A long shot, but does anybody have footage of this match? I remember it being broadcast live on TV3. Did anybody tape it?

One day when i was surfing the net i came across some highlights of the game - was on someones facebook or twitter - but can't for the life of me think of where but may have been Noel Barkley. Was at the game and quite dramatic but not as good as 4-4 in 1972 - that final went to a second reply and all 3 games live on TV and captured the imagination of a lot of NZers. Trivia question - player scored 4 goals in original final and didn't get a winners medal afterwards (answer Graham Dacombe)

It was Noel Barkley, he got someone to create a highlights package of the game - best way to get hold of him is have a look on facebook and message him that way

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies. I reached out to Noel a few months back and he told me the dvd with the footage had been destroyed. He gave me the contact details of the guy who helped him make it but unfortunately he did not have the footage anymore. Such a shame, that was an amazing game! Im trying to contact TV3 but its been a dead end in the past.

Given the problems at TV3 presently good luck ! Lots of good historical NZ football content has been recorded over or lost in the years. Remember that pre 1980 or thereabouts there was no rugby on TV and football was shown live a lot. Chatham Cup finals were live on TV from at least 1965 (can remember that one) and Venus Shield games were often live on good old WNTV1

Damn! Would've loved to have seen the old matches! The first live Chatham Cup Final I saw on tv was 1989. What was the Venus Shield?

Venus Shield is the trophy for the Wellington Division 1 - perhaps the oldest club trophy in NZ . Still exists but is competed for in the Capital Premier League ( now a lot of clubs second teams)Games used to feature Miramar , Diamonds, Seatoun, Waterside, Western Suburbs, Northern , Railways (Lower Hutt City) , Hungaria and others. This was in the days prior to Central League starting in 1968. In those days there also used to be a full radio commentary (Gordon Whyte and Trevor Rigby) of the 12.40 pm game on the Basin Reserve no 2 and then a recorded 2nd half commentary of the 2.30 pm main game - this used to play after the main rugby game at Athletic Park . Very different days

The Venus Shield is old - it was donated in 1896 (the Wellington league had been running since 1891)by the Cameron brothers of the New Venus & Queens Tobacco company

It's not the oldest though that goes to Auckland's Thompson Shield which was first presented in 1892 and is awarded these days to the winners of Northern League Division 1

Do you know if the Brown Shield is still around somewhere?

Think these days its called the toilet seat. Joke. Was a provincial comp. Lost relevance when clubs became all powerful.

I remember the Winfield Challenge Shield in the early 90's, it was a provincial Ranfurly Shield type competition. It didn't last long, about 5 years I think.

The Challenge shield I think was pretty shortlived - sort of poor mans Ranfurly Shield

From memory there was also the  Winfield Inter Provincial trophy  around the era of the "not so Superclub" when the NZFA decided that 30 average to poor teams was better than 14 good to average teams . Was played at the end of the season and no one took it seriously. Seem to recall final series was televised

But is the literal shield anywhere?

Not sure - I think it is, but no one plays for it, your best bet to find where its is would be to get in touch with either Barry Smith or Jeremy Ruane

not quite, the Superclub replaced the National League. In 1990/91 the attendances in the National league were terrible, Miramar were getting 38 people!

Something had to be done unfortunately the super club wasn't the answer, but saying that no one cared about it is bollocks. I was living in Wanganui at the time and Wanganui Athletic set the place alight. crowds grew and Wembley Park was a great place to watch football. Problem cane when they qualified for the national round and hit up the Wanganui FA for more than 50% of the gate - the Wanganui FA didn't go for it so Athletic moved to Cooks Gardens and while they got 90% of the gate, the move to a large field worked in their oppositions favour - North Shore hit 6 past them as they used the wide open areas of the ground, something they would never have been able to do at Wembley Park

Still it was an awesome time to be in Wanganui (and that's not something you can say much!)  even if I did play for City!

That Athletic team were pretty awesome. From memory Andy Rennie, Kevin le Page and the Wye brothers amongst others over from Woking Town.

Unfortunately were basically one season wonders .Probably took advantadge of some ex National League teams struggling to adjust to the lower standard in the first season of "superclub". Wembley Park was a cool little ground.

That shield is super impressive if you ever get a chance to see it up close.
