Rant over.any one fancy a kickabout?

I'm with you there Salmon, lets just play!!!!

Options facing everyone now:
1. Futsal. Great fun and more technically demanding
2. Lunchtime/Twilight 5 a-side soccer

From where i'm sitting the WCC needs to invest in artificial turf, however that might not be doable $$$ wise. I think clubs should seriously consider taking ownership for their own turf. Or rate payers need to get ready to loosen the purse strings.

Also mid week games should become a reality for juniors. In CHCH games between schools are played on Wednesday afternoon. This is when the juniors should play, or whatever day interschool sport is played midweek.

Personally summer footy is great, especially in the evenings after work. Tony and those 5 aside matches are great value.

Just thought I'd reproduce the letter to the editor from the Dompost today, seeing as it seems to relate to the subject in hand

The Dominion Post in Letters to the Editor | 12:00 pm 13 August 2008

A plea from a small lad

I write regarding the cancellation of football games in the capital over the past six weeks.
I play for the mighty Onslow Cluthas FC as a goalkeeper and am prepared to get dirty when theres a bit of mud on the ground, but our team have not played in at least six weeks and we are getting totally fed up.
Every week for as long as I can remember, Wellington City Council has declared the pitches too wet to play on. I think these are ridiculous decisions, particularly last weekend when the pitch seemed moderately dry.
I know the council will say it doesnt want pitches getting torn up, but let us please play at least one game.
I wouldnt be surprised if the Cluthas didnt play another game this season.
Im sure that lots of kids around Wellington feel the same way.
I think this has gone on long enough and on behalf of all players, can we ask for some game time at last?

I haven't read all the replys, but this is not a new problem, and has been going on for years. (bland statement!) If we're serious about playing the season without cancellations every year, Wgton need to develop 3 or 4 all weather soccer pitches, 2 in the Hutt, 2 in the Wgton/Porirua area, fully floodlit, change rooms the works. Fraser Park would be good start because you don't have a problem with the RMA, parking and residents. An ambitious project but would all the Wgton clubs be prepared to put politics aside (and the respective councils)and head down this path? This way you can play games midweek, all weekend and things will just tick along. Look at Hockey for example in Wgton, with a new facilty on Titahi Bay road. Are all the players prepared to pay $5 or $10.00 every time they take the field as a levy?
Every club here in Brisbane/Goldcoast has their own fully floodlit grounds (two) and sometimes 3 because they put the money they get into facilities. Capital Football need to get things rolling, if you don't ask you don't get, and this is the only way Football and the Council will beat this problem.

we have started a lobby group. Though it can only be councils which cough up the funds for this, so Wgtn and Hutt are separate issues.

I completely agree. As you can see from lower hutts recent form, this is down to the fact that we have a half court indoor field with the new (absolutely fantastic) turf. We have not yet missed a training where as all other clubs have struggled to train each week.

This indoor turf is also very close to covering its cost as it is booked out a lot of the time.

for those of you who want to know it costs around 1 million to build, lay and light a full size new artificial pitch(not like the hockey-these are the best in the world). However this is a cost that could be recouped. With the ability to play 10 + games on it a week (mid week, Saturday and Sunday) you could charge $10 a player per game. This would make back $45k a year for an 18 game season. Plus you could have a cafe/club room open all day for those days of play and that would make a fair bit more money than any other club room just due to the fact that parents/friends would know the game was going to be played for sure.

Why cant someone take this into their own hands and do it?

good idea. Anyone got a spare mil lying around? Plus another 1/2 mil for the land? and the $45k annual return you mention? Doesn't even cover the depreciation. Seriously, no one has this kind of loose change, and even if they did you still need the land (who owns that kind of accessible private land in Wgtn?) plus resource consent which involves all sorts of extra cost. Sorry to shoot you down on this Radioman but Feverish is right, councils need to provide the up front money and the land otherwise artificials in Wgtn are a non-goer.
