Really enjoyable chat, especially about how the Surman goal rated in comparison to other euphoric Nix moments. I'd put in a mention for Siggy's last gasp header to beat Adelaide in front of a big crowd in Chch. Not the same level of jeopardy in that game but still a fantastic moment.

Daring to listen to this finally. Jabbing the wound with some distance.
I’ve finally understood what Celine Dion and ilk were singing about.
‘It’s all that I wanted but we lost it somehow!’
I think with this week meant we’ve had more negative late show experiences than otherwise. But the positive ones are so damn strong! It’s still been an amazing year. And with one game to go we are still alive, not for scraping into the finals, but to win the whole damn competition. We’re going to feel much better with a little hindsight and a few great goals to round out the season.

And yet CCM have won the league twice doing just that, developing players and bringing in reasonable but affordable imports. Dome has always said they want to utilise the players they develop and get good money from them when the bids come in.....that doesnt stop the desire to win the league, and it can be done if you develop good young players and uitilise them for a couple of good seasons.
For ages CCM were cellar dwellers as they developed good players and sold em.

A bonus pod with Dale on newsable. You were great on it Dale.
MRP just shows Aussie refs feel above the rules and it matters more about who is upset and if they’re a Socceroo with a reputation for calmness. Or if a Sydney player says it then laws of the game go hang…

What’s your Nix legends XI, and does Rufer make the cut?
Who out of Paulsen, Surman, Old & Rufer (main contenders) should the Nix look to cash in on this off season? And who should they take their time over to sell if offers do come in?
ie who would be harder to replace/is highly valuable to the club, verus those who may already have close to ready made replacements coming through the club ranks. Also noting contract lengths, a likely reduction in the wages budget blah blah blah

I think market value increases for Old, Surman, and Paulsen if the club holds onto them another season. But, I also don't think we'd get fairly compensated for what we lose if we sold Rufer.
I'd say probably Surman or Old are most likely to be sold.

Hey troops, I just want to say thank you for another season of fun and interesting listening. Also thanks for the banners. Shame the "To" came off but the intetions were honourable and good. Next season I think the first home game banner could read "Unfinished Business". We were at the tip and didn't make it, next season, lets see the job through.
I have always said to aim to be number 1, not try to finish in the top 6. Chiefy is of a similar position. Aim to be the best.
So thanks anyway. Enjoy the off season, this could get interesting.

Doesn't look like that would fit on the banner. This could work though:

Another great Pod, I appreciate your guys's ability to put into words how we all felt throughout the match - even the parts I wish to forget!
Also I want to say I agree with the comment about Old for Victory's winner - In the moment I too blamed Surman for it, but in the replays right after the goal I noticed that it was Ben Old who was on Ikonomides and lost him, and Surman was just making a last moment attempt to fix Old's lapse - Although to counter that I do question why Ben Old was given the duty of marking one of their biggest threats at that moment, and it probably really should have been Surman on him in the first place.
Anyway - Cheers for a great season of pods, they are a great listen every week and i appreciate the time you put in. I'm looking forward to your end of season chat with Domey and hopeful that you manage to get one with Chiefy too

I think the goal will stand the test of time- it is a high water mark of Uffie and Chief’s seasons. My celebrations here compared to Winston’s first goal at the 2010 World Cup. It was a stunner.
I think you’re selling OVH short- it’s a headed pass, not an aimless flick on, and also the way it came in the game exemplified this teams never say die attitude. We’ve taken late points time and again this season.
To see Kosta being Zawada’s target man, let alone such an accomplished one and to see him springboard up, soar and make such a good header Zawada can hit it first time.
Watch the celebrations, watch Rufer with Zawada.
It won’t be remembered because we triumphed, but it’s a goal that captures a team and a club banging on the door relentlessly, everyone doing everything they can and a team that won’t be denied.
Given Izzo’s form (and ours at pens too) it seemed like we weren’t favourites there and I think in 8 halves of football between Vic and us there’d been 4 goals or something so it was also far from a guarantee that we could score again. We hoped we’d get momentum, but I think this and the amazing nature of Traore’s goal mean we can look back and realise the longer the game went the more it favoured Victory. Though a shoot out with that crowd would have been amaze balls.

It was the most mad celebration I've been at. I wasn't there for Ifill's winner/run back towards YF. But I was there for Bahrain and the win over the Jets 3-1 in ET.
There is some recency bias at play but I think several factors make the Zewada equaliser stand out for me, in no particular order:
- a lot of us had given up true hope, and it sort of came "out of nowhere" in that most of us didn't truly expect we would be able to equalise with the almost non-existent time remaining
- the euphoria was magnified because it gave us HOPE, and BELIEF that it would be the turning point of the match
- Fallon's header was an incredible moment too but was soon after softened by some anxiety knowing that any scoring draw from that point onwards would see us OUT
- Pasty's save was great too, and included a huge component of relief due to the scoring draw permutation
The other moments will be more historic but Zewada's equaliser felt the most wild.

Looking forward to hearing Domey's views on the season, always cool to hear about it from the club's perspective
Always good to have Dome on. It was interesting discussion on the club's finances. Seems positive.
As always good to hear from 'all is well in the world' David Dome.
Shout out to the selfless Jack Duncan.
Be interesting to see what happens with the Academy team, and the 'next level' plans to get the younger players more game time. Entering a Trans Tasman comp (NPL league), like the Warriors reserve team do?? Annual tour of China??

Agreed about Zawada's goal having an "out of nowhere" feel about it. Izzo's body language said that too.
There was only one other goal that I could compare it to, and that was the 2000 Euro championships final, when against all odds France equalised in 94th minute through Sylvain Wiltord against Italy. France looked dead and buried until Wiltord and Trezeguet were introduced off the bench, and they each in turn scored "out of nowhere" to win the game. Wiltord's late goal was against all odds.
And yes, Pires moving the ball forward on the left flank and passing to Trezeguet to score the winner looked for all the money like something Ben Old would do.

It reminds me a bit of a goal in last years Chatham Cup final. The Melville goalkeeper scored in the 98th to send it to extra time but then lost on penalties in the end.
Great to hear from Domey.
But ... Domey says the club wants to continue its academy pathway into the first team, yet also wants to win the league.
Surely these are conflicting aims?
You can't win the league without experience, and you can't gain experience if your best prospects are bought by overseas clubs at the end of a breakout season.
Would have been nice for the pod to push back on this point.
Otherwise great interview.

Interesting to hear different opinions.
I want to be that optimistic too! :-)
But if we sell Paulsen, Old and Surman I can't imagine us doing as well next year. Those three all had a reasonable amount of first team time before this season and apart from Kelly-Heald and Hughes no other academy players seem ready to replace them.
(yes Conchie could but he plays in a different position).

Oh I'm certainly nervous about the players we are losing next year for sure.
But if we keep successfully developing and sending players to have careers overseas, then other promising players will wanna come play here.
We get to be a financially viable club that players wanna succeed at. Hopefully that scores many many silverwares.
