Were the calls correct? I feel like people have bought into the idea that FIFA has rigged it all for Messi, and now every call that goes Argentina's way becomes proof in people's minds. Am I just missing something here? To be clear, I'm not calling out this forum, since no one here is crying rigged; just more of a broader internet phenomenon I am noticing.

On a separate note, though, I don't see Argentina making it past the semifinals. Needing late-minute comebacks against Cape Verde and Egypt isn't exactly an inspiring sign of a World Cup repeat.
I stop short of saying "rigged" but the issue is that everyone else falls victim to the inconsistency of VAR, while Argentina so far have always shaded the right side of 50/50 decisions, some examples:

1. Messi not being sent off against Algeria (definite red)
2. Foul in the build-up for their goal against Austria not given (I'd say 75% foul)
3. Foul in the build-up to Egypt's goal given (I say foul but again on the right side of the VAR coin toss)
4. Foul in build-up of one of their own goals against Egypt not given (soft but VAR barely looked and again, the right side of the VAR coin toss)
Messi foul didnt qualify as SFP as there wasn't excessive force. It was high contact but glancing, so a yellow would be the correct decision.

I dont recall the Austria challenge, but 3 & 4 were also objectively correct decisions by the VAR. Referees getting calls correct isnt a conspiracy.

There's plenty of bad calls to discuss across the tournament but theres no evidence to support a narrative of favouritism towards Argentina.

I think there are a lot of Africans that are complaining of an obviously rigged system against so called "small teams".

There are too many incidents in this world cup were VAR sees things for "big countries" and goes missing for the so called "small countries" in football.

Are they wrong?
I'd say odds are they are just whingers. Egypt match for example: going from 2-0 up to losing 2-3 would be pretty weird for a rigged match for example because why would they let you go 2-0 up.

Most likely it's just some weird bias in that they expect big teams to do well, so VAR checks slightly more in depth or that these decisions are more noticeable when they impact the losing side.

BUT it's the right kind of "sounds smart, is stupid" idea that I could see it happening somewhere at some point, because there is the (false) belief that big teams struggling is a bad thing.

Glancing??? He hops on his leg from behind! Have you guys actually watched the tackle???

Glancing is probably understating it but it doesn't have the excessive force or risk of serious injury for SFP.

Breakdown with direct reference to the laws linked.

If we want to talk favouritism the best examples are the suspended bans for Balogun and Ronaldo.

I'm sorry, this is a completely delusional take. The guy is quoting rules and then making up his own scenario to suit:

- He argues the force is less intense because the attackers leg was in the air. Yet the force is enough to push his leg down enough to roll his ankle
- He argues Messi didn't apply "full force" on the calf... which it clear is from the screenshot in his own video
- He say's there was a "realistic" attempt to challenge for the ball. Except Messi has no realistic chance of winning it. The only reason he's even close is because Messi has already gone through the defenders leg with his knee.
- Literally the paragraph after the one he highlights says "any player who lunges from behind with excessive force OR endangers the safety of an opponent ... is guilty of serious foul play". Look at the guy's ankle, how is a tackle from behind not endangering him?

You're welcome to disagree, I'll back my ref training and the expertise of other referees.

He has nothing to gain by lying or obfuscating what happened and hes been very critical of other refereeing decisions at this tournament.

I do think it is a decision where different people have different thresholds for SFP, but the referees have applied a high bar for cardable offenses throughout and this is consistent with that approach.

@southernix mate totally agree that part of the world are whingers 😂

But there is a lot of evidence that referees and VAR have favoured big nations. How did VAR get the Ghana penalty against England wrong? There is just know explaining it.

Messi should have got a red card. They gave the American a red card for a lot less.

Anyways don't think the Argies are going to win this WC. They are one of the worst whingers.

Just the other day theprof was quoting IFAB guidelines. Which based on those:
1. Messi is arguably out of control. He's just gone through the player and is lunging forward. He's not going to get the ball.
2. Contact is high, above the ankle, studs up
3. Messi leads with studs and his leg is stuff at the point of contact
4. The tackle is from behind

+ plenty of referees have said the opposite.

But most of this whole world cup discussion has gotten pretty tiresome so I think I'll just leave it to you folks to chew on.

Fucks sake there's no game tomorrow.

That's when you know we're right at the business end. Feels like it's flown by even with the extra games.

Three for me, and two for them.

@dairyflat fairly sure I can do Norway, Belgium and Switzerland!

Norway, despite the way it uses the profits differing, is still very much an oil revenue dependent state. It makes most of its exports in oil and natural gas. And it continues to hunt whales.

