Thats a loss for the nix but to be expected. Fair enough to Callum there is a league actually playing, he has a couple of mates there and if the money is comparable it would beat sitting around for a few months waiting for a contact offer for a league which doesn’t start for a long time and one which may require a number of months sitting overseas in a hub.

I don't want to this that because denial, but the A leagues attraction for players may indeed be lessened. Aussie PM mentioning trans-Tasman bubble possibilities.

haha youre joking right? That bubble wont be in existence until mid next year. Wait until theres interstate travel between all states and then add atleast 3 months on to that before anyone would be comfortable for an international bubble.

Gardner, who fostered a relationship with the Ole Football Academy through the New Zealand organisation’s links with Swedish club Torslanda, said he believed McCowatt, Just and Wilkins would have a better chance to showcase themselves to bigger clubs by being based in Europe.

“Larger clubs in Europe are looking for data points proving players will have future success in Europe, and it's very difficult to make that evaluation coming from much weaker leagues abroad,” he said.

“I'm a firm believer that young players need to prove themselves at smaller clubs in Europe before expecting to jump into bigger clubs.

“It's very difficult for young players from abroad to get first team minutes at bigger clubs as well, so ultimately it can be detrimental to their development to sign with the 'biggest' club they can find.”

The interview with Brockie on the Between Two Beers podcast illustrated the opposite. He went from being the lone shining star at the Knights to almost ruining his career by going to Sydney FC and getting no game time.

Alphonso Davis had those data points, he played only a few games for Canada and in MLS before Bayern Munich signed him. In theory no player should be invisible if they get their games into the database. Reality is they need a bit of luck and connection as well.
I'm happy for McCowatt hope he is doing well, I thought he was not very consistent for us and that is may why he only got into 2 tier Danish league. Singh and Cacae on the otherhand almost always delivered and looked somehow special on the ball.

McCowatt grew over the year and was pretty decent at the end. If he can build on that it will be interesting to see how far he goes. Last year was his first year as a pro afterall.

For those who watched him in Handy Prem, what have you guys made of Cals development over the last year? Did you expect more from him in a nix shirt, or was his performances about expected with the level up?

I think he was played out of position in the Phoenix.  He didn't really get a chance to play in David Balls spot which would be closer to position seen him play previously.

yeah, can't comment on his time at Suburbs as I didn't watch them much. But when he was played on the right wing at Auckland City, with the trio of him, Tade and de Vries all feeding off each other's creativity, you could tell he knew what he was doing, even at 18.

This

He looks like a player who could progress quite well in the right environment with good coaching. It appears the American owners of his new club are well financed and ambitious. Hopefully they have a good coaching setup. I am not sure where Cal’s best playing position will be. He has a good football brain and uses his body well. Time will tell.

It’s interesting to see that American investment in European football clubs is on the rise. The EPL is too expensive for many investors who are now looking at cheaper options on the continent. In France American investors have bought Olympic Marseille, Bordeaux and recently Caen football club. There has been quite a bit of friction between traditional club supporters and the new yankee owners. The new buyers have been quite open about their ambitions.....making money from trading players. Pick up cheap young players and develop them and then sell them for a good profit.

Young kiwis footballers are developing  a “smallish” profile in Europe. The “Singh from NZ to Bayern” signing made quite a bit of noise. Also the performance of the young kiwis at the last junior WC got noticed. Traditionally agents have looked to South America and Africa for cheap talent but the more progressive agents now  include NZ. Not saying it’s going to be a landslide. But clubs outside the big five leagues would certainly be keeping an eye on NZ.

IMO this will create quite an opportunity for the Nix. Hopefully when this Covid Shiite is out of the way the Nix can get their Academy up and running. There is now a clear pathway established from Weenix to Phoenix to pro career in the Northern Hemisphere. There is an enormous amount of talent in NZ football. If Welnix can pick up a steady revenue stream for trading players then it can only be good for the future of the club. It’s a shame the Nix couldn’t have got  McCowatt to sign for longer. They might have got a cheque for his transfer to Denmark and future percentage of any transfers.

When Wests won Central League in 2017(?), Cal played 9 and left wing in a fluid front 3 (that often included Noah Billingsley). He had Edge(H), Eli and OPP feeding him from midfield. Wests dominated possession all over the park, from the GK out to CBs like Kyle Adams, Mike Faber, Nando Pijnaker, and Liam Gerathy.

