Always interesting to see a 'Kiwi' in the UCL. Would be 2nd Nix alumni after Singh.

Just an update on this - CAS rejected Trabzonspor's appeal, so Besiktas will enter the Champions League qualifying rounds in the non-champions pathway.

Beşiktaş have drawn Greek side PAOK, in UCL 2nd qualifying round.

Looks a single leg only knock out fixture, hosted by PAOK, next week 25th August.

Loser to enter the 2020–21 UEFA Europa League third qualifying round (Main Path).

Subbed at HT (only sub made) with Beşiktaş 3-1 down against Greek side PAOK, in UCL 2nd qualifying round knockout tie.

Same score still at 70 mins, so Beşiktaş look like going out early and into the Europa League third qualifying round (Main Path).

Game before a qualifier against PAOK he was subbed off at HT. I imagine Turkish football supporters to be a pretty volatile lot. As a player you would need a thick skin. One minute the rooster, next just a feather duster.

But yeah hopefully that mooted Euro AWs v Euro USA happens. That would be interesting.

Boyd has a legal contract for another few years. They can only get rid of him by finding another club who will buy him....and most Western Europe clubs have closed their transfer window or they could pay him out of his contract. Which would be very expensive.

I think this is more about clubs feeling the economic strain due to Covid. Clubs all over Europe are really hurting. No crowd revenue, no season ticket sales, no hospitality revenue, huge drop off in merchandise sales and lower sponsorship. It’s the perfect storm. Add to problem is that broadcasters are in trouble as well and in some countries are wanting to renegotiate the broadcasting arrangements. Boyd is an expensive import so it’s not surprising they may want him out.

Sivasspor, finish the season 5th in Turkey, 1 spot outside Euro spots. Boyd played 14 games, with 5 goals.

Dramatic finish to the Turkish season with Boyd's parent club Beşiktaş (84 pts & +45 GD) pipping Galatasaray (84 pts & +44 GD) for the title by a season GD of 1 goal!!

Beşiktaş so nearly slipped up at season end, losing 2 of their last 3 games.
Fenerbahçe
(3rd, 82 pts) only just behind the big 2.

Since Boyd was on loan from Beşiktaş and played 4 games with one goal, at the start of the season for the league winners, I guess he gets a winner's medal. His loan deal is due to finish July this year.

Who knows what next for Boyd. Pretty disrupted season for him (mix of injury & moving between clubs) with only 18 games in total, from a possible 40. From memory, was rumours of a move to the MLS last year??

Not included in a mostly Euro based 27 man US national team squad to play in Switzerland this FIFA window. Includes a few MLS players so obviously travel between the US & Europe is currently possible.

Following game in Gallen, US travel to Denver for Concacaf Nations League semi against Honduras. Mexico and Costa Rica will square off in the other semi, with the winners competing for the inaugural Concacaf Nations League title.

Following Honduras, the US have a friendly against Costa Rica in Salt Lake City, June 9th.

For what it's worth in these Covid muddled availability times, Boyd last played for the US in November 2019. USMNT have played 7 games since then. Make that 10 by early June.

Trouble for Boyd is that he seems to be unwanted at Besiktas, and, given they just won the league, he might struggle to get back in. Champions League should have easier foreign player rules than the Turkish league, but doubt they’d keep him if he’s unregistered for the league.

On the US national team front, he might struggle to make that team also. All the big hitters in the US squad in his position (Pulisic, Reyna, Weah, Aaronson and Musah) are younger and at better clubs (Chelsea, Dortmund, Lille, RB Salzburg and Valencia). He’s ‘94 born, and those guys are ‘98-‘02 born, so there’s quite an age gap for those players to develop further away from him. He looks to have become a fringe international, and I reckon he’s unlikely to make a 2022 World Cup squad, should they manage to qualify this time.

