in regards to Residence..it really depends, there are several categories. I think it's at least 3 years if you're working..or perhaps he should marry a kiwi chick [whistles and acts as if he didn't know anything]..that will speed it up!!However, there is always a special clause for professional sportsmen...so i'm sure it could be done pretty quickly.Think how cool if we played out WC qualifier playoff at the RoF with our beloved Daniel on the pitch...Full credit to all those who resigned. I'm very happy about the Sea Captain (Siggy), Locky-head, and of course DANIEL. I reckon Tim Brown might have ripped us off a little, given his form and age..but hey, he can be pretty useful at times

5 years is the answer. Fifa changed the rule last year.

thanks tony

i wondered if what happenned to jonas salley at adelaide in regards to his autralian residency and foreign player status would also effect daniel.

good to have that cleared up

Daniel has become a New Zealand Citizen today.

Congrats to the new Kiwi all rounds.

Actually that means that we have both Gao and Daniel import places are nowopen for business. How many imports (non-NZ and non-OZ) are we allow in the team in the A-league was it 3 or 4?AllWhitebelievr2008-12-01 23:46:08

How has Daniels been opened? Another 3 years I think we have to wait for.

Daniel is now a New Zealand citizen as of 1st Dec 2008 (i.e. yesterday) so he goes under being a New Zealander as well as Brazilian in player registration but in main it means the foreign import place is now open.

We need a young striker that can do things (but also may be available to be a kiwi later on)AllWhitebelievr2008-12-02 00:49:08

Hmm interesting. Obviously FIFA don't place any rules to stop this happening I suppose there is very few leagues in the world that have this restriction however.

Yeah, according to Jonas Salley's wikipedia page he fled the Ivory Coast in 2006 and came to Australia.  The best part of one of those years was spent in NZ and it states that he aims to make the Australian world cup team.  So, if what is on the page is to be assumed as correct he will have been in Australia for less than 5 years and in the national team so there isn't any reason why the same should not apply to Daniel. loyalgunner2008-12-02 01:08:22

The FFA import player in a squad rule is local association rule for A-league.

FIFA is looking at the import player rule for clubs with the 6+5 rule.

6+5 rule:

[quote]At the beginning of each match, each club must field at least 6 players eligible to play for the national team of the country of the club. However, there is no restriction on the number of non-eligible players under contract with the club, nor on substitutes to avoid non-sportive constraints on the coaches (potentially 3+8 at the end of a match).

They want the 6+5 rule but that would be in conflict with the restraint of trade laws as players had football ply as a trade. I.e. it is a matter of International employment law. The import player rule is usually a domestic rule by the local Association and also a rule which belongs with the local confederation in regards to Champion League. The 6+5 rule has hit a snag with the european parliament but it was voted in FIFA Congress by majority (155 yes 5 no) its meeting in Sydney on 29 and 30 May 2008,. The rule violates both Article 39 of the EC Treaty and the Bosman ruling and so it been described as illegal by the European Union and was rejected by the European Parliament on May 9.

5 import spots for next season I believe, that could cover 1 or 2 of the strikers we need, the creative midfielder we need leaving 2 or 3 spots for other imports, to fill in positions like DM, another AM and even 'keeper if we decide against a kiwi (g Imra-ay/Spoonmeister)

Salley became eligible to represent Australia when the rule still said 3 years. The rule was changed to 5 afterwards.

[quote]1. Starting multiple threads. Before you start a new thread please check pages 2 and 3 of a forum or use the search function at the top of the page to see if such a topic already exists. Often what you are asking will already have been covered somewhere else. Please stick to one thread per topic, this is especially important around comments on each match. Also, read the FAQs, your answer may be there.

Paston is not nailed down yet? With Moss going we need to confirm that one PDQ.

Re: Jonas Salley, he is no longer an import for Adelaide but he wasn't able to play in the Champions League from memory...I guess different rules must have applied.
