Not convinced Krishna is the way to go and doubt very much if Rojas wants to come back to Wellington. While i was gutted he left also not convinced Steinmann is a good use of an import spot. Dont have any preferences but doubt there will be much action short term as the the team and coaching staff all need a well deserved break. Have faith that Talay will at last be able to assemble the team he wants a nice mix of import experience and some really exciting Kiwi young talent.

Not strictly about incoming players but I note Van Hattum has quite a long contract. I wonder if we'll see more of him like we did Waine a couple of seasons ago. They surely must think he's a decent prospect who can both play his part and potentially be sold on in a year or two if he does well.
Also I wonder what Waine will want to do. He turned down offers from the Championship last year and I don't think he will be happy with how often he was played. It felt like he was chucked out after that penalty miss/argument with Piscopo. He acts as a consummate professional, always giving 100% and never appearing to be upset at being subbed off or not played at all, so it's all speculation. But you couldn't begrudge him if he was thinking the grass was greener elsewhere.
Obviously Hoops is gone. Be great to keep Sandoval but not sure what the financial implications are there. I'd love to keep McGarry too. I think he can do better if he has better luck with injuries in the future. Sotirio, if he goes to the Jets, will be sorely missed. Yes he is not the tidiest of strikers but he had a good season, put quote a few away, provided assists and is a bullet.

Can't see Reno stay and I'm not too fussed to see him go. On his day he's such a good player. However he's very injury prone and tends to slow the game down. Also he gives up possession so often...again he is a classy player but is he worth the wages he'd likely ask for? With him, Hoops and possibly Sandoval going we'd have some spare change to throw around...

Also, if he doesn't ask for the moon, keep Fenton. And maybe try and play him in his natural position for a change.

Two more points!
1. Sail. Will he stay or will he go? We know the club has been hurting financially and I'd  understand if they sold him for a fee. In that case, I'd be happy with Paulsen but only if he had a decent back up option, someone of proven quality in the A-League who's either nearing retirement or hoping to challenge Alex for the #1 jersey.
2. Rufer. Let's not forget we won't see Rufer back for quite some time and Lewis/Pennington + Sutton as a back up/Academy kids won't be enough. I'd love to sign a decent visa CMF though from Uffie's comments I think they're mainly looking at a striker for now.

Interesting times. Long off season so let's see what gems Gillie, Uffie and the team can uncover this time! Get watching these highlight reels peeps! Maybe shout them a Euro holiday too around September to go scout some players live!

It's hard to have an opinion on who we should keep without knowing wages. Sandoval for example is good enough for the A League but I wouldn't want to keep him if he is on big wages, likewise a few others such as Piscopo.

Speculating visa players is pretty tough, as it’s all basically needle-haystack stuff. Maybe I’m underestimating other’s knowledge because of my own, but I hadn’t heard of the majority of visa players we’ve had, and the higher profile names will probably have offers from several places.

Auckland based guys who might be worth a run would be guys like Kilkolly (genuinely, he outscores Grieve), Kaltack (as per usual), Conor Tracey (NZ age-group experience and ahead of Cam Brown), Mike Den Heijer (pro environment experience and Akl Utd POTS), Sam Brotherton maybe, but I heard he has some bozo moments at City and might have checked out of pro football. Can’t say much about the younger guys up here, but we’ll get a better idea when the OFC U19 Championship comes in around August.

Overseas NZ players are hard to guess. I like Deklan Wynne, and the Phoenix can always use another Westlaker on top of Ben Old, but he’s been in the US (+ Vancouver) 6 or 7 years now. He’s playing every minute for Detroit who are doing well in USLChamp, so hard to know whether he’d want to come play backup for Sutton. Collier would be in the same boat, though Musa was at the Phoenix years ago so might have unfinished business, but he might be passed it.

Wilkins might fancy it, he’s in the Danish third tier and is from Wellington, but he’s got a contract until 23/24. If we beat Costa Rica Reid might want to keep fit for the WC, so what better place than to go full circle, though he might retire if we lose, given he hasn’t had a club since end of last season. Nikko Boxall is 30, off-contract in November, and has been overseas for a decade but over several countries, so he might fancy it too.

Marinovic, Crocombe, Redmayne, Izzo and Thomas are the off contract, experience kiwi and Aussie keepers. Mambo is a free agent, Ben Kennedy and Ivan Necevski are playing NPL. Vedran is also off contract but no thanks.

- Marinovic won’t come back
- Crocombe is a chance but probably happy starting at Grimsby
- Redmayne could happen but wouldn’t want him on big money
- Izzo is too good and will probably aim for a European first division
- Thomas is going to WSW
- Mambo is okayish but would he want to warm our bench again?
- Ben Kennedy sucks
- Is Necevski up to it? Genuinely asking, I haven’t watched him play.

Could maybe coax the likes of Federici, Galekovic, Mossy or Tamati Williams out of retirement with a player/coach gig now that Gothy’s gone - provided they want and are up for it.

