Huge loss okay in this context
26.04.2007
HAMISH BIDWELL

Boys against men, the premier division against the first. There was only ever going to be one winner.

But for the young lads of the Plus Rehab Napier Marist division one side, yesterday's 12-1 loss to their club's Bluewater Hotel-sponsored top team was anything but a disgrace.

"We're trying to get this youth team together and teach them how to play football and give them an opportunity to learn and that's what yesterday was all about," division one team manager Jim Cotterell said.

"We want them to try and play as much as possible, as opposed to just kicking it, in pressure situations.

The prems were always going to beat us and they created heaps of chances, which we defended well in some situations.

"I really thought our young players stood up and it was a credit to them, that they were only down 3-0 at halftime. We thought it probably could even have been 3-1, but Ryan Todd made a couple of good saves for the prems.

"We've got two 15-year-olds and three 16-year-olds and they don't care about the result. Sure, they want to win because they're not used to losing. These kids have won at every level they've played at, but they're only going to grow from playing matches like this.

"They're loving being a part of the club. A lot of these boys are training with the prems already and, hopefully, a couple will make it into that side next year and a couple more the year after.

"That's one of the beauties of Marist; the kids know they'll get a shot in the top team. That's something we really encourage and something that's not always the case at other clubs."

That was the sole round one fixture played yesterday, while there were a brace in round two. The most heartening one was that between the Cru Bar Maycenvale United premier side, against Port of Napier City Rovers division one.

Again, largely a youth team, Rovers acquitted themselves extremely well, going down by just a goal to nil. The other wonderful aspect was seeing three former All Whites on display: Marty Akers and Jonathan Taylor for Rovers and Paul Halford with Maycenvale.

The other match was played at Taradale Park, where the home side beat Eskview United

SOCCER: Rangers show their worth

23.04.2007

HAMISH BIDWELL

It's not being too disrespectful to Western Rangers, to say that they won't dazzle many opponents with the quality of their football.

But they've already shown during the first three weeks of the Homeworx Pacific Premiership that everyone will have to work hard to beat them. Their opening week 2-1 loss to Cru Bar Maycenvale United, was followed by a 1-0 win over Plus Rehab Port Hill United and then Saturday's nil-all draw with Havelock North Wanderers.

Not startling results, by any means, but ones that indicate that they will be tough to break down, says Western Rangers coach Scott Gibb.

"All in all, I think nil-all was a fair result," Gibb told Sport Today.

"Havelock created a few opportunities in the first half and then we turned the tables a bit in the second. There wasn't anything super about the game, but it was a pretty typical Western Rangers performance. Rangers have always been one of the harder teams to beat and that's one of the reasons we were a bit disappointed not to get a draw in that first game.

"I didn't think Maycenvale were leaps and bounds better than us. They just had a little more experience from top to bottom. They're obviously a team that will finish near the top, but I also rate Gisborne Thistle and, after beating them last week, Taradale are probably the dark horses.

"We've got Taradale this week and I think that will be a really good gauge of where we are. If there's one thing I've noticed about the league this year, it's that it's a lot more even and there's very little between most of the teams.

"If Maycenvale are going to go out and only beat teams by the odd goal, then it shows that things are pretty close." Gibb says he expects Rangers to at least be mid-table this season. But if they can score a few more goals, who knows?

"Our midfield is strong and our defence is strong, so we're not going to conceded a lot of goals. We do lack a goal scorer, though. Our results so far probably show that, but we've picked up four points from the nine that have been available in our first three games, so you have to be pretty satisfied with that," he said.

In the other matches, Taradale and Maycenvale kept up their 100 percent records. Taradale beat Port Hill 2-1, while Maycenvale had a 1-0 victory over Gisborne City. Bluewater Napier Marist beat HEP Napier City Rovers by the same margin and Gisborne Thistle thumped Eskview United 6-0.

SOCCER: Eskview show true grit

30.04.2007

HAMISH BIDWELL

Another week, another loss. Such is life for Eskview United at the moment.

But if their coach Nigel Edwards is sure of anything, it's that his side will prove themselves to be a credible force come the end of the Homeworx Pacific Premiership.

"It wasn't a bad game, but Havelock were probably a bit too good for us in the first half," Edwards said after Saturday's 4-0 loss to Havelock North Wanderers.

"We had a few chances, but just put them wide. Like I said, I thought Havelock played pretty well in that first half. At 3-0 down at halftime, we needed to come out stronger in the second half and we did that. We're having some good patches in games, but we're just lacking a bit of consistency at the moment."

Which is hard to disagree with, when you look at Eskview's for and against. Twenty-two goals conceded and just one for the good, doesn't make great reading.

