Looks like we are in for a 30th October start to the new season.

It will still be 26 rounds & is set to include FIFA windows. There was some talk about the Finals format changing, with home & away fixtures for some of the play offs.

I wonder if Morrison/Dome/Talay has thought about loading fixtures early or late to avoid having many games in January.  The OFC qualifiers are reported to be in the Middle East and if quarantine is still  in place for overseas arrivals by January, it could create some issues. If that’s the case, Phoenix (and a couple other teams) could be without players for 4-6 weeks even. Could theoretically lose Sail, Lewis, Waine, Payne, Fenton, even McGarry, Sutton or Rufer if they have good form.

We will be unlikely to get European players as from memory January isn’t a FIFA window. If that’s the case I am quite worried what sort of squad we could actually get for this tournament.

Apart from England, virtually all the Euro leagues have a winter break in January. For at least the first half of the month. Often they have club training camps in the Middle East.

Throw in the MLS/USL guys, plus Joe Bell, Matt Garbett, Max Mata etc being in their off seasons - and it should be a relatively strong AWs team. Dyche may even agree to release Wood for any OFC tourney semi final/final. Would greatly help if the tourney is in say UAE (7 hour flight from London) as has now been mooted, as opposed to 20+ hours away in NZ/Islands.

Lastly is a possibility that by January, fully vaccinated people returning to NZ/Aus, from specifically listed countries with low Covid risk, may just need to home quarantine for 1 week as opposed to 2 weeks MIQ. UAE for example already has 60% of it's popn fully vaccinated (2 doses). So that would benefit any A League guys called up to a January OFC tourney for AWs.

A 'possibility'. But this idea has certainly been mentioned in Australia.

If you were superstitious then Mt Etna erupting in the shape of a Phoenix just before Italy won the euros would be a good omen for the upcoming Nix season.

Otherwise, it's a good picture to fire up with.

Hopefully if that's the case the league will support them.

But, also it's a reasonable scenario that the first couple of months of the season are played in Australia with the remainder played in NZ when vaccination levels are higher.

yeah I'd expect us to be in Aus until December maybe. Full vax rates are at 10% and 12% (NZ and Aus) so not high. NZ expecting to be fully vaxed by end of year, but it looks like Aussie is a little unclear on the vax messaging.
Could well be a disaster if the nix have to be based in Aus for the full season and the league cant afford to offer support.

People in Aussie are now getting totally sick & tired of these lockdowns. Esp VIC & NSW where they have dragged on for weeks. Luckily in SE QLD, a hard and fast acting 3-5 day lockdown seems to always do the trick (like Auckland earlier this year).

Australia's Hotel MIQ system is failing time and again, with healthy people picking up the virus from Covid infected people in the hotels, then being released into the community after not being detected as positive with their day 12 test. In Aus infected and healthy people can sometimes be neighbours in the hotels, and the Delta strain seems to drift in the air and infect people metres away, hours later. In NZ they either take infected people to a separate hotel in Auckland (Jet Park?), or to a whole separate floor (other NZ city MIQ hotels). Also greatly helps that the army run the NZ system, not so in Aus.

Good news is that Aus Govt has now slashed by 50% arrivals into the stretched MIQ hotel system here. So that should reduce problems. Also vaccinations are going to seriously crank up over the next few months. So come October is going to be improved, but lockdowns will still be a risk. Eventually the state governments will need to make hard decisions, with no more lockdowns and tolerating Covid in the community. That is likely end of this year. There could be riots if lockdowns persist into the Christmas holiday period, and the majority of people being vaccinated say no more.

Re the Nix the NZ Govt's Covid strategy & the Trans Tasman bubble a whole other story.

Fingers crossed vaccinations reach the necessary level to keep everyone safe. End of the year is supposed to be full vax for both countries so in theory no lockdowns if a case appears in the community - hopefully having 85%+ vaccinated will mean the Delta variant is kept away.

How do you measure fully vaccinated? Like Niue at 97%?

Is it more like the UK, that is almost fully open at about 69% popn min 1 dose, and 53% 2 doses (ie fully vaccinated) - from stats I see?

