Guess we’ll find out more about the Bally (and OVH) situation in time. With Bally being used a lot less last year, it’s not all that unusual that Italiano might not require his services this year. OVH a bit less so, given his contributions.
However, he has been a player who has fallen between stools a bit in that he’s not been a clinical goal scorer or someone with exceptional pace or particularly quick feet. I had always thought he was strong on the ball, quick enough and had a good attacking pass.
But if the coach wasn’t happy with them and neither were getting game time, if we get some players the coach is happy with and the players can get something else elsewhere, than surely everyone is better off?
This is a problem because it underlines how thin our squad was, but if Marco and/Colakovski had stayed fit (let alone Rufs and Payney) we might not have noticed. We came out of the blocks fairly well, but unfortunately the flaws in the squad balance have been exposed.
And if Bergvall and Gray can beat Liverpool at Anfield then good enough is definitely old enough! I guess that’s the question. But even they’re not 40 game a season first team players yet.
And as someone above said, we’re not as big a club as Victory or perhaps even as Auckland, so we have to rely to a degree on word of mouth and reputation to get some deals over the line, so we need to take care of our reputation as a club too in our dealings. Don’t think we’ve booed the ref at full time that often?
We’ve exhausted our advantage over Auckland from having been in the A league already. First half of this season. Did we enjoy it? Time to be better overall.