"We are finding it difficult, but we'll get there," said Edwards.

"We're a team that won't give up. We'll keep working hard and we'll get some results by the end of the season. We've had a few ups and downs with guys, but we're starting to get everyone to training and looking to go ahead from there.

"This is a very good competition and, so far, the calibre of teams we've played has been excellent. This is a big step up for all the clubs, but having this competition will stand Hawke's Bay soccer in good stead in the future."

Going into Saturday's round, Eskview were one of three clubs yet to register a point. That's now two, after HBE Napier City Rovers snatched a 2-all draw against Gisborne Thistle at Bluewater Stadium.

That leaves Plus Rehab Port Hill United as the other point-less team, following their 2-0 loss to Gisborne City at the Childers Road Reserve.

"It was 1-0 at halftime and we put everything into getting an equaliser," said Port Hill coach Tim Claudatos.

"That left us a little bit exposed on defence and they got the second goal with about 15 minutes to go. It doesn't get any easier. We're back up to Gisborne next week to play Thistle and I hope we can improve."

In the other matches, our two unbeaten teams, Cru Bar Maycenvale United and Taradale, stretched their winning streaks to four games. Maycenvale beat Bluewater Napier Marist 2-1, while Taradale got home against Western Rangers by the same margin.

Well WFA has jumped on a forum that hasn't been touched for 8 years just to say NCR as a club aren't doing well as they've lost a few reserve players this season, not sure Ballerdave deserved his polite reminder as I think his description was quite accurate.

I never said the club was struggling, the first team is doing very well which is obviously positive and how they should be measured! I Just find it strange that the club have let this happen as they have effectively lost a whole reserve team from what I can tell due to the appointment of 1 coach, who by the way i don't know from a bar of soap. And now they are unable to field a team, to me something can't be right! Last years set up seemed fine.

I choose this forum as it was the relevant one or should I have started up a new one? and no I am not him.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/hawkes-bay-today/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503462&objectid=11446718        Football: Bloor hattrick pivotal

A Jared Bloor hattrick has kept Havelock North Wanderers' hopes alive in Chatham Cup knockout football.

The striker's 33rd, 77th and 90th-minute saw the Federation League campaigners conquer Seatoun in Wellington on Saturday.

Player/coach Bruce Barclay said the villagers struggled through the second half but highlighted it was a new experience for his men to venture south to the capital.

"Of the entire squad I was the only one who had played at Seatoun Park and that was many years ago," Barclay said after his Cole Murray-sponsored side had to come to grips with wind and a bumpy pitch. He put it down to education for his troops in coming out of their comfort zone to factor in the elements on a different route on State Highway 2.

The Wanderers thrashed Douglas Vila (Masterton) last year but got a taste of the same when they succumbed away to Central League side Palmerston North Marist.

"We're not in fear of Central League sides so we're happy with challenging ourselves."

They will give fellow undefeated Team Taranaki a "run for their money" in a Fed League match at Guthrie Park at 1pm this Saturday.

Alexander Electrical Napier Marist are still setting the pace in the Computer Care Pacific Premiership after beating Cr Bar Maycenvale United 2-0 at Park Island with both goals from Jake Murphy. Marist captain Tia Aaoke said it was a bad performance but they were happy to come away with maximum points.

"You have games like that where you struggle but we stepped up," Aaoke said of Marist who have forged ties with Scottish club Glasgow Celtics with the promise of a mutual exchange of coaches and age-group players later this year.

Undefeated second-placed Taradale AFC have a chance to catch up with them when they play third-placed Sunshine Brewery Team Gisborne at Childers Reserve this weekend.

"No one had beaten Gisborne in two years and it's the first time we beat them as a club," Aaoke said of their 4-2 win at Park Island on April 25.

Taradale pipped Appmed House Port Hill 2-1 on Saturday after they were 1-1 at halftime. Troy Penny-Cooke Morgan scored in the 11th before the visitors equalised in the 28th minute but Leon Birnie struck the winner in the 88th from point-blank range.

Port Hill coach Terry O'Neill said Dale dominated but his men came back into it despite missing strikers Patrick Pilz and Matt Single.

Promotem Napier City beat Hastings Old Boys 3-1 while Big Barrel Havelock North lost 7-1 away to Gisborne. Rovers player/coach Phil Dol said coach Grant Hastings had done a good job to lift Old Boys' standards.

To be fair, we did lose a few to Marist - they followed the new Marist coach there.   However, Phil Dol has done a great job after stepping in and with the cooperation of Bill Robertson, the reserve team is now a true reserve team with C/L players dropping down within the rules.

It WAS - but they (somewhat) fixed it.

