Hi there, not sure if there's a a thread for this somewhere else - love Niche Cache, articles are great, but in that new one on the Champions League, he's missed out Chris Killen playing for Celtic against Benfica in 2007.

Not putting the boot in, as I love his work - just saying, it's 3 not 2.

I enjoy their work too, especially their podcasts, their football knowledge is pretty damn good, especially at a local level...

This is useful information. It's an error that's been made in places bigger than The Niche Cache, as it's not something that's easy to check and Rufer and Hay have long been cited as 'the two,' so it's good to have learnt this before Ryan or Sarpreet went and made it four (not three).

He played 5 times in the group stages - 1 start (away at Benfica) and then on as sub 4 times, v Shakthar, Milan, and Benfica

What about Greg Draper at Wales club The New Saints? he's played 4 Champions League games and scored 1 goal.

The Niche Cache author said he was only writing about Kiwis who had played in the group stages onwards. Disregarded the mickey mouse stuff before.

Pretty harsh calling Champions League qualifying mickey mouse. What's A-league then?

On that front, Max Mata played in qualifying rounds of Champions League last season, against Celtic of all clubs.

I think at least once Draper's Welsh club has played the champions of Gibraltar (popn 32,000 so similar to Timaru), in UCL qualifying.

Unsure of the UEFA  league coefficient on the Rock, but I'd hope the A League is a significantly better standard.

Yeh he did say group stages onwards - if we're saying qualifying is included then I wouldn't be surprised in Raf and Noah would count during their spells in Finland

Pretty sure that Gibraltar champions beat Celtic in one game in the Champions League qualifying. Lincoln Red Imps I think? I'll look it up.

Here we go, just for the record:

2016–17 UEFA Champions League 1Q FC Flora Tallinn 2–0 1–2 3–2
2Q Celtic 1–0 0–3 1–3

Correction. Draper's New Saints beat mighty Lincoln Red Imps in UEL qualifying in 2018, after both teams had earlier been knocked out of UCL qualifying.

All roads lead to Parkhead. Maybe it's the SPL that is mickey & mouse.

Hah, luckily the Scottish mafia isn't as active on the forums as they used to be, otherwise you'd probably have been eaten alive by now (deep-fried, of course).

All said and done, Killen's five appearance in the Champions League is no small thing (4 more than Danny, to put it in perspective), so worthy of recognition (even if some were fairly limited sub appearances).

And looking back like this really further emphasises just how much Wynton achieved as a player!!  After UEFA Cup appearances at Zurich, he then played UEFA Cup, Cup Winners Cup and Champions League with Werder... if one of our current AWs managed the modern equivalent of that it'd be phenomenal!!

nahh - you'l find Mars bars aren't really that popular in Scotland, especially after they started sponsoring the English football team and changing their name to Believe every 4 years!

Deep Fried Mars Bars are really just a thing that tourists have, but hey we'll deep fry anything else, Pizza's, Kebabs, even salad!

I enjoy pissing off English football supporters by reminding them that a Kiwi has been (joint) top goal-scorer in the Champions League but that no English (or indeed British) player ever has.

(Rufer: 1993-94 joint top-scorer with Ronald Koeman, 8 goals)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UEFA_Champio...

Only three Englishmen were ever top goal-scorer in the pre-Champions League, European Cup days before the 1992-93 season.

Four Scotsmen were.
