Go the UAE!

Pretty bland start by both teams to be fair. Aussies more structured in their play, although UAE look like they'll be quite a tricky side to get past. When they've broken forward so far they've looked decent.

Vamos Socceroos. Can understand wanting AWs to beat them, but otherwise don't understand why Kiwis wouldn't want Aus to go well. It's not their wanker cricket team! Can't really think of anyone in their football team I dislike, and they are kind of enough to let us have a club in their A League.

Yeah a pretty dull first 30 mins, some poor quality passing, including cross from Goodwin miles overshot when Aussies threatened on a break. Nerves maybe.

But came a bit alive later in the half. Ryan had to make a smart save on his right near post. Devlin's Hearts team mate Atkinson seems to be struggling on the right. UAE's no 21 on the left a real handful. Few dirty late tackles from the Emiratis. They should have more than the 1 yellow. Rowles with Socceroos best chance, a freekick skimming the top of his head when he was free in the box.

UAE with 53% possession. Mooy the hub of all Aussies build ups. Not the fastest game. Warm out there no doubt. Plenty of sweat coming from the ref. Stadium not full.

Not too much so far to worry the Peruvians. But Qatar will be a bit out of their comfort zone (Aussies and obviously UAE both play plenty in this part of the world) compared to Lima & Barcelona.

Will never get behind the Aussies, doesn't matter if it's football or competitive kite flying. Just can't, it's not in my blood to do something like that. 😂

I don't like UAE theatrics... ref is helping them though as much as he can. The amount of fouls he has waved away by them is shocking. Aussie bench fuming at times and rightly so.

So Socceroos get up 2-1.
First Irvine scores after some great lead up work by Boyle.

Then almost straight after, the rooster turns feather duster, as Irvine hashes a cross, and UAE's Brazilian striker Canedo pounces. 1-1. Some great work prior by UAE no 21 (Harib Abdalla Suhail). Only age 19 but man he was a threat all night. Pace & skill. Faded a bit 2nd half.

Hrustic saves the day with a quality volley after a corner was cleared. Shades of Youton's volley smacking the cross bar against the AWs. Great technique from Hrustic, helped by a UAE defender deflecting it away from the keeper who may have saved the initial shot. Not given as an oggie.

So 3 of the 4 Intercontinental Playoff teams from 2017, return in 2022. Costa Rica the newcomers to the Playoff party.

Aussies being lucky enough to draw Honduras in 2017, after USA choked in Trinidad.

If Aus qualify, there is more chance the A league will have international breaks next season.

Peruvians getting ahead of themselves. A whole 30 min TV show dedicated to the explosion in figurine & playing card trade, that will occur when they qualify for Qatar.

Day off tomorrow for public servants, and whole nation will come to a standstill for the game, which kicks off 1pm local time. No one is thinking about a loss!
https://news.middleeast-24.com/sports/amp/255104

“We announce that next Monday will be an official holiday in the country to allow the people to watch the national team match in the World Cup qualifiers,” said Alejandro Salas, Peru’s Minister of Culture.

It has not yet been determined for the private sector whether employees will be granted official leave or not, but according to reports, the majority of companies will join the government’s decision because it is optional.

The Minister of Culture added: “We cannot deceive ourselves, there is no Peruvian who does not want to see his country’s national team. In recent years, the national team has become a Source of pride and a symbol of identity for us. Peru needs union on this day.”

He continued, “We know that Peru’s qualification for the World Cup will revive the economy, because friends can watch the match in restaurants and bars, as well as families will unite and celebrate together with each goal.”

HT 0-0. Pretty even. Neither keeper a save?? But Socceroos with best chances. Duke couple snap shots early on.

Mooy controlling the tiempo (can Bell do the same?). Boyle a real threat down Aussie right side. You see a goal coming via some magic from him

Peru again lacking a cutting edge

Pretty cagey affair. But at 67 minutes don't think there's been a shot on target. Peru with the better of the second half so far.

ET. Yipe Peru lack that cutting edge. Ryan not one save??

Thought Hrustic may have scored there for a moment. Ball almost snuck through Gallese

Feels one mistake either side will decide it or it’s pens

Looks like they replaced Ryan at 120 mins for Redmayne to face the shootout, along with Goodwin for Behich.

Brave decision by Arnold to bring on Redmayne for the shoot out. The commentators were very obviously dubious about it and if it hadn't gone well for them Arnold would've been publicly flogged by the media.

Looked like Behich had cramp. Had to come off

Watched game in a Lima bar. Deathly silence when Redmayne made the winning save. Then bar empty 2 mins later. Flores header hitting the post in ET the decisive moment as it turned out

Oh and I guess result kills the rumoured Arnold sacked, Poppa to Socceroos and Uffie to VUC musical chairs.

I remember the Dutch did it in the worldcup in 2014. It makes sense if a game's going to pens. Redmayne would have been able to practice pens almost exclusively in training, and more importantly memorise how each player in Peru had taken them before. It also unsettles the other team.

Fly over Paulsen and put him on the bench. Sure it's a small sample size, but don't remember another NZ keeper seemingly being as good as him in a shootout!

Devious or mischievous is probably a bit kind. But the Latinos ain't adverse to lasers, jet flyovers, spitting at players (Socceroos in Uruguay early 2000s), so bugger it I have no problem with what he did. Wonder if it did get in Peruvian keeper Gallese's head. Where's me water bottle.

Really interesting doco on Socceroos and their win over Uruguay in 2005 playoffs, to get to 2006 Germany WC, their first World Cup in 32 years.

Poppa had one of the Uruguayans by the throat in the tunnel, about to run on the pitch!!  No time for playing nice.

Surprisingly poor results for Australia U16s in the AFF Championship as they finished bottom of their group with only a solitary point. They lost 2-3 to Myanmar (Luka Coveny scoring one of the goals), 2-4 to Cambodia and drew their final game 2-2 against Malaysia. Youth results, especially at U16, are pretty volatile, but you'd think Australia would be able to be more competitive.

Luckily for them, this competition doesn't act as qualifiers for either the U17 World Cup or the U17 AFC Championship. Australia host one of the qualifying groups for the U17 AFC Champs in October in Shepparton, a group of four alongside China, Cambodia and the Northern Mariana Islands. Home advantage will help, but only topping the group guarantees a spot (5 of the 10 group runners up also qualify), though this dress rehearsal couldn't have gone much worse.

Australia have qualified for three of six U17 World Cups since leaving for AFC (in 2011, 2015 and 2019), making the Round of 16 in all three of those tournaments. AFC gets four spots at youth World Cups, so a semifinal is enough, though no Australian team has won an AFC tournament at U17 or U20 level since joining (after winning 22/24 tournaments participated in across both levels when in OFC).

Lucy Zelic went on a rant about this the other day. I don't know all the specifics but people mentioned that the team didn't have a coach appointed right until the last minute & then they withdrew just before flying out cuz they got covid. So not sure much prep time was put into this team, so maybe not a surprise they struggled?

Admirable message. Be interesting to see if other teams do similar.
But likely won't help the frosty relations between Football Australia & the conservative West Asian/Arab AFC bloc.