Belgium is one of the worst colonists of all time. Google Belgium in the Congo. It has yet to apologise for its behaviour, despite getting close. And Tielemans annoyed Ryan Thomas with his diving bs.

Switzerland was the original hipster xenophobic country before it was cool. It had a party political broadcast ad in the early 2000s featuring a white sheep kicking a black sheep off a mountain. And the accounts and deposits in the banks from the 1930s and 40s don’t reflect well on it at all. And they play cards with their own deck that differs completely from the deck everyone else uses.

So job done, everyone left is cancelled?

With respect to Belgian Congo. My friend has been sending me material about it over the last couple of weeks. It's something he's just started looking at. The Belgian Congo was an absolute horror show. European powers and their "civilising mission". Pah!! 🤬
Belgium still won't answer questions about its role there. Mostly around exactly the contribution, to its treasury, from its plunder of DRC.

Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's living in Agadez, Niger.  Spending more time in town, Agadez, as bad people in the desert are spoiling the good life.

I think the narrative around Argentina is fascinating - They always struggle against the lesser sides, it's what they do - you always suffer as we in Spanish, but this Argentina side is built differently from others, they have this incredible determination & never say die spirit that is hard to really explain.. they dont play well in patches, but find ways.. Since 2022 when they won, it seems the team has been like on a farewell tour of Lionel Messi & co.. playing random friendlies against lower ranked nations home and away, and walked through qualifers & really coasting through the 2024 copa america victory..

It wasnt until Cape Verde game where they got a shock of "Hey, we are in a world cup now" & the sudden chnage of pace intensity shocked their system, you could see the pressure on their shoulders & their body language was a heavy one, but found a way.. players admitted so afterwards.

Today I thought the intensity was very good, after conceding a early goal, they went on front foot & probably should have been ahead at half time if wasnt for some goalie brilliance. For Scaloni, there is a tactical saying in portguese that roughly translates to "trying to get a balance of the team right, is like having a small blanket on cold night".. hes still trying to work a few things out.. especially on the right hand wing.. when Lautero came on, Messi played the "Di Maria role" (What i would do to have him back!) & it unlocked Lautero & Julian to great effect... You have players like Cuti Romero & Licha Martinez who EPL fans might know, when they play for Argentina they play with the biggest pair of nuts (sorry if its graphic) & just play like every game is their last..

Argentina & Messi dont need many chances or moments to make it count, and in knock out football, thats something that happens... Never, ever rule out Argentina..

Don’t get me wrong Nixieboys. I want Argentina to win. I just think Scaloni is putting too much faith in the old guard that won them the last WC. There are plenty of players who are just too old and too slow. De Paul is playing pub football in the USA now and is a shadow of the player of 2022. They seriously lack pace all over the field. Unfortunately they never replaced Di Maria. They are a team of passers. They don’t have dribblers or speedsters who can open up a low block.
On defense they are getting exposed. The attackers aren’t quick enough to track back and the team is cut in two.
Messi is still brillant but his speed off the mark has slowed. He lost loads of balls and Egypt easily contained him for most of the match…..that’s Egypt who before this tournament had never won a WC match.
This Argentine team has a huge amount of heart and grit. But I don’t think that will be enough this time…..but I hope I’m wrong
Absolutely gutted that Switzerland got past Colombia. Argentina vs Colombia would have been a dream game. Switzerland….the most boring team left in the competition.
So, who knows who will win this game.
I have an Argentine friend who said that if Argentine has one of two pathways to chose. It will always go down the most difficult one.

Not to mention Belgium's hand in the assassination of Congo's first PM Patrice Lumumba.

King Leopold II. A truly nasty piece of work.

Deep-sea mineral mining and whale hunting aside, I'm cheering for the Norwegians. They are mostly a likeable bunch.

Oh don’t get me wrong, they’re fairly likable. Though I’ve heard complaints that the younger generation don’t appreciate all the cushy pleasures oil money is affording them and some are brattish. I haven’t met these people though.

It’s a kind of parody of liberal society, 2/3 of the former North Sea Empire members. The UK has eliminated coal fired power! Though it has outsourced production to places who definitely still use coal. Norway will hit zero carbon internally, has a lot of electric cars, all kinds of energy conservation measures and makes most of its money digging up and exporting fossil fuels to burn. Addicts dressing up, very nicely mind, for polite society.

One of the best works of literature reflecting on human nature was penned after witnessing Belgian Congo first hand.
"Heart of Darkness", by Joseph Conrad.  Luminous prose by a man whose English was a second language (actually third, after his native Polish and then French that he learned first in order to join the French merchant navy after leaving home).

And, no games today.
