in the nix's defense, Sutton may get overseas offers as a free agent but there won't be any that would have been willing to pay a significant fee for him. He simply has not been consistent enough for that. Isn't a baby either at 23. The only player we have who might feasibly go for a decent fee in the foreseeable future is Hughes. If he has a decent year next year and the Nix have a good season I could easily see it happening. Maybe LBS too but that'd be a couple years away at least. AucklandPhoenix
The craziest thing is the one kiwi who could actually receive an offshore offer in the next year (Sutton) is out of contract this year.
So whoever is in charge of this stuff (Dome, I imagine) should explain why this has occured.
Sutton has carried us twice when we were sharke. He was having an incredible spell of form and then was seconded to CM by Talay, as was that Mexican lad.
And then this season with Payne out and no other play makers he was the only player carrying the ball forward.
If he’d had the support on his career path others have had we’d have sold him earlier. Similarly with Sail. He was an amazing keeper who was given the captaincy and that, along with his defensive partnership with Tim Payne, caused him problems where he hadn’t had any before.
A bit of a warning for us moving players around different positions when they haven’t finished learning one yet.
The interesting question for me is who would be better between him and McGarry. McGarry has had the benefit of at least one great coach at CCM who found a way to maximize his output, and has been away from the Nix twice. Sutton has stuck with the Nix. Maybe Sutton has a higher ceiling, but McGarry has had the better career experience so far surely.