And yes at current vaccination rates, NZ & Aus are both a look way off, whatever measure you use. But the plan (and apparently vaccination orders have been confirmed), is to seriously ramp up vaccination supplies & rates. Then I guess alot will depend on the joe public's motivation to get a jab.

The talk coming out of the Aus Govt, is that it will all be about 'modelling' as to when state borders will just be left open & lockdowns cease. ie at what point will enough folks be vaccinated, that the transmission of Delta or whatever strain is around will be low enough, that hospital admissions/deaths will be basically at an 'acceptable number'. Which is pretty much how any health system operates in a first world country anyway, with or without Covid.

NZ has said we want everyone that wants to be vaccinated to be vaccinated by the end of the year, targeting 90%. If you look at the ramp up that Canada had it's possible, especially if we turn our stadiums into vaccination centers like they did in Canada (and they're trialing one here I believe).

What we've also said though is we want to treat covid like the Measles where we stamp it out when it emerges. So, there might not be lockdowns but there will be isolation and controls if this is the case.

Nothing new there, that's how its been carried out across Europe.  90% target rate is very hopeful given Europe (EU, UK etc) have not vaccinated under 18s yet which is why the number only sits in the 60% range of the total population.

Would be a real kick in the teeth for the club and the club management after a strong back half to finish last season, backed up by the fans here in Wellington & Auckland coming out in force for both of our home games.

Fingers crossed for some sense of normality for the upcoming season, but sadly, it doesn't look promising...

Shark situation, but would love to see them based on Sunshine Coast, QLD where I am at the moment. That's if they have to do an Aussie hub again (at least to start the season). Good stadium, and sports precinct setup at Kawana, Sunny Coast.

QLD & WA doing a pretty good job with Covid situation. QLD has shut border with NSW today. Be nice if TT bubble stayed open with QLD & WA.

But I guess if say Nix were in QLD, who do they play apart from Roar & Glory - if VIC, NSW & SA are all still in lockdowns come October. Can see SA coming out of lockdown in 1-2 weeks, but bigger states esp NSW who knows now.

NRL teams have all now moved to QLD. October still a fair way away but season could start with an all teams hub in QLD.

Surely they all need to re group in NZ now. Pre season here, try and organise some meaningful practice games in September and plan for a camp in Aus in October.  Reassess from that point.
I'm confident Aus will get things back under control covid wise.
Next issue for me is how Aus and NZ view there long term strategy. Once vaccine rates are up, How and when do they adopt a live with it approach like UK. And will NZ and Aus do this collectively. I guess by that time we will get a good picture of what's gone on in the UK with this approach.

The problem is Morrison - he's always pushed for the "live with it" approach, it's just (most of) the state premiers have disagreed.

The start of the season, now looks highly likely to be disrupted. Maybe another all teams hub in QLD to start with, or similar. Victoria even. But way way too early, to say will be worse scenario than that at the moment.

Aussie is doing 1M vaccinations a week now, so about 12M more vaccinations by end of October - not allowing for any increase (which is planned) in vaccination rates. They have already done 10.5M jabs, so lets say 22-23M jabs by end October, or for simplicity 11-11.5M people double vaccinated. Aus pop over age 14, is about 20M - so you would be talking around 55-60% popn above age 14, double jabbed by end Oct.

I've made some assumptions, and next few months esp in NSW won't be great, but situation won't look so grim by the time A League is close to kicking off.

Fair enough!!

Things look pretty shark in NSW. Their lockdown could go on for months, with other states keeping borders hard shut.
New cases in SA & VIC are all being traced, to known exposure sites, so reasonable hope, they will come out of lockdown in next 1-3 weeks. They have done it before recently. VIC have learnt the lesson of previous failures.
QLD 1 case, WA no cases - so life goes on, though in QLD we continue to wear masks outside the home as we should. Both states have since the pandemic started, taken a hardline with quick border closures etc, and have handled Covid well. The risk is some fudgeers sneaking across the NSW/QLD stateline with the virus. It's a large border.