Except for when they played Team Gisborne...without a keeper. 7-3.

Team included at least 6 players in the wider first-team squad - but DIDN'T include Fane Morgan, which could've seen it 7-5 or 6.

So basically if the first team's away on a Saturday, they win (very) narrowly, draw or lose.
If the first team's playing on a Sunday, they win by lots (unless they don't have a keeper because he's gone to watch the Super Rugby Final...)

NCR did put in an expression of interest when it was called for some time ago.

However, HBU has been told that they will get the National League licence for the next two years so there was no point in both applying, especially as NZF has made that arbitrary decision.

Personally, and this is not the NCR position, I am pretty disappointed with the way this whole thing has gone.   Originally, the National women's league and the youth league were both Federation based competitions with the idea being that the best players from each Federation would be put on the National stage.   For some reason these teams are being dumped on the National League "clubs" and it would seem to me that only the Federation backed "clubs" will be able to afford the new licences.

I am in the Bruce Holloway camp where one would have to ask why you would risk the future of your Club (proper club - not a Franchise "club") running three teams in National Leagues as well as futsal.   I really get the impression that NZF didn't know what to do, so have done nothing.

Will be interesting to see how the masters league goes. I think NCR could put in most of their prems side from last year. I know my club struggled a bit with the concept, with a few players wanting their sons to play in the same side as them. Hopefully it works out though, very good idea.

A few key players have shifted from Thistle to United as well which should make the derby quite heated, if it wasn’t going to be already. Thistle will still be strong, will have the better depth I think. I have a brother in each team. Which HB teams will be the strongest?

Last years winners Marist are the team to beat I would think. I don't think they will be quite as strong (they have lost a few players). I think it may be a very even league this year. NCR always tend to be strong, and hard to beat at home. Rangers can beat anyone on their day, and usually have a pretty consistent squad. Porthill might be a contender this year, they seem to have a good big squad. Eskview could be a hard team to beat, their starting 11 is very strong. I'm not sure about Taradale, they will need to improve a fair bit from last season to challenge this year. I'm also unsure about Maycenvale, back into the premier league this year. But they have managed to keep a side in the division below. Their div 1 side last year were competitive in the cups against premier league sides. So they could do well. Havelock struggled last year, mainly due to them having to feed their federation side. They will definitely upset the top teams this year (especially when their central league side is playing at home), but most likely they will come last in my opinion.

Predictions

League: Marist

Runner Up: NCR

Wooden Spoon: Havelock

Dark Horse: Eskview, Giz United

On central football website

As mentioned, Cru Bar Maycenvale United make a welcome return to Premiership football and host the other Poverty Bay team in Gisborne United. Maycenvale performed strongly in the HB Div 1, now Premiership Reserve League, in 2017 and were Knock Out cup finalists also. It’s great to see them back in the Premiership and they will no doubt face a fired up Gisborne United team who will want to get their campaign off to a good start at the Hastings Sports Park.

The other three fixtures are no less interesting with a couple of tasty clashes between two formidable teams in BM Accounting Port Hill United and Eskview United at Marewa Park, Taradale face Western Rangers at Taradale Park and reigning Premiership champions Alexander Electric Napier Marist will host Building King Havelock North Wanderers at Park Island. Jamie Dunning has had quite an overhaul of his Napier Marist team from last season losing a large chunk of his squad out of the area to university. He can still call on a number of younger talented players and will rely heavily on the experience of the likes of Jonty Underhill and Tai Barham.

All games kick off at 3 pm and it would be hard to pick a winner amongst any of these clashes.

Not sure if anyone else is particularly interested, but how are the HB teams/leagues shaping up?

9 Team Premier league this season, with Eskview dropping out.

Not too sure who i would pick as a favourite, but it would be hard to go past the two Gisborne sides, United and Thistle who came 1 and 2 last year.

Reserve league i cant see anyone beating NCR, from the sounds of it they could probably put this team into the federation league and be competitive.

Div 2 looks like it will be a battle between Rovers and Porthill

Div 3 returns this year, havent really spoken to anyone in that league so could be open to anyone.

Masters Divison looks like another battle between Western Rangers (last years champions) and Eskview (Runners Up).

Womens league looks like a similar battle to previous years, Porthill and Eskview Blues with Taradales second side pushing those two.

Taradale the only HB womens team in the fed league.

No cups this year so its all about the league. Looking forward to seeing footy on the pitches next weekend!!

Few Covid casualties in the lower grades. Napier south don't seem to have fielded any teams in either Div2-3 or Masters. is that the end of that club?

Masters may be a bit closer than last year, our Marist team has a few old campaigners dropping down.
