I know some of you out there must have one of these things. Which do you in your various opinions, think is the best one to buy. I'm thinking of getting one.

Well (obviously) have a good look around. Some have some really sh*t displays. We got a good as one through FlyBuys.

LG, here's a true story.  Couple of years ago my family & I went up to Akld & stayed in a motel on Great South Rd near Newmarket.  I have 2 cousins living up there so we decided to get together at the cousin who lives about 2 suburbs away from Ponsonby.  The other cousin lived on the on the Nth Shore at the time.  Her husband is really into his gadgets & has a Navman.  I was armed with a map of the city as I am not that familiar with Akld, I got to my cousin's place near Ponsonby no trouble.  My cousin & her husband, with the Navman, was late because they got lost.

Navman for the detail and it's designed and best bits made here in NZ.  And I reckon it's better at rural areas.
Tom Tom is fine but you have to keep upgrading.
Simple solution is an iPhone with the street and satellite map overlay, but like broadband, you pay for the amount of data used.
The blue dot follows you down the street about 5 seconds behind.
and the Search button is great for "where am I".  I tried this out in Paris the other week and it even worked in Timor of all places.

I've used both TomTom and NavMan and they both go okay.
 
Only advice I'd give you is to get one that lets you upgrade points of interest and maps.  Maps get out of date pretty quickly in some parts of the country, and being able to load additional points of interest makes the thing a lot more handy even in your home town.
 
Newer phones will also do the exact same job.  Worth considering whether you need two devices or can get a new phone that will also do your satnavery.

I can understand needing one if you are exploring Mongolia but do you really need one to when going to New World to buy some beer? Really?

My intention is mainly to explore the back roads of New Zealand without getting too lost.

Don't get me wrong LG, Navman & the like have there merits & I'm not rubbishing them.  I was telling an amusing story.

All are good providing you use them as "an aid" rather than an essential.  If you set the "speeding option" they might also save you a fine if you take notice of the warning.

Re: 'Forteans' comments about going to New World to get a beer... they are very good for that if you are in a town where you don't know where the nearest New World is, and I found mine very useful on a road trip round the South Island last year

They most certainly do! In many languages as well.

There's also a range of "famous people". I think only John Cleese and Homer Simpson are official. The fake ones are hilarious (in a sad way) including Darth Vader with a Welsh accent.

God knows what it would do if we were approaching a tight bend, I'd probably drive off the road in shock.

Mine has that function but she always says "Wrong Way - GO BACK!". Only happens on certain routes though...