Really who the fudge knows, but this far out from a late October A League start date, having all the A League teams relocate to QLD (as NRL & AFL are doing now) for a hub to start the season, looks one prospect. Victoria may have things under control, but going on history likely higher risk of another outbreak.

Then when the states & Federal Govt finally agree, on basically a date when borders will no longer be closed, lockdowns will cease, and the virus will be 'tolerated in the community' - you move to a normal H&A season, if not before.

At least the APL has plenty of time to plan ahead, unlike NRL & AFL who are caught up in all this mid season.

Should add I'm age 52, and I'll be double vaccinated by next Saturday. Mate in Melbourne age 48, is already double jabbed. Neither of us are essential/health workers.

Thousands of people protesting lockdown and vaccinations in Sydney and Melbourne aren't going to help stop the virus in time for the start of the season.

Once the adult populace gets to say 70% vaccination rate, yes people will protest against continued lockdowns, esp if you are in that 70%, and your business is going to the wall. It's time then to start looking to live with this thing. I reckon that will be the situation around Christmas period in Aus, when any further lockdowns would be hugely unpopular. But I'm talking a measured opening up, with continued mask wearing etc etc. Just no more lockdowns.

But until that time most folks will realise lockdowns are a necessary evil. Lockdown compliance by Victorians (who have been through this more than anyone in Aus), last week or so has been high. But as NSW is showing it only takes a misbehaving small minority and poor state Govt leadership to screw things up. Lockdown hard & early, is the proven way to go.

Any future (I'm talking 3-5 months away) lockdown reluctance, is very different to anti vax fools, protesting about getting a jab, this whole Covid thing being a hoax blah blah, or any of the other nut job theories out there. You're anti vax and you get sick, when things do open up long term, your fudgeing problem.

Adelaide will be out by Wednesday, it was only meant to be a week if everyone did the right thing, and sure enough cases have dropped back to 1 per day.

An Adelaide hub for the A-League would be perfect for me!! The other alternative is a FIFO route like the AFL have done coming into SA.

Ouch, early morning hangover post and I accidentally sent a report instead of a reply - sorry mods.

Anyway, well off topic, but NZ has spent about 11% of GDP on stimulus, compare that to Japan at 55%, the US at 27%, Sweden at 25%, Australia at 15%, the UK at 12%... You can see that we've over performed compared to stimulus spend.

Another way to look at it is the deficits that we've run up to pay for this one off stimulus package are about the same, as a percentage of GDP, as what a country like the US runs up in a normal year just to pay for their bills.

Add to that the fact that we came in with low debt loads and still leave the pandemic with some of the lowest debt in the OECD and you can see that our strategy is working pretty well.

What we've seen so far is the NZ government is willing to live with a bit of risk with the travel bubble and tolerates a little bit of community spread as long as it's contained, I'd expect that re-opening it will be a priority to states which have covid under control. The problem for the Nix is they'll have to have contingency plans - have Gong on call in case the bubble closes and also air nz ticket line on speed dial. It also makes selling home tickets challenging, they don't want to be in a situation like the warriors were and having to cancel games because the travel bubble closes.

By my count there's 12 Nix or former Nix players at the Olympics across two teams, that shows just how important they are and I hope NZ football and the league support them.

If I was the Nix I'd be making plans about a new base in Aus, not the Gong. Really it's up to the APL to be working on a contingency plan for season start. A season starting hub in VIC, QLD, SA or WA looks best bet this far out. VIC or QLD probably most logical.

Or you try 2 hubs to maximise crowds at season start. 3 VIC teams, Nix, Adelaide & Glory in one VIC/SA hub. 5 NSW teams & Brisbane in a QLD hub. Then you review it after a full round of 5 games each team, which takes you to early/mid December. Something like that.

Things are tracking pretty well in VIC & SA re Covid with both those states likely to come out of lockdown in next 1-2 weeks. All states will keep a hard border with NSW & do their damnest to keep the virus out. NSW is the outlier and looks like remaining a problem for months ahead. A state within a state.

I think JA needs to look to reopen the TT bubble with all states except NSW, before that 8 week deadline. Lets see what happens next 3-4 weeks.
