations. So just like Solomon Islands aren't a superpower at U20 level because they played at the U20 World Cup, neither is Conger a quality international referee. He may well be the top rated referee in the confederation, but as I said, that's the equivalent of winning the tallest dwarf competition. Besides Conger is nowhere near good enough as O'Leary or Hester, and they were both well below average as international referees.

Sure I get that and maybe saying he is the best is subjective but he still has to do enough to get selected and he is the one getting selected from NZ admittedly small selection pool to do those games.

Anyway, this isn't a refereeing thread. Back to criticising Auckland City instead.

I thought it just formalises what was happening anyway with the connection between ACFC & Central United

Is it any different to what Eastern Suburbs & Hamilton Wanderers have with National League licences?

So what will happen to, say, a Cam Howieson at 3KU?

Though it is a fact players can still transfer from NL clubs to RL clubs at end of season.

Player Poaching by using the brand of Auckland City which suggests a pathway from NRFL Youth to National League that we all know isn't there.

At least Suburbs do actually put some of the players they have poached at NYL and U17's level into their NL team.

If I recall correctly - was their not a federation pushing for a cap on Handi players in one club?

ACFC is now an official all year club, would this circumvent this restriction if implemented?

Well they have been. Until they haven’t. Isn’t it a lucky bonus for a team who lost a playoff or got relegated to be called into the top league? Whinging about it is a bit rich (ie Claudelands)

No pathway? Looking at their current squad Maro Bonsu-Maro, Myer Bevan, Cameron Brown (GK) and Clayton Lewis all played in the NYL for Auckland City as did Te Atawhai Hudson-Wihongi

In terms of putting a squad together, fair to say there's a big difference between the northern premier league and the waibop women's league. If they're in the latter, they'd get a fair few more players than if they're in the latter.

alright - if you think that's pathway success (even though some of them were 1 season only players in NYL and from other clubs) then cool - case closed, nothing to see here.

It's as much a success as importing a whole team to win the National League!

Clayton Lewis has always been a Wellington kid and it was Neil Emblen who had Myer Bevan in at the Springs 1st team.
No way ACFC can take credit for those two. TAHW was Onehunga Sports if I remember correctly.

(not sure you wrote  that right) but who cares? They DIDN'T earn promotion. If by chance an invitation comes later they can choose to accept it or turn it down.

(you're right) I agree on that point. But can understand why the Claudelandses of the world are pissed this has taken so long to sort (it was ratified by the clubs mid-November?).

They gave those players a chance to play NL football, winning was just a byproduct.

Sort of - this expands on what Andrew Voerman posted

from Section 5 of the NZF document National League moving forward 2021 and beyond

"To ensure the national league continues to support and drive player development, New Zealand Football shall amend its Club Licensing Regulations so that clubs participating in the national league are required to, either directly or indirectly through a partnership approved by New Zealand Football and the relevant federation, operate a second team (development team) in a regional league and/or implement a player development programme."

Auckland City affiliating with AFF and using Central as their partnership team is just the first one to do it

Would likely expect to see Hawkes Bay United and Napier link up and Team Wellington and Miramar

So what team will be playing in the Northern League (the Regional League) - will it be Auckland City or Central.  If it is to be Central, their players will be registered to Auckland City, so how does that work.  NZF Regs say that you cannot be registered for more than one club

Central.

Hard to assess other matters until NZF releases more detail on its new men's leagues format.

I gave up pretty quickly. When the steam is so bad tout can't tell the difference between Kaltak and Bevan, it's not worth watching.

I'll take the 6-0 beating of Ricky Herbert though.

Yeah - I gave up too. Stream was awful. Fijian "club" (they are district teams rather than clubs) football seems to be going backwards. Lautoka got beat 8-0 in one of the other groups and TW beat Ba 8-0 a few years back.

These refs are actually shocking.

Goal scoring opportunity, keeper out of the box, hand balls it, yellow card ?