Wootton seems to be the calming experienced defender. Was really impressed with Nikko, but think he’d be competing for Wootton’s spot in a kind of defence leader type role. Talay will want a back two with left and right feet if possible, and we have Surman and Laws who have had good seasons.

15 players signed up from the get go for next year is a very solid place for us to be. 11 of the 15 being Kiwi's too!

Have we ever had such a high percentage of New Zealanders signed to the club on pro deals? Because I'd wager that it'd be right up there as it currently stands, not withstanding some speculated overseas interest in a few players of ours *Looking at you Oli 👀*

Of course that will change as we go into the world's longest off season, but there is no reason to suspect there won't be more Kiwi's on board come kick off 22/23.

Of the names being bandied about on here, I like the thought of at least having a look at the likes of Schrijvers, Schnell, Kalua, Munford and Jelacic to go with the 3 import slots that we definitely need to be filling. Although all those names above should definitely be trialled first.

Think it'd be worthwhile dipping our toes to see if Musa wants to come back home as Cover for Rufer too (versatility as a DM and CB). Currently not getting much game time stateside, but has built a decent career in the USL and flitting between there and the MLS. Could be a goer, but it depends on if he wants to leave America to play.

Do we make a play for fringe All Whites like De Jong or Collier? Personally I'd take Collier in a heartbeat, but I'm guessing if he keeps up his form in the USA, then there is every likelihood he'll extend his stay in Texas.

I'm just going to throw a name out there too - Noah Billingsley anyone? I couldn't tell you where in the world he is at the minute, but I know he's a free agent, and if we let Fenton go then he'd have as good a shot as any at RB (along with potentially Kalua and an already signed Elliott)

I won't speculate on the imports as it's too early on to be throwing hopeful names about, but I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for some quality if it becomes available.

Very left field suggestion, but what the hell has happened to Noah Billingsley? Good enough to get drafted to Minnesota and play a few MLS games for them in 2020.

Apparently super fit (broke the fitness records at Minny in pre season), and skilled enough to play up front in his early days, then reinvented himself as a RB.
But he struggled last year at Phoenix in the USL. From memory he did get a bad case of Covid. Has he given up on football early? A few young Kiwis seem to go that way stateside (Colvey, Ashworth, Stu Holthusen, Cory Brown, Ronan Wynne, even Tim Brown to a point)

I'd definitely let Fenton go. There comes a time when even your loyal one club stalwarts have to move on. He hasn't played up further up the field for years. His position is RB, and he was down to about 4th-5th in the Nix pecking order by season end.

Uffie showed very little faith in him at the back end of the season. Must be some younger player out there worth a punt, as RB squaddie.

Honestly, Laws was very good this season, and is a very decent shout at midfield backup if needed - given Surman's form if one of our starting midfield are out I would have Laws ahead of Pennington (who isn't too bad, just not consistent enough and a bit lose at times). I don't see the need to sign Pijnaker.

Yeah I’d much rather have Kalua, Billingsley or even Dingham over Fenton for next season. Kalua’s gotta be first pick with his ability to play anywhere on the back line.

I agree that Laws has been really good and that Surman has impressed hugely. Pijnaker’s just better than both of them and needs to get senior minutes under his belt - Ireland isn’t good enough for him to become the player he could be and Rio Ave don’t seem interested in developing him themselves. Whilst yes it’s unlikely to happen, if he’s available you’d be crazy not to at least enquire.

Plus, his passing ability could completely revolutionise how we play. Some of the balls and cross field passes he played in the OFC tourney were just incredible.

Laws and Surman are players that Talay has invested a lot of time in. And by and large they’ve repaid him that trust. Whether Pijnaker is better or not, it’s a position we have contracted players in.

It seems to me that that would be on Pijnaker or his reps to convince Uffie that he could really be a step above or offer something better, rather than being something the club needs to do because we’re short players in that position.

For Ole alumni it’s all about Europe (or USA). Nando P ain’t coming back to NZ. Doubt even Wilkins would be keen.

But there is enough other football talent coming out of NZ and it’s 5M. One reason Talay likes coaching the Nix, he has that cheapest talent pool mostly to himself

Someone like Alex Greive shows it’s there, if you look hard enough. This time last year Auckland was going into lockdown, so will easier to get domestic players to trial in 2022

Its not only Ole alumni thinking that tho. Would imagine any Kiwi lad who wants to play professionally his aim would be to play there.  Think its completely unrealistic for people to think young Kiwis would want to come back to play for the Phoenix.
However in saying that think Talays reputation could well get some to think about it.

Plenty do in order to get game time, look at McGarry, Lewis, Eliot, etc. From the current squad.

Some players, like Rojas, have decided it's better to be the big fish in a small pond.

probably a combination of all things:
1. end of contract, nix not really prepared to offer him anything worth staying for
2. injuries, his body probably aches all the time
3. at 29 he has time to make a go of his new found career with his brother as a barber.

good luck to him he has been a stalwart of the club! its just a shame we wont get to farewell him at the stadium.