If the All Whites qualified, I wonder if he’d regret changing, because all he really has are a couple Nations’ League bench appearances, and a Gold Cup where he played against Guyana and Trinidad in the group stage, before not playing the semifinal or the final in which they lost to Mexico. Is that really any better than playing against the Solomon Islands or PNG?

Have to admit, I do feel some schadenfreude when he doesn’t make their squads though, and I can’t imagine I’m the only one.

If he stays on the outer re USNMT selection, and AWs get to Qatar, or even when those big intercontinental playoff games roll around next June - he's bound to feel some regret. Every football player wants to go to a World Cup.

But he made a decision that he felt was the best for him at the time. He's made his bed.

On the bright side, if he stays with Sivasspor, he'll get to play in the inaugural season of the Europa Conference League. So there's that...

Re USMNT selection or lack thereof, coochiee is 100% correct - he made his choice, and he gets to live with that decision.

His choice. I mean the All Whites haven’t played so. And I’d rather he was out of the tent than being a disruptive influence.
I think I was annoyed when he left the Phoenix, but he’s had a reasonable club career compared to a few. I don’t think we’re desperate for him to be in the AWs and he doesn’t want to so fairs fair. Play Just or McCowwatt or some other talent with Singh and Wood.

The interesting question for me is would we want him back at the Nix? Don’t think he should yet, or that he wants to, but I guess your  vote would be no? Would he be better than Robbie Kruse?

I’d definitely take him back at the Phoenix, and I reckon he’d be one of the best players in the league, he’s become a lot more refined and battled to make his spot in decent European leagues. Kruse is broken and has always been injury prone, I reckon Boyd would do better. Trouble is, I don’t think Boyd would want to come back to the A League at all, let alone at this stage of his career

Why would he ever come back to the A League, let alone the Nix?

He's put together a very good club career to date, especially considering he left the Nix as a young fringe player. Sure very disappointing he's turned down the AWs (who he would still walk into), but have to give him credit as to where he's got to now on the books of Beşiktaş - Turkish champions. Nothing has been easy for him.

If ever Europe doesn't work out for Boyd, MLS would be his obvious destination. Compared to A League - higher quality, greater profile, bigger wages, and keeps him at least on radar of US selection.

Amongst all the Intercontinental Playoff/OFC tourney draw dramas, it's been overlooked Boyd could still come against his old AW team June 13th-14th next year.

Slim chance you'd think yes at the moment, with him seemingly well out of the USNMT picture. Club & national career having gone downhill somewhat.

Unused sub overnight as Rizespor lose 0-1 in Turkish Cup to 3rd tier side Ankaraspor. Rizespor will be busy focused on trying to avoid relegation. Bottom of Süper Lig 14 games, into the 38 game season. Boyd 11 games with 9 starts, no goals.

Low point being sent off 12 mins in, against Champness's Giresunspor (and likely relegation rivals) back in mid Oct. Joey C scoring his first late act Giresunspor goal in that one.

This is Boyd's 4th Süper Lig club in Turkey, and to be fair at two of those Ankaragücü (6 SL goals, now down in the Turkish 2nd tier) & Sivasspor (5 SL Goals, loaned there from Besiktas) he's done well and been a key player. Hence why Besiktas signed him. And from memory was then, with his club career doing well, he switched national camps.
https://us.soccerway.com/players/tyler-boyd/215116/

Though their switches away from NZ were both hugely disappointing, like Stensness don't really wish him any ill wind. If they don't feel 'Kiwi' enough it's hard to change that feeling. Plus when Boyd switched the AWs weren't even playing, let alone tracking along nicely like they are now.

But looks likely the 26 yr old may one day regret his decision to switch nationalities. There are alot of other ex Ole boys now in the AWs setup, incl longtime mate Thomas. There would certainly be an irony if they were at Qatar, having beaten that CONCACAF playoff team and he wasn't.

Credit where it is due, he's gone to Portugal initially and since carved out a good career already, by Kiwi standards pretty much on his own. Seems focused & determined, so he might get back to Besiktas level you never know. But at 26, time not on his side.
