The NRL is also a shark load more flush with cash than the APL/A League owners.

I'm guessing the NRL is probably paying a bit chunk, if not all of the Warriors's relocation costs. Plus given the big Warriors following in SE Queensland, they probaly would draw crowds there not too much smaller than what they regularly draw at Mt Smart. All the Sydney NRL clubs also have reasonable fan bases in SE QLD, ie lots of ex Sydneysiders living in QLD, to swell 'home Redcliffe' crowds for Warriors when hosting Sydney teams.

That's very different to the Nix drawing what 1,000-1,500 in the Gong (or where ever they start this new season in Aussie), and Welnix owners by sound of it forking out most of the relocation costs. I imagine they would want to get back to Welly, as soon as any 2 way TT bubble sans MIQ is open again. Similar with Breakers I'm guessing.

Last season there were a whole lot of exceptions made for Perth Glory. Late start to the season (3 weeks after other teams if I remember) then they were allowed to play a whole bunch of away games to start there campaign so they didn't lose any home games.
Might require similar for both Perth and Nix this coming season.

Gotta get the rest of the Aussie states to open up before they worry about NZ mate

Well A League are ruling out a hub(s) so you will have to have interstate travel.

If anything it could be teams from those states, with little/no Covid (so Roar, Glory & Adelaide) who like Nix have to relocate to NSW or VIC (where combined 8 of the league's teams are) early season. Like yes Glory last season.

But you currently have VIC & NSW AFL teams, playing finals interstate in Tas, SA, QLD & WA. So sporting team travel exemptions are already possible within Aussie, and will only improve with increasing vaccination numbers.

How the Nix's season pans out now, will have more to do with what NZ Govt decides upon, than what's happening within Aus. Aus is moving towards a 'living with Covid' model. That is now a given - if yes earlier than they really desired.

Pignata said the A-League won't do hubs, but the boss of the APL said they're taking a "never say never" approach.

Still obviously a bit tricky with the various different state borders, and how they currently differently treat folks flying in from NZ.

ABs didn't do hard quarantine in Perth (maybe was hotel-train-hotel scenario), but Sam Whitelock after the birth of his latest kid has flown into Brisbane, and is having to do 2 weeks solitary hard hotel quarantine. And he's come from ChCh, which hasn't seen a community Covid case since forever.

Sounds like a decision on where/when A League will start is about 2-3 weeks away (end of Sept), with a mid Nov start date now mentioned. Nix could fly over a 3-4 weeks beforehand (so early-mid October), to get some proper warmup games (FFA Cup?), plus then have any new visa signings (also Piscopo & Pennington??) join them there.

Seems no point now having Piscopo & Pennington fly into NZ for 2 weeks MIQ. Same any new visa signings.

NSW is now at 78% of it's adult popn (above age 16) now minimum one dose vaccinated. Even allowing for a tapering off in vaccination rates, NSW will highly likely be in range 80-85% fully vaccinated by A League kickoff - be that October 31st or few weeks later in mid November.

A few weeks ago I would have ruled out the Nix returning to the Gong, but now it's looking like a pretty strong choice. At 80-85% fully vaccinated adult popn, professional sport will be happening, maybe even with crowds. Nix could be based at the Gong, and just play the other 5 NSW teams to start the season like the last. Then at that 80-85% vaccination rate, wouldn't surprise to see the NSW-VIC border reopened. VIC is currently 65% adult popn min single dose, and like NSW cranking up it's vaccine efforts as it moves to 'living with Covid'.

Once the NSW-VIC border reopens that's another 3 teams (total 9 incl) that could be having a normal H&A season.

So if the Gong is the cheapest relocation option for Nix, and having been there before and having existing relationships etc etc - you think it would be the cheapest - makes some sense to return there. Plus the new women's W League team was always planned to be based in the Illawara from memory, so would seem to be the best spot to base the whole 'club in exile' again.

I'd rule out QLD. On the brink of a new lockdown here again in SE QLD, with 5 new community cases, and a low 56% single dose vaccination rate (lowest rate in the country).

Lastly as the NZ Govt seems pretty firm on not reopening the TT bubble with specific states, ie only with Aussie as a whole, doesn't seem to matter what state the Nix are based in, re their eventual return to NZ when the TT bubble reopens. Could be NSW with Covid in the community, or WA with maybe no Covid, it's likely irrelevant.

Come to the Sunshine Coast Uffie.

https://www.wellingtonphoenix.com/news/catching-coach-ufuk-talay

What is the best-case scenario for the Wellington Phoenix next season with regards to where the Club plays its home matches and where it’s based from in order to be part of the A-League competition?

Obviously we want to play games in New Zealand and at Sky Stadium next season, and the Club is doing everything it can to make that happen. What happens in New Zealand, Australia and with the Trans-Tasman bubble over the next 4-5 months plays a big part of this, but home is where we want to be.

I don’t think the plan is – if we are going back to Australia for a short time – to go back to Wollongong.

It’ll always come down to what’s best for the Club and what’s best for the team, so there’s a few options for the Club that are being looked at this stage, but nothing concrete so I’m sure in the next few weeks – once the A-League knows what is happening from a competition perspective – we’ll know what we’ll be doing and where the teams will be based, whether it be in a hub or in another state.

I’m sure we’ll have more clarity in the coming weeks, but the most important thing if do have to hub in Australia for the short-term, is that the facilities that we go to and the training ground that we train on is up to standard – as we’re training on it every day. The boys need to be happy and comfortable where they’re working.

Things change very quickly, but at the end of the day, there's several places that the Club – and the wider competition – are looking at in terms of where we could be based next season.

My reading of this is that wanting "the training ground that we train on [to be] up to standard" is the key reason to not go back to Wollongong, but that this doesn't rule out other options in Australia.

You may well be right re Nix not happy with training facilities at the Gong, though I think the Welnix owners will rightly be focused on the cheapest option.

Plus Nix W League team is now an extra factor since Uffie made those comments, which were also made in a time (much lower vaccination numbers) when the roadmap out of the pandemic was less clear in NSW.

Anyway I guess we will find out in next few weeks where the Nix are heading to.

Good news in SE QLD today, no new community cases, after 5 yesterday. Amazing how lucky we seem to be here, touch wood.

Wonder if last paragraph might have some influence on where Nix look to base themselves in Oz. Leaves open some possibility of at least hosting the likes of Glory, Adelaide and maybe Roar in NZ late 2021/early 2022 - even if the Nix themselves don't fully return to NZ until a full TT bubble is open later on.

So pretty much same as what happened with Western United & Glory games end of last season. Again you'd likely get some bumper ROF/Eden Park crowds at least.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/news/300409869/transtasman-bubble-shut-until-november--govt-adds-emergency-flight-home

Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson said vaccination rates would be crucial when the trans-Tasman bubble was next reviewed in late November – but could give no guarantee it would resume before Christmas.

“Sitting here from the perspective of today, it doesn't feel like a very likely outcome that we would start again in eight weeks, but we want to make sure that we've got the ability to reassess it then.”

Robertson said the Government would consider if the bubble could reopen to certain states with a strong track record of containing Covid, such as Western Australia, when it was reviewed in November.

Kick off 21st Nov verus MAC. Playing the 5 other NSW based sides until January, when hopefully the team can return to Welly, if TT bubble resumes.

Where in NSW team will be based still to be confirmed.

NSW at about 84% adult popn min single dose vaccinated. So on target to hit 90% vaccinated. Tracker predicts 80% adults (age 16+) double vaccinated sometime 18-23 October. 28% of 12-15 age bracket already had one jab in NSW. So I'd say good chance League will kick off 21st Nov with masked crowds.