I liken the first Euro club moves of the current Ole crop of players, plus Cacace, Bell, Woud to Ryan Thomas’ move to PEC Zwolle; a stepping stone. They all have the potential to move to a bigger club/league if they have a bit of luck, stay clear of serious injury and prove themselves.

The future is bright.

Or sign with the bigger club and get loaned out to the smaller club for game time - E.g. Singh. Having a top club on your football 'c.v.' can open a lot of doors.

Yes not a great starting debut against Fremad Amager (3rd). Subbed off at 65 mins with Helsingor 4-0 down.

Just subbed on at 76 mins, at 4-1. Final score 5-1.

Wilkins still absent.

Helsingor 5th.

Helsingør (6th) lose 1-2 at home to Esbjerg (2nd).

Both Just (subbed at HT) and McCowatt (subbed at 79 mins) start.

Just's replacement scores Helsingør's goal in the 94th min.

Promotion looks unlikely for Helsingør, with the top 2 sides already 15 points ahead of them.

One more league game, and then a winter break until mid February. Probably not worth a return to NZ, with a 2 weeks in MI over Xmas period.

They'd probably be looking further afield than that for MI. Booked up until early/mid January isn't it? Then likely a similar scenario on returning to Denmark (I have no idea what sort of system they've got in place to be fair).

Sounds like a lot of the fans would be happy just to survive in the 1st Division. They seem to understand where the club is trying to get to in terms of their longer term planning, even if they started the season off with a bit of a hiss and a roar.

Probably a few weeks wearing a mask around Spain or similar, before a club training camp somewhere warmest from mid Jan.

Maybe a winter roadie across Europe with some of the Torslanda crew, to see their old Ole mate Nando in Portugal.

35 yr old Jeppe Kjær, Helsingør's main goal scorer (9 goals in 13 games) is injured, and sounds like out for awhile.

So maybe no more playing as a left back for McCowatt when Danish 2nd tier resumes in a month.

From this week's Flying Kiwis. Helsingor in the blue & white

https://youtu.be/bkK2aE74NY0

"Hey that’s cool, Callum McCowatt scored in a friendly game against top flight club Nordsjælland (which translates to North Zealand, lol). FCH used two different teams in the respective halves with the only kiwi starting the first half being Sean Bright who is there trialling after impressing for Eastern Suburbs in the NZ Premiership lately. One of two triallists in the first half with another three plus an U19s player featuring in the second half which was when McCowatt came on. No Eli Just here... definitely not full strength at any point.

McCowatt’s goal came from a penalty after Oliver Kjærgaard was fouled, The keeper actually saved his spot kick as he went with the old panenka chip down the middle, a brilliant save reaching back with the left hand... but McCowatt followed it up to score at the second attempt. That was to make it 1-1 but the game got away from them after that and they eventually lost 4-2. McCowatt had a few other opportunities to score from open play which he couldn’t take full advantage of, such is life, although he did set up the second goal with a quick throw in. FCH plays another friendly on Thursday NZT against FC København which hopefully will also be livestreamed because Marko Stamenic is a good bet to start against his Ole Academy bros having started their most recent winter break friendly. The proper stuff doesn’t start up again until mid-February with FCH sitting eighth on the ladder after 16 matches."

Started in friendly against Superliga sude Copenhagen. Trialist Sean Bright came on at HT.

McCowatt features alot in early highlights (Helsingor in red), though match summary says he missed a few chances to score.

https://www.fck.dk/en/news/highlights-fck-3-2-fc-h...

https://fchelsingor.dk/2021/01/20/3-2-nederlag-til...

In any case, it was FC Helsingør who sat on much of the game at the start of the match, and especially a well-playing Callum McCowatt should probably have extended the lead once or twice.

Stamenic was listed on the bench for Copenhagen, and presume he got a run.

Neither Just or Wilkins were listed for Helsingor.

Played for Bafana Bafana senior team in 2017 & 2019. COSAFA Cup on both occasions.

He's South African.

https://us.soccerway.com/players/liam-jordan/39937...

He scored against Helsingor for HB Koge in December. Helsingor have lost their leading scorer (Kjær with 9) for the season. Eli Just is the next best with 3. So will need goals from Jordan & McCowatt.

Danish 2nd tier resumes 13th Feb.

Wonder how Sean Bright's trial went.
