Interesting in the Herald ...

If you are recording any of the remaining World Cup games you can breathe easy - Sky says it has fixed the error which meant customers missed the penalty shootout in the Croatia v Russia quarter-final. "Any recordings will capture the extended game," a spokesperson assured NZME. "Customers won't have to manually extend their recordings."

It's a streaming service available only to existing ESPN subscribers in the USA:

https://www.digitaltrends.com/movies/what-is-espn-...

"Watching live ESPN channels will still require a paid TV subscription (whether cable, satellite, or streaming service). The app acts as a gatekeeper by requiring users to sign in with their TV provider account to enable live viewing."

Have found FanPass mobile to be quite good - 14 a month. Can download plugins for KOBO which allow you to watch on computer/stream to TV

hot tip! all games are being streamed on the A-League's YouTube channel to any country that does not have an official broadcaster. So if you can VPN yourself to any country that is NOT....

China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, HK, Cambodia, Laos, East Timor, Macau, Myanmar, Vietnam, USA, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, UK, Portugal, Poland, Belgium, any African country, or International Waters (lol)

...You're good to go. I personally watched Adelaide-Sydney from the comfort of the Czech Republic last night.

So get this, Spark has done some sort of deal to do local broadcasting of the NZ National Hockey league.

The ISPS Handy Premiership clubs could really do with a deal like this considering Sky's ponzi scheme, typical..

Meanwhile at NZF HQ there has been fumbling through the review processes, finding CEO's, board members, forgetting about the fax, you know just typical NZF shark.

do you know more detail than what is covered in the article?

If not how do you know this deal won't be the same as the current ISPS deal - 1 game live per week and international games live?

Not really but competition is good for a change. Until we see how they broadcast the Hockey we can only wait and be the judge. Still would have been good to trail it for a season or even the chatham cup. Other sports have missed the boat aswell so I guess nothing really changes

Also it’d be good to not have to pay $100/month to watch 1 game per week coz bundled content.

except that's exactly what spark will be doing with their Lightbox offering, they'll do exactly what everyone else has done when they've won the rights from Sky. Charge $100+ for a season of one sport. Which means that if I want to watch the RWC, some cricket, football I'll be paying over $300 for the privilege and that doesn't include any other sports I may want to watch, or news, or cooking shows etc. Break that down and compare it to the $75/month sky charge me for access to all the sport and channels I want then I know where the better deal lies.

very true - and I feel for those fans but the reality is a lot of kiwi's watch several sports or several competitions for a few sports - I'm not saying SKY is the best way btw I just think this argument about people who have such a niche sporting interest is smoke and mirrors.

The deal will neary entirely involve broadcasting hockey internationals involving the men's and women's Black Sticks and is not really about coverage of the NZ National Hockey League for which there is a very small audience (that's just mentioned as an afterthought - you might get the odd game or the final).

That opinion piece you link has it wrong.

Spark have secured rights to FIH (International Hockey Federation) games.

Including Spark being host broadcaster for the FIH Pro Series home games involving NZ sides. They will sell these matches to other countries for a profit:

http://hockeynz.co.nz/News/spark-sport-secures-rig...

So, it's the equivalent of broadcasting All Whites and Football Ferns games and the FIFA World Cup and other FIFA tournaments rather than the ISPS Handa Premiership.

Spark would probably not be interested in investing in equipment and staff to broadcast live ISPS Handa domestic club matches on their own.

Not without a deal similar to the hockey whereby they could broadcast internationals, FIFA tournaments, Club World Cup, OFC Nations Cup etc.

NZ Football might still have to pay them for the national league broadcasts as with Sky.

Which is why Sky has a monopoly on football coverage (apart from the EPL) - they find it attractive to have rights to multiple football tournaments and leagues with some drawing bigger audiences like the FIFA World Cup and UEFA Champions League, while they can carry less-viewed events like the A-League too.

Great timing, I took advantage of this to watch last night's epic game (along with a few Women's T20 games).

I note that FanPass has an option for $16/month for iPhone/Android only; might be worth it just for watching the Nix.

Hmmm. There is a fellow who claims to have developed a plugin for the Kodi home theatre programme which will allow you to play Fan Pass Mobile on a desktop/TV - although he can't get Sky Sports 3 to work for some reason, and that's where they put most Nix games, lol

If they want to "Woo" me, and all existing customers still stuck on the minimum $49 per month contract, cut it by 50% forthwith and cut all the extra channe packages down to $10 permonth for each and watch not just us stick around, but attract others back. NZ people like convenience.

I'm just sick of the low framerate with all the choppiness, not great for watching football or any sport but theres not really an alternative. I think the satellite feed is also gimped to 1080i@50hz.

I wrote this under the 'Watching EPL live' forum topic, but relevant to this and even more so given the comments by the new CEO. Sounds like what the are proposing already exists with Kayo...

------------------------------------------------------------

It's not too relevant to watching EPL, as they don't have it, but I have signed up to Kayo Sports, which is the online arm of Foxtel AU, I use a Smart DNS service and pay the $25 AUD a month (free 2 week trial), but the offering is incredible, for example if you start watching a cricket game that has started, you can choose key moments, and it shows you replays of the wickets, or 6's etc. You can watch any current game 'Live' or 'from the start'.

It's light years ahead of anything i've seen. All Live and then On demand too, with a 'spoiler' or 'no spoiler' feature which turns the scores on or off on the initial front screen.

Hopefully they'll get the AU EPL rights back at some point, Optus have them currently, but Kayo have almost every other football league (A-League, Championship, Serie A, Bundeslgia, La Liga, MLS, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Ligue 1, and all AU internationals (men and women), and other Sth American leagues.

The HD quality is excellent too, matches the sky coverage. Speaking of Sky i have just cancelled their service yesterday.

Good to know, was going to sign up to a trial and use my VPN with it but then it wouldn't let me as I don't have an Aus mobile number.

Guess I'll just stick with fanpass + kodi.
