Its obvious how depressed this loss has made us as a country. Apparently many people have been jumping off the sky tower since.

Edit: on second thought, they may have been bungy jumping...

Just re-read this whole thread, absolutely brilliant from start to finish. Although it reminded me of the time i chucked a grand on Argentina beating the AB's, not the smartest move.

I was hopeful that the government would stop throwing money at this now. But with Joyce disagreeing it seems we'll again be paying for rich people's restaurant bills.

The fact it may be in the tax haven of Bermuda may lead this government to throw more money at it. Our interesting trust and taxation laws essentially makes us the best and most stable tax haven in the south pacific and there will be some interested clients for the government lurking around there.

If this is such a prestigious event that the government would like you to believe after throwing millions of our tax money at it, then why are there only three teams who bothered to enter? Even the Aussies who are the closest country to us and have even won it before couldn't be bothered. The three confirmed entries were all pre-Covid as well. From what I've read on social media, there is stuff all coverage of it in England even though their team is now doing pretty good. Even the A-League gets better coverage over there. Why doesn't Jacinda chuck a few million $$ at the Nix :)

There will be very little that the government gets out of it this time,  Covid defiantly hasn't helped, but seeing the money costs it really does make you wonder if it the best use for the countries money.  Do love to watch it however

I don’t mind the America’s cup in its hay day, in fact I liked it

but this so far has frankly sucked the kumara

An uppity grant dalton taking money of the tax payer and some interesting money deals

Only three challengers.

One stuffed up Prada cup due to the American crash, with only half the races raced.

Even if we win the thing again I don’t think it’s worth keeping again

no not at all, I just think if we win the thing it’s simply not worth the investment that the government and by that, I mean us as tax payers invest into it.

In other words a hand out.

I have never thought that before this regatta but it has really been a lemon ?,

This cup has clearly demonstrated that it is a rich boys toys club and has reached a point technology wise that any new entrant and country (I.e. Australia, Japan), simply would be to far behind the 8 ball by competing

So if we do win it, I couldn’t see more then 3 maximum challengers next time. That simply ain’t worth the public investment and all the ra ra

Career limiting move. I just had a full on argument with my boss about how overrated this competition is. I compared it by saying that after the Olympics, the football world cup is the next biggest sporting competition in the world and that it would be like just having Brazil, Argentina, Germany and France competing.
It was a lot better in the Sir Michael Faye days when there were about a dozen boats in the challenger series.

Oh well hopefully by Monday, the Italians have been defeated and all is forgiven.

But if the unthinkable happens and the Auld Mug leaves these shores, in a bid to retain employment maybe try paraphrasing Bob Hawke, after Oz became the first country to successfully challenge for the Cup.

Wow i really think Team NZ have screwed themselves here..... The fact that they turned it down after all the support they were given to win it back is a joke.  I don't think a single person in nz could say with s straight face that they ever deserve money again.   hope they go abroad and lose it before folding....

So Dalton and his fellow rich listers played a game, Get as much free money out of the tax payers of New Zealand. The government said only $100 Million and they said "we'll go offshore". Nice money if you can get it. I hope the Government don't kowtow to their not veiled threat. Let them fudge off to some foreign country and let the Taxpayers of New Zealand not fund one dollar towards it.

But rich boys with rich toys. Dalton and co can piss off, they've had a pretty good gravy train over the years and let's be honest, other than a few bars and cafes and restaurant's around the viaduct basin, just what has it brought to the rest of New Zealand? Did the South Isand make any money from it? Did anyone outside of Auckland make anything from it? Daltgon has certainly made some decent coin. I don't think he'll need to rock up to WINZ and ask for help.

Well technically Dalton said thanks for the offer but we need more than $100m to fund a decent campaign, Emirates as a sponsor lost a truck tonne of money due to Covid, not sure about the rest of the sponsors. Govt negotiated along with Auckland council and offered $100m with some cheap rent agreements etc. By all reports the negotiations went well and were in good faith but the numbers werent viable.
I'm disappointed it wont be held in Auckland but will still follow it where ever the event ends up.

Yep, there's commercial realities unfortunately. You've got to be able to fund a proper campaign. I remember reading something about Ineos offering to host it at the Isle of Wight and pay for it and also for it to return to NZ afterwards no matter who won, if that deal was real then that would seem like a good stopgap.

assuming Team NZ won. The brits would have had a massive advantage with course knowledge making it less that a 50/50 chance of winning.

Well, NZ would host the next one regardless of who won.

maybe, but I doubt the Brits would have wanted to "host" the next one in NZ if they'd won.
Will be interesting to see how it all pans out. Seems like the Italians are not happy about it not being held in NZ.
