Play like the first half against Liverpool on the weekend and it wil be a cricket score
We weren't actually too bad in the first half - too loose in defence and wayward with shots (Fred!!), but the bones were there.

Play like the second half against Liverpool on the weekend and it will be a cricket score - to us.

Oh dear. Fatal words spoken.

Ahh well, if you don't believe - then what's the point?

Having said that, I've cancelled my Spark account.......there's only so much you can take......
Come on mate, dont be like that. I remember when we were relegated, was living in the UK then and went to a number of games. We have to take the bad with the good and in the past it has been worse than this. Its an ugly season ahead of us but dont be one of those that only watches when we are winning.

United in the 2nd division were averaging crowds of 58k and away from home all the other teams enjoyed great attendances. A lot of good came from that relegation. Dead wood removed and a new United created under Docherty. The rest is history. So although it was a bad time, it was also good for the long term.

Other than amusement, I feel for the club. I blame most of it on the players. Pogba plays well once every 5 or so games. He should be concentrating more on his football than his hair colour and photo shoots. There are some good players at the club but they seem to be in it more for themselves rather than for the club. Credit to Liverpool, they were so clinical. Reminded me of when QPR won 4-1 at Old Trafford on New Years day and Denis Bailey scored a hattrick.

Lastly, because of the situation at Old Trafford, you are finding out who the real United fans are and not the plastic glory hunter ones. That too should be good for the club. Who's up for the hard slog when things get tough. Have faith stick in there.

Dear oh dear, if he doesn't get involved at training sessions, what on earth does he do then!

Observe them - the same thing Sir Alex used to do.

I'm not here to defend Ole, I think his time is fast approaching, but I think he has been trying to do what SAF used to do. That is take on a higher manager role, which means at things like training simply observing the players, while passing the tactical nuances to Mike Phelan. SAF used to do this with Phelan and René Meulensteen. In his book SAF even credits René with the tactical evolution from 2007 and beyond.

Mind you, Sir Alex used to sack them occasionally.

Regardless of OGS, I'm concerned the only replacement being floated around is Conte. A tactically stubborn manager who will no doubt need two seasons of getting the players he wants and moulding United into whatever he plays.

United needs to find a manager that fits the club. Not the other way around. Otherwise we're going to embark on another LVG/Mourinho era.

As I said previously United would do much better taking a stab on an up and coming manager than getting a big name in simply because "tHeY'rE a PrOvEn wInNeR"

The difference was that Meulensteen  was an outstanding coach and we don't have anyone even close to his talents or experience. Ole has employed people that would not get a job anywhere else.

Cant figure out how to trim down the reply to the bit I am responding to, but re: Conte, he won the league in his first seasons at Juve and Chelsea, and his 2nd season at Inter (after inheriting a clusterf*ck), so I would think he'd be very well placed to deliver quick success.
You probably would've done alright with Tuchel in hindsight.

Personally I think you're still dealing with the chasm left by Fergie. He was there so long with such an entrenched and proven method, it's not easy to move away from that. We're still dealing with that at Arsenal too and will be for some time most likely.
Moyes may have been underwhelming to the fans but he seemed an attempt to go like-for-like. I still think you didn't give him enough time.
Van Gaal and Mourinho were the change of course to get proven winners.
Now it seems you've gone back to trying to replace Fergie like for like, to the extent of even bringing back Phelan and other ex-Fergie personalities.
Chelsea are used to the merry-go-round, they seem well set up for Managers to come in and pick up a squad from where it was left. They have had fairly consistent success for a while now, with whomever is at the helm.

The resulting hangover when you've had one manager for two decades.......it's inevitable that the fans want the same consistency but a new manager wants to establish their style too.

Of course the new manager wants to establish their own style but the current one has proven he has no idea and is completely out of his depth. He has managed  over 235 games for Utd and he still has no idea.

Apparently, although 90 wins would say he has had some success, 55% winning record.
I dont know or care really how that compares to any other Man U managers, but I'm guessing its not good enough?

Any low ego workhorses out there?
I think that was a feature of Sir Alex’s teams too- dogged players such as Fletcher or John O’Shea or even the much more technically gifted and attacking Park Ji Sung. Guys who are incredibly fit and out-performing expectations, but also consistent and reliable.
I feel that United is short a couple of these kinds of players at least. Ole’s success in part was that he was a United guy- and to me that was consistency, mental toughness and application, as much as glitz or whatever. I think we’ve definitely seen some of that from him and his teams, but it is different times and much more challenging ones tbh.

I think, with O'Shea, Fletcher, the Nevilles, Butt, Brown, they were not only your tenacious-for-the-team kind of guys, but they also all came up from the juniors. Does OGS really do that? I haven't seen any evidence of that, aside from Greenwood who was always nailed-on. Even though they might not have the skill, players like Williams, Garner, Galbraith, Laird, Barnard, Mengi etc might have the 'pashun' and drive that we miss. I'd rather Williams than AWB. He might not be the same level of tackling, but you'd know he'd fudge someone up to get the ball.

Mind you, I wouldn't want a team of McTominays......

I think even those low-ego workhouses had a fantastic core skill set that we are only now coming to appreciate. It was not acceptable to be John O'Shea the workhorse to go and misplace a pass once he's finally won it back.

Unfortunately with many of the team who I'd give a similar label to do not maintain the same high standards.

Haha.... no no that's not what I meant.  Teams come out and play the game of their lives. And instead of leaning on the fact that they're better footballers how players get nervous and shut down! You definitely wouldn't want to follow our boys into a war.

Yeah, I think that’s the kind of thing I meant with mental toughness and consistency.
But I guess it’s also about leadership and ego in the squad. Who dictates standards in the team, who is thinking about next window etc.
I mean O’Shea is rarely guna be hounded by tabloids over rumors of transfers!

Edit: Also early season, still in striking distance, a few reasonable results, have a half decent window, some players have a burst of form and who knows?

We have some injuries so it will be hard to pick. I would drop Maguire and Pogba for a start. I have always plumped for 2 up front anyway. The midfield will be the key this weekend. DVB looked OK for the 4 mins he was on but it is too much of an ask.

Fred and McTominay surely can’t play every game? Sooner rather than later it’s going to be suspension or injury? Or just push them as far as the window and get in anyone, though hopefully someone decent?
Edit: sorry dozy day, just got my daughter into a high chair- it’s the derby. All hands on deck, marker in the sand etc.
