Thanks for starting this up AW82, many years of football gossip, banter and lols in these threads.

Seems like it could the coaches causing more headlines in the early days of the season with Ekow going from Coastal to Chch Utd, and may have taken some players too. And what's this about the Mainland Director of Football also coaching Selwyn? Surely not.

Our other source of gossip, the hilarious Canty Transfer News facebook page has been eerily silent since November. We need to bring that back too.

I see that in a pre-season game Christchurch United and Cashmere Technical turned into a bit of a goal fest ending at  5 - 5.

In the the worst kept deal in the off season, as Vim stated in his post above,  Ekow in the United dug out. Photo's on United facebook page have Jordan Spain  (formerly Coastal Spirit) playing for United.

Maybe partly. But I was speaking to a Ukrainian last year in NZ, who pretty much said exactly the same thing. The Ukraine-Russia situation is complicated, something that very very few NZers (or any foreigners) would fully grasp, and you need to go well back in history to get a real good understanding of it.

And that's not to defend Putin/Russia, it's just I think people from there (both countries) seem to get frustrated by uneducated foreigners asking them dumb questions. Sort of part of their DNA, and they just can't be bothered.

Meyn is very wealthy but is clearly not an oligarch in terms of having assets frozen. The reported cash flow problems are more likely due to certain Russian banks being denied access to the SWIFT (funds transfer) system.

He's also made Canty clearly his home, and is there for the long haul. I'm sure the ChCh Utd players & staff know that.

They won't like being unpaid forever (if that rumour is true), but eventually some sort of peace will come to Ukraine. Though it's all a bit depressing at the moment. So they will likely have to be patient. For how long who knows.

But Meyn isn't a 'fly by night' operators like some previous NZ football owners/backers. So don't imagine is the end of ChCh Utd or anything.

I guess that's all irrelevant though? With his assets reportedly frozen, the decision on whether his source of wealth/funds is acceptable or not will be decided by the legal system.

So sounds like some Canty football folk, no doubt who are not big fans of ChCh Utd, have concluded via some rumours/Chinese whispers that Meyn has had his assets frozen by NZ Govt?? Maybe same sort of folks, who would struggle to find Ukraine on a map. Then wonder why Meyn can't be bothered giving his views on the complicated Ukraine/Russia situation - something 99% of Kiwis won't fully understand - given many folks ain't big on actual fact checking.

Maybe ChCh Utd players & staff are not getting paid, but as mentioned above by Steptoe, that's highly likely more related to Meyn having problems with SWIFT system effectively suspended for Russian banks. A very different thing.

And what is the procedure for NZ Govt freezing someone's assets in NZ? Does anyone know? Is it made public? What NZ agency does the investigating? SFO? How do you decide which rich Russians are friends of Putin, and who ain't? Good luck with that.

Doesn't seem the Russian billionaire in Northland has yet been added to the the government's new Russian travel ban list (as at 9th March). He seems a bigger target than Meyn, given protesters demonstrating near his home etc??

as part of the recent law passed to sanction Russia and their assets it can be done, it will be listed somewhere - who and what etc but I'm not 100% sure if it will be made public, probably not due to privacy laws in NZ. As far as I'm aware noone has yet been sanctioned by our government, the law was only passed last week so no surprising really.

Yes bit of a 'derby' round first up. First couple of rounds may throw up a few 'odd' results due to those clubs that may not be able to put at their first choice team due to Covid.

Will be interested to see the line-ups in the opening round as without the 'old' transfer page hard to confirm the actual player movements until players run out.

Was speaking to one of the coaching staff the other week and they insisted that they had only 'signed' on player's from within Christchurch, which to be I know is not the case.

Is there going to be any promotion of the league this year? Mainland did a Facebook post 2 weeks ago saying it's coming soon, they put the draw online earlier this week, and the Southern League page updated their cover photo.

Is this the best we can do?

I'll bite, this is what the forum is for right?

I'm not a fan of Chch Utd, but I'm certainly able to locate the Ukraine, and am happy to say what a sh!tshow it is over there right now. You (and Slava) can run others down and say 99% of us don't understand it, but it's pretty obvious one country has invaded another and is actively killing thousands of people and destroying their property. How anyone can say that's ok (or say "you won't understand") is beyond me. And yes I know the same thing has happened (or is happening) in Afghanistan/Iraq/Palestine etc but that doesn't make what is happening in Ukraine any better. But that's not why I don't like Chch Utd.

Sure it's great he has set up a wicked resource at Yaldhurst, but don't forget it's $2500 per season for a early teen to play in their academy. Multiply that by a whole team, and a whole bunch of teams that's a good nudge.  This ain't a local football club. Some might say that's all fine and dandy, and that's all good too.

For the last few years, Chch Utd have simply bought their first team and coach from elsewhere. The biggest coup was a few years back poaching almost all of Ferrymead Bays, including the coach. They didn't work out too well for them, I don't think anyone is still there.

This year they have bought a massive coach, a rival's head coach as his assistant, a few players from other clubs and a number of players from out of town. Doesn't really link that well with their academy programme does it? I've also heard their game DAY cost for the squad is (was) $8000. They also pinched Mainland's operations manager as their general manager but that didn't last long either.

So for all these reasons, I'm more than happy that this could all fall flat on its face because of the disgraceful actions the parent country, and the sh!thouse goings on at the club. What's Russian for Karma?

Disclaimer: also aware they could come out and thump my club this weekend, if that happens, a "take that" type comment on Monday doesn't count. :-) Happy to discuss, that's what makes this thread great!
